A Quantitative Evaluation Of Landsat For Monitoring Suspended Sediments In A Fluvial Channel., Soon Tae Kim Jan 1980

A Quantitative Evaluation Of Landsat For Monitoring Suspended Sediments In A Fluvial Channel., Soon Tae Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since the launch of Landsat-1 July, 1972, the orbital remote sensing system has made significant contribution to earth science research. Landsat's repetitive "earth observations" are of great value for monitoring changes in earth surface conditions through time. Investigation of suspended sediment concentrations in natural water bodies is one of the major areas of Landsat applications. An attempt has been made to evaluate the utility of Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) digital data for monitoring suspended sediment concentrations in a natural river channel using Tarbert Landing, Mississippi on the lower Mississippi River as the test site. Specific purposes of the study were: …

A Study Of Reading Achievement In Terms Of Various Background Factors., Dorothy Ellis Carlson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study was designed to evaluate reading achievement in terms of treatment, (direct concept teaching) and non-treatment, controlling for socioeconomic group, preschool attendance and the level of maternal education. The study population was composed of 117 children in six kindergarten classes in six schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Two schools were chosen at each socioeconomic level to allow for a treatment school and a control school. One class was used at each school. Schools representing the low, middle and high levels were determined by the percentage of children receiving free lunch at the school. Schools classified as high …

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco Jan 1980

The Dimensions Of Social Behavior Of Monkey Infants., Steven Mark Buco

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the underlying dimensions of social behavior of infant monkeys. Three species of mother-infant dyad-reared monkeys were studied: crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis), rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), and patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas). In addition, the behavior of crab-eating macaques reared in mother-sibling-infant triads and in nuclear family triads was investigated. Independent maximum likelihood factor analyses of the mother-oriented and peer-oriented behavior of each of the five groups yielded seven factors, five of which were grossly similar across groups: social play, maternal comfort and care, affiliation, mother-oriented social play, and social exploration. The remaining two factors were not consistent …

The Solution To Single Kink Solitary Wave Transport For Systems Described By A Generalized Frenkel-Kontorova Equation., Louis William Adams Jr Jan 1980

The Solution To Single Kink Solitary Wave Transport For Systems Described By A Generalized Frenkel-Kontorova Equation., Louis William Adams Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A numerical procedure to solve the differential equation for solitary waves via iteration for a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model is presented. The generalization consists of adding a constant force proportional to particle velocity. The equation of motion is cast into integral form using a Green's function. The introductory chapter briefly reviews recent progress in nonlinear dynamics using the sine-Gordon equation as an example. Emphasis is placed on the concept of "non-linear modes" and its relevance in theoretical descriptions of transport processes. After a second chapter defining the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova equation, its dimensionless reparametrization and an outline of the iteration scheme, the …

A Comprehensive Study Of Black Students Attending An Historically Black University: Selected Characteristics, Experiences, Level Of Satisfaction, And Similarity To Other College Populations., Charles Ruffin Burchell Jan 1980

A Comprehensive Study Of Black Students Attending An Historically Black University: Selected Characteristics, Experiences, Level Of Satisfaction, And Similarity To Other College Populations., Charles Ruffin Burchell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although a large body of literature exists on the characteristics and experiences of black students attending predominantly white colleges and universities, very little empirical research on blacks attending predominantly black colleges and universities is available. Existing studies usually lack comparative groups of black and white students who attend predominantly white colleges and universities, hence it is difficult to determine the unique characteristics of the blacks who attend black colleges. To remedy this situation the present study surveyed a representative group of black students attending a publicly-supported black university. The purpose of the study was to determine unique or attractive features …

Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller Jan 1980

Studies On The Physiology Of A Cellulolytic Strain Of Aspergillus Terreus Under Conditions Of Batch And Continuous Cultivation., Thomas Ferrell Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. Upon proportionate increase of the medium composition, there was no decrease in growth rates or in biomass yields …

Cross-Validation Of The Adolescent Behavioral Classification Project Instrument: A Factor Analytic Study., Katherine M. Krefft

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Adolescent Behavioral Classification Project is one aspect of the larger Behavioral Classification Project, a long-term project designed to develop a behaviorally-based taxonomy of emotional disorders. The Adolescent Behavioral Classification Project (ABCP) instrument is a comprehensive list of 518 behavioral items and 3 demographic variables that cover the range of emotional problems of youth 13 to 18 years of age. This research concerns the cross-validation of the ABCP instrument on a sample of clinic and nonclinic youngsters. Results from a total of 810 questionnaires, 300 from subjects seen in clinics and 510 from nonclinic subjects, were submitted to a principal …

In this paper we explore a research problem of Greene: to find inequalities for the Möbius function which become equalities in the presence of modularity. We replace these inequalities with identities and give combinatorial interpretations for the difference. © 1980.

The Conversion Of Manganese (Ii) Oxide To Manganese (Ii) Sulfide: Effect Of Variable Solid Properties. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Anthony Caillet Jan 1980

The Conversion Of Manganese (Ii) Oxide To Manganese (Ii) Sulfide: Effect Of Variable Solid Properties. (Volumes I And Ii)., David Anthony Caillet

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of the effect of variable solid properties on the kinetics of the reaction of spherical manganous oxide pellets with hydrogen sulfide gas was performed. This study resulted in a major modification of the grain model to allow for radial solid property variations due to reaction and/or sintering. It was shown that this new model did the original constant property grain model. A complete experimental study was made of the effects of exposure to high temperatures (sintering) and the effects of the reaction itself on the structural properties, notably the specific surface area and porosity, of the solid reactant …
