Emergent Storylines That Influence Positions And Mathematical Status In Collaborative Small-Group Proof Activity, Brittney M. Ellis, Tenchita Alzaga Elizondo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we used positioning theory to examine storylines that emerged in students’ discourse as they collaborated on a proof construction task. We purposefully selected a case of group work from an inquiry-oriented introduction to proof course as prior analyses showed it was highly collaborative (Alzaga Elizondo, 2022), yet power dynamics seemed unbalanced. We hypothesized that positioning theory could provide a useful lens to interrogate such power dynamics. Through this analysis, we identified several implicit storylines that influenced the interaction related to the nature of proofs, the nature of mathematics, writing proofs, the role of an external authority, …

Investigating Racial Bias And Attribution Error In Grading Student Performance, Tony Reibel, Rachel Roegman Apr 2026

Investigating Racial Bias And Attribution Error In Grading Student Performance, Tony Reibel, Rachel Roegman

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Standards-based grading (SBG) is a relatively recent alternative model of grading designed to increase the reliability of grading while reducing the influence of teacher biases that can distort student evaluations. This study investigated whether SBG mitigates race‑related bias and attribution errors through a mixed‑methods 3×2 factorial vignette experiment with in‑service teachers. A total of 219 teachers scored the same student essay using a common SBG rubric and provided a 1-4 proficiency score, a binary evaluation concerning success criteria and written feedback. “Learning profiles”– a description of the student’s current and past abilities – varied by tone (positive, negative, none: name-only) …

Effect Of Different Pellet Binders On Palm Kernel On Growth Performance And Nutrient Digestibility In Broiler Chicken, Nuun Marfuah, Burhanudin Sundu, Rusdi Rusdi, Sugiarto Sugiarto

Jurnal Ilmu Ternak Universitas Padjadjaran

Feed plays a paramount role in supporting growth, metabolism, and production performance. Their high price encourages the utilization of inexpensive and alternative feed ingredients. PKM, one such feed ingredient, is produced by palm oil industries. However, there is still a very limited application because of its high crude fiber content, which needs processing technologies like pelletization with binder addition. Based on this background, this experiment has been conducted to study the effect of various types of natural and commercial binders in 15% PKM-based pellets on performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers. The study was done for five weeks using 150 …

Evaluating The Impact Of K135t Mutation On Malate Dehydrogenase Kinetic Activity, Emily Frost, Kaitlyn Mello Apr 2026

Evaluating The Impact Of K135t Mutation On Malate Dehydrogenase Kinetic Activity, Emily Frost, Kaitlyn Mello

Undergraduate Research Symposium (2026- )

Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) is a key protein in the citric acid cycle; its dysregulation can have catastrophic impacts, such as neurological and metabolic disorders, and various cancers. MDH catalyzes the reversible oxidation-reduction reaction between malate and oxaloacetate, also reducing NAD+ to NADH in the process. The citric acid cycle is one of the central metabolic pathways, connecting to other essential pathways, such as amino acid and fatty acid biosynthesis, highlighting the importance of understanding how MDH works. A key site in MDH is the flexible loop region (amino acids 119-137), responsible for substrate binding, catalysis, and orientation. The flexibility of …

Czts Nanoparticles As Cost Efficient Catalysts For Producing Green Hydrogen, Aidan Hau Apr 2026

Czts Nanoparticles As Cost Efficient Catalysts For Producing Green Hydrogen, Aidan Hau

Undergraduate Research Symposium (2026- )

Hydrogen gas is produced to be used as feedstock, fertilizer, and fuel. Traditional hydrogen production produces “gray hydrogen” in a process that uses and releases fossil fuels into the atmosphere. One way to produce “green” hydrogen is with renewable energy technologies that produce hydrogen gas using electrolysis without emitting fossil fuels. In electrolysis, the hydrogen atoms bonded to oxygen in a water molecule are split to produce hydrogen. A typical catalyst for this process would be a precious metal like palladium, which can be costly. In order to make green hydrogen production more affordable, an alternative catalyst composed of CZTS …

Characterizing The Macroinvertebrate Community In Crissy Lake, An Impounded Reach Of The Pomme De Terre River, Prior To Channel Modification, Max Lundgren

Undergraduate Research Symposium (2026- )

The aging Crissy Lake Dam, on the Pomme de Terre River in Morris, has altered natural stream flow and impeded upstream passage of several fish species since 1939. In late 2026 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will replace the dam with stone arch rapids and facilitate river channel formation upstream of the dam. In order to evaluate the river modification project, we characterized the macroinvertebrate community in Crissy Lake, the impoundment upstream of the dam before implementation of channel modification. In September 2025 we collected benthic macroinvertebrates from two sets of Ekman grab samples. We found 12 taxa (average …

Proline To Serine Mutation In Flexible Loop Region Of Malate Dehydrogenase, Anna Molstad, Hannah Robertson Apr 2026

Proline To Serine Mutation In Flexible Loop Region Of Malate Dehydrogenase, Anna Molstad, Hannah Robertson

Undergraduate Research Symposium (2026- )

Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) is an essential enzyme that converts malate to oxaloacetate using the reduction of NAD+ to NADH. In humans, MDH plays a role in energy metabolism by catalyzing a key step of the citric acid cycle, important for energy production. Other indirect roles for MDH include gluconeogenesis and reoxidizing NADH from fatty-acid β-oxidation. An important feature of MDH is a flexible loop region that can alter substrate binding and enzyme activity, but its role is not well understood. Our study investigated how Pro123 to Ser (P123S) mutation in the flexible loop region affects MDH function. We hypothesized that …

Journal of Sustainable Mining

In any rock engineering or excavation project, optimizing blast design is essential for controlling post-blast phenomena such as flyrock, burden throw, and burden rock velocity (BRV). This study investigates the dynamic response of BRV in bench blasting operations by employing a high-speed camera and ProAnalyst software to quantify rock displacement. The relationships between BRV and key blast parameters, number of holes (NH), explosive charge per hole (EPH), total explosive charge (TEC), stiffness ratio (K), and stemming ratio (STR), were analyzed to identify linear or non-linear trends. Non-linear trends, …

A Study Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Use Among Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Students, Gustavo Reinoso, Rachel Allen-Mchugh, Thomas Decker, Yolanda Griffiths, Stacey Huffman-Main, Leslie Jackson, Ashley Murray, Jamie Rognes, Christine Urish

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into higher education, yet little research explores its use among entry-level occupational therapy doctoral (OTD) students. This study developed a scale to assess AI usage and perceptions, examining differences across academic years. Eighty OTD students from a mid-sized urban university completed a 44-item survey refined using a Delphi method with nine faculty experts. Exploratory factor analysis identified three subscales—Efficiency and Adaptability, Academic Integrity Concerns, and the Student-Professor Divide—accounting for 46.04% of the variance (Cronbach’s α = .72–.93). Multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant effects of academic year on subscale scores (Wilks’ Λ = .822, …

Modeling Flood-Induced Cascading Disruptions In The Indian Electronics Supply Chain Using Influence Network Analysis, Surendra Orupalli, Hiroki Sayama Apr 2026

Modeling Flood-Induced Cascading Disruptions In The Indian Electronics Supply Chain Using Influence Network Analysis, Surendra Orupalli, Hiroki Sayama

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

This study investigates flood induced disruptions in the Indian electronics supply chain using influence network analysis. Monsoon floods are recurring hazards that significantly impact economic activities, logistics, and industrial productivity. This study integrates district-level rainfall data (2020 to 2025) with supply chain network models to quantify cascading failures. The methodology applies rainfall thresholds (≥ 300 mm/month) to identify flood-prone districts and constructs a stochastic influence matrix representing inter-firm dependencies. Flood propagation dynamics are modeled iteratively with a propagation coefficient (α = 0.6) and convergence threshold (ε = 10⁻⁴). The resulting disruption profiles are mapped onto company-level revenues calibrated to India-specific …

Voxel Ai Architecture Based On 12-Vector Highly Isotropic Phase Matrix (Logos/Moution), Olexandr Lozovyi

Defensive Publications Series

Modern artificial intelligence architectures based on floating-point matrix multiplications face rapid growth in energy consumption with scaling and the von Neumann bottleneck. This paper presents a non-classical computing model, Voxel Oscillator Computing (VOC AI), based on a 12-vector highly isotropic (within discrete lattice constraints) phase matrix (LOGOS/MOUTION), extending the established S-HVE (Harmonic Vector Equilibrium) and Resonant AI frameworks. The architecture uses a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice with 12 balanced connections, where information is encoded as a phase (16-bit integer) without explicit amplitude weights. In 2D planar projections, this natively resolves into a 6-connected hexagonal lattice. The MOUTION algorithm implements discrete …

Pax: When Apathy Invades Prospectus, Process, And Reflection, Ashlyn Johnson Apr 2026

Pax: When Apathy Invades Prospectus, Process, And Reflection, Ashlyn Johnson

Honors

PAX began as a comic drawn in a notebook in 2020 and has developed into the outline of a full animated series. Inspired by the actions of selfish or misinformed citizens refusing to wear masks or quarantine themselves during the height of the coronavirus (COVID 19) pandemic, PAX began as a comic about a girl surviving in a post-apocalyptic wasteland: a reality where nobody reacted to the many warning signs of the impending alien invasion. This reflected my perception at the time that nobody was taking COVID seriously. Recently, PAX has taken on a slightly more hopeful tone, where the …

Unlocking Inexpensive Training Through Overcoming Weaknesses In Dataset Distillation, Connor Wilhelm Apr 2026

Unlocking Inexpensive Training Through Overcoming Weaknesses In Dataset Distillation, Connor Wilhelm

Theses and Dissertations

Dataset distillation is a nascent technique that promises accelerated neural network training. In particular, distillation produces a highly compressed dataset that can train a neural network in as little as a single optimization step. However, distillation has not been adopted for real-world use cases due to weaknesses, such as poor approximation of the original task, unclear interpretability, high costs of the initial distillation, and poorly elaborated use cases. Here, we present five papers that advance task distillation towards real-world adoption. The papers focus on: distilling reinforcement learning environments, interpreting distillation-produced datasets, improving distillation performance using ensembling, examining distillation's generalization to …

Physics-Based And Data-Driven Low-Order Modeling Of Centrifugal Compressors, Chase Oliphant Apr 2026

Physics-Based And Data-Driven Low-Order Modeling Of Centrifugal Compressors, Chase Oliphant

Theses and Dissertations

Centrifugal compressors serve as critical components across many applications, yet their design and performance prediction present significant challenges. While computational fluid dynamics provides high-fidelity predictions of compressor behavior, its prohibitive computational cost renders it impractical for preliminary design phases where rapid exploration of the geometric and operating space is essential. Conversely, existing low-order models have enabled efficient performance estimation but suffer from limited accuracy and poor interpretability, particularly when applied to novel geometries or off-design operating conditions. This dissertation addresses these limitations through three complementary contributions that bridge the gap between high-fidelity CFD and preliminary design tools. The first contribution …

Umm (Ultimate Memory Manager): A Note–Taking App Built From Scratch, Caleb M. Early

ASPIRE 2026

For my honors project, I’m building UMM, an advanced note-taking application built entirely from scratch. I’m someone who takes many notes and primarily uses OneNote and Notion, but over time have found myself wanting something faster and more flexible than any note-taking application I could find. UMM is my attempt to create the note-taking app I wish I had, as well as learn how to create such a program.

Instead of relying on pre-made code, I built my own systems for how documents are structured, edited, saved, as well as how the cursor moves, text is formatted, and how selections …

Addictive By Design: Can States Regulate Social Media Algorithms In The Face Of Free Speech Challenges?, Niamh Kathleen Keane

University of Miami Business Law Review

The foe we did not know, the stranger that stole the show. Social media once presented itself as a friendly way to connect with loved ones through shared pictures and catchy captions. Yet, it has since shown its true colors; intentionally addicting its users—for its own financial benefit—and showing no remorse doing so.

Entranced, users set off on a digital journey, veering down paths they never imagined . . . Today, children as young as eight years old are exposed to extremely harmful content such as medically unsupported dieting techniques, substance abuse, and dangerous, life-threatening social media “trends,” all of …
