© 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company. Syntheses of three new chlorin e6 conjugates for PDT of tumors are reported. One of the new compounds 17 is conjugated with lysine at the 131-position, but the others are mono-conjugated 14 or diconjugated 15 with the non-amino acid species ethanolamine. Cellular experiments with the three new compounds and previously synthesized non-amino acid 152-conjugates (7-10), 131-monoconjugates 14, 16, and a 131,152-diconjugate 12 are reported. In vitro cytotoxicity experiments show that the 131-conjugates are more toxic than the 152-conjugates, and the most toxic derivative (dark- and photo-toxicity) is the 131-ethylenediamine conjugate 11. The most useful …

The Characteristics Of Interpersonal Networks In Disaster Response*, Christopher Kenny, Christopher Weber, Kathleen Bratton

It is well established that discussion networks have meaningful consequences for a variety of sociopolitical attitudes and behavior. In this project, we explore how social structure shapes reactions to disaster; in particular, the 2010 BP oil spill. We address the questions of how networks are relied upon following community-wide disaster, and to what extent these networks mirror social structures in other domains. To examine these questions, we analyze data that experimentally vary the commonly employed discussion “name-generator” questions to see if oil spill discussants are fundamentally different from important matters discussants. Relative to “important matters” discussants, we find strong support …

Message from President: Followers of the headlines relish big events, whether mammoth economic downturns or raging battles or colossal storms. Leaders, especially those of the academic kind, most often deal with small events, whether the rotation of Chairs in a tiny department or the bursting of a water main on a satellite campus or declining enrollments in an unfashionable curriculum. Those seeking the reasons for the troubles faced by Louisiana higher education institutions might be well-advised to narrow their inquiries: to consider the role of the incremental in building or dissolving the grand—in, as it were, gradually pushing up or …

Redox-Sensitive Marr Homologue Bifr From Burkholderia Thailandensis Regulates Biofilm Formation, Ashish Gupta, Stanley M. Fuentes, Anne Grove

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Biofilm formation by pathogenic Burkholderia species is a serious complication as it renders the bacteria resistant to antibiotics and host defenses. Using B. thailandensis, we report here a novel redox-sensitive member of the multiple antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR) protein family, BifR, which represses biofilm formation. BifR is encoded as part of the emrB-bifR operon; emrB-bifR is divergent to ecsC, which encodes a putative LasA protease. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, LasA has been implicated in virulence by contributing to cleavage of elastase. BifR repressed the expression of ecsC and emrB-bifR, and expression was further repressed under oxidizing …

Newly designed fluorine-doped magnetic carbon (F-MC) was synthesized in situ though a facile one-step pyrolysis-carbonization method. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) served as the precursor for both carbon and fluorine. 2.5% F content with core-shell structure was obtained over F-MC, which was used as a adsorbent for the Cr(VI) removal. To our best knowledge, this is the first time to report that the fluorine doped material was applied for the Cr(VI) removal, demonstrating very high removal capacity (1423.4 mg g−1), higher than most reported adsorbents. The unexpected performance of F-MC can be attributed to the configuration of F dopants on the surface. …

This study focuses on librarian-led classes within an introductory seminar course for first-year undergraduates and whether the length of information literacy sessions affects student learning. The authors question how much library interaction is actually beneficial for students? At what point do the returns plateau? With limited resources, what is the most efficient means of reaching students in-person?
Bloch Waves In Crystals And Periodic High Contrast Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator
Bloch Waves In Crystals And Periodic High Contrast Media, Robert Lipton, Robert Viator
Faculty Publications
Analytic representation formulas and power series are developed describing the band structure inside periodic photonic and acoustic crystals made from high contrast inclusions. Central to this approach is the identification and utilization of a resonance spectrum for quasi-periodic source free modes. These modes are used to represent solution operators associated with electromagnetic and acoustic waves inside periodic high contrast media. Convergent power series for the Bloch wave spectrum is recovered from the representation formulas. Explicit conditions on the contrast are found that provide lower bounds on the convergence radius. These conditions are sufficient for the separation of spectral branches of …

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Fast, selective, and noninvasive reporting of intracellular cancer-associated events and species will lead to a better understanding of tumorigenesis at the molecular level and development of precision medicine approaches in oncology. Overexpressed reductase presence in solid tumor cells is key to cancer progression and protection of those diseased cells from the oxidative effects of therapeutics meant to kill them. Human NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase isozyme I (hNQO1), a cytoprotective 2-electron-specific reductase found at unusually high activity levels in cancer cells of multiple origins, has attracted significant attention due to its major role in metastatic pathways and its …

We present a combined fit of a simple astrophysical model of UHECR sources to both the energy spectrum and mass composition data measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory. The fit has been performed for energies above 5 ċ 1018 eV, i.e. the region of the all-particle spectrum above the so-called "ankle" feature. The astrophysical model we adopted consists of identical sources uniformly distributed in a comoving volume, where nuclei are accelerated through a rigidity-dependent mechanism. The fit results suggest sources characterized by relatively low maximum injection energies, hard spectra and heavy chemical composition. We also show that uncertainties about physical …

Dielectric Properties Of Biomass/Biochar Mixtures At Microwave Frequencies, Candice Ellison, Murat Sean Mckeown, Samir Trabelsi, Dorin Boldor
Faculty Publications
Material dielectric properties are important for understanding their response to microwaves. Carbonaceous materials are considered good microwave absorbers and can be mixed with dry biomasses, which are otherwise low-loss materials, to improve the heating efficiency of biomass feedstocks. In this study, dielectric properties of pulverized biomass and biochar mixtures are presented from 0.5 GHz to 20 GHz at room temperature. An open-ended coaxial-line dielectric probe and vector network analyzer were used to measure dielectric constant and dielectric loss factor. Results show a quadratic increase of dielectric constant and dielectric loss with increasing biochar content. In measurements on biochar, a strong …

© 2017, American Society of Plant Biologists. All rights reserved. Photorespiration is an energy-intensive process that recycles 2-phosphoglycolate, a toxic product of the Rubisco oxygenation reaction. The photorespiratory pathway is highly compartmentalized, involving the chloroplast, peroxisome, cytosol, and mitochondria. Though the soluble enzymes involved in photorespiration are well characterized, very few membrane transporters involved in photorespiration have been identified to date. In this work, Arabidopsis thaliana plants containing a T-DNA disruption of the bile acid sodium symporter BASS6 show decreased photosynthesis and slower growth under ambient, but not elevated CO2. Exogenous expression of BASS6 complemented this photorespiration mutant phenotype. In …

© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Scope: Enhancing the formation and function of brown adipose tissue (BAT) increases thermogenesis and hence reduces obesity. Thus, we investigate the effects of resveratrol (Resv) on brown adipocyte formation and function in mouse interscapular BAT (iBAT). Methods and results: CD1 mice and stromal vascular cells (SVCs) isolated from iBAT were treated with Resv. Expression of brown adipogenic and thermogenic markers, and involvement of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)α1 were assessed. In vivo, Resv-enhanced expression of brown adipogenic markers, PR domain-containing 16 (PRDM16) and thermogenic genes, uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and cytochrome C …

A search for ultra-high energy photons with energies above 1 EeV is performed using nine years of data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory in hybrid operation mode. An unprecedented separation power between photon and hadron primaries is achieved by combining measurements of the longitudinal air-shower development with the particle content at ground measured by the fluorescence and surface detectors, respectively. Only three photon candidates at energies 1 - 2 EeV are found, which is compatible with the expected hadroninduced background. Upper limits on the integral flux of ultra-high energy photons of 0.027, 0.009, 0.008, 0.008 and 0.007 km-2 sr-1 …

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, anti-Muslim discourse and sentiment has become pervasive in the West. Using a collaborative ethnographic approach, we observe how participants at a Turkish Community Center (TCC) cultivate stigma management strategies against the cultural backdrop of post-9/11 anti-Muslim stereotypes. In our analysis, we use Goffman's work on stigma and critical race theory to explore the socially embedded nature of stigmatization processes for Turkish Muslims in a local community center. Our findings reveal how aspects of Turkish culture and Islam, together with a structural context …
