A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker
A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Evaluating programs is a necessary and vital function in the management of all organizations. In 1988, the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) began an intensive statewide process entitled "Issues Programming". This is a qualitative evaluation of that process. The study focused on the perceptions of extension agents and community leaders who participated in the process. Four focus group interviews were conducted, two each for agents and leaders. Geographic site selection provided for participant inclusion from all LCES administrative areas. The groups were asked a series of open ended questions designed to draw from them in-depth perceptions about the process in …
Tournaments And Ideal Class Groups., Robert John Kingan
Tournaments And Ideal Class Groups., Robert John Kingan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In a series of papers published in the 1930's, L. Redei and H. Reichardt established a method for determining the 4-rank of the narrow ideal class group of a quadratic number field, essentially by finding the rank over ${\bf F}\sb2$ of a $\{0,1\}$-matrix determined by applying the Kronecker symbol to the prime divisors of the field discriminant. When this field is of the form ${\bf Q}(m\sp{1\over2}),$ with $m={\pm}p\sb1{\cdots}p\sb{n},$ each $p\sb{i}\equiv3$ (mod 4) prime, this matrix takes a form similar to that of the adjacency matrix for a tournament graph. Also, in this case we can find the 4-rank of the …
Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim
Fatigue Effects On Manual Lifting Acceleration., Youngjoun Kim
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this research was to study the effects of fatigue on lifting acceleration and posture caused by repetitive manual lifting. Electromyogram, oxygen consumption and heart rate were used as indices of a subject's physiological fatigue. Data were collected for a period of two hours of continuous lifting, at a rate of 4 lifts per minute using the free-style posture. A box of fixed dimensions (30cm x 30cm x 20cm) and fixed weight (15.9 Kg) was used as load. It was found that the average load acceleration increased with work duration. Peak acceleration was found to be maximum in …

The primary focus of this investigation was to examine differences in depression, general psychopathology, and social skills among adolescents, and to identify the role of adaptive behavior between intelligence (I.Q.) and depression. One hundred adolescents, 13 through 17 years of age participated in this study. I.Q.s ranged between 40 to 130. Five levels of I.Q.s were studied (Above normal, Average, Borderline, Mild, Moderate). Three depression measures, the Child Depression Inventory (CDI), Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS), Bellevue Index of Depression (BID), one social skills measure Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY), and one general psychopathology measure Psychopathology Instrument …
Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr
Failure Predictions In Repairable Multi-Component Systems., Woodrow Thomas Roberts Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The subject of this research is the prediction of failures in repairable multi-component systems from statistical models that utilize the historical failure data for the systems. Failures occurring in repairable systems are examples of a series of discrete events which occur randomly in a continuum. Such stochastic point processes are analyzed using the statistics of event series. The Crow nonhomogenous Poisson process, NHPP, model is recognized by the reliability community as being one of the best models for repairable systems. The objective of this research is to show that the Crow NHPP model, with its overall failure predictions for a …
Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy
Nonlinear Inelastic Finite Element Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Emphasis On Shear And Torsion. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ananth Ramaswamy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study a post-cracking formulation for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures has been proposed. The secant stiffness formulation considers the following nonlinearities: effects of tension-stiffening in concrete along the reinforcing direction(s), aggregate interlock model with variable shear based on crack confining stresses, and reduction of concrete compressive strength and stiffness after cracking as a function of stresses or strains. The cracking model is capable of simulating the effects of multiple non-orthogonal cracks at a point. This total stiffness formulation treats concrete unloading and reloading along a secant path and is capable of simulating the post-peak strain softening response. …

Banach Space Valued Stochastic Differential Equations., Fariborz Asadian
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Let $W(t,\omega)$ be a Brownian motion on an abstract Wiener space (i,H,B) corresponding to the canonical normal distribution on H. The well known theorem of Girsanov is proved for such a process with the perturbing term taking values in the Hilbert space H. Consider the stochastic integral equation $\xi(t) = x+\int\sbsp{0}{t}A(s,\xi(s))dW(s)+\int\sbsp{0}{t}\sigma(s,\xi(s))ds$ where x is in $B,\ A(\cdot,\cdot)$ and $\sigma(\cdot,\cdot)$ are bounded continuous functions from $\lbrack 0,\infty)\times B$ to $I+L\sb2(H)$ and H respectively. Here $L\sb2(H)$ denotes the collection of Hilbert Schmidt operators on H. Furthermore, suppose for every $s\ge 0$ the restriction of $A(s,\cdot)$ to H is invertible and $A(s,\cdot)$ and …
Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
Partisan Representational Form And Partisan Bias In United States State Lower-House Legislative Elections: A District-Level Approach., Kenneth Alan Wink
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
I explore the relationship between partisan votes and partisan seat allocation in U.S. state lower-house elections. Specifically, I measure the representational form (the rate of partisan seat changes given particular partisan vote changes) and partisan bias (asymmetry in the seats-votes relationship) of 441 lower-house state legislative elections in 46 states from 1968 to 1987. I then test a number of hypotheses that have been advanced to explain variation in representational form and partisan bias. Values for representational form and partisan bias are generated by creating simulations from actual election results. I simulate seat gains made by Republicans given one percent …

The Use Of Goal Setting And Contingency Contracting For Improving Children's Homework Performance., Deborah Lynn Miller
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Research suggests that homework has favorable effects on learning and student achievement. However, research directed at improving homework completion and accuracy has been limited in scope. The present study examined the effects of goal setting and contingency contracting on children's homework performance. Subjects were four parent-child dyads in which the child exhibited clinically significant homework problems. Dependent variables of primary interest included direct observation of children's on-task behavior, work accuracy, and Homework Problem Checklist scores (Anesko, Schoiock, Ramirez, & Levine, 1987). Using a combination of multiple baseline and withdrawal (ABAB) designs, goal setting and contingency contracting produced significant improvements in …

This study investigated the effects of the child's specific ADHD symptoms, aggressive symptoms, and the parents' and child's locus of control orientation on parental stress. The frequently overlooked heterogeneous nature of the ADHD population was addressed, by assessing specific ADHD symptoms and the presence of aggressive symptomatology. Sixty boys, ages 6 to 12 years, diagnosed (using DSM-III-R criteria) as having ADHD by a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, and their parents participated in the study. Parents were asked to sign a consent form and complete measures of parental locus of control and parenting stress. A children's locus of control …
The Interference Of Non-Meaningful Learning On Subsequent Meaningful Learning., Dolores Pesek Simoneaux
The Interference Of Non-Meaningful Learning On Subsequent Meaningful Learning., Dolores Pesek Simoneaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to develop a framework for the notions of meaningful and non-meaningful and to test for learning interference from a non-meaningful then meaningful instructional sequence. A review of the literature reveals that terminologies differ widely, but similarities in notions emerge. The terms meaningful and non-meaningful are employed here to indicate, respectively, richness in relationships, or a relative absence of relationships both within the knowledge structure, and in relation to previous knowledge. Based on a Piagetian framework of learning involving assimilation/accommodation and consequently disequilibrium, I hypothesize that non-meaningful learning tends to establish constructs that interfere with …
Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee
Fourier Transform And Heat Equation In White Noise Analysis., Jung-Soon Kim Lee
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this dissertation, we study the Fourier transform and heat equation in the white noise set-up. It is known that the Fourier transform ${\cal F}$ can be defined on the space (${\cal S}$)* of generalized white noise functionals. We prove that ${\cal F}$ is the adjoint of a certain linear operator on the space (${\cal S}$) of test functionals. On the other hand, it is known that if f is a bounded Lip-1 function on an abstract Wiener space with Gaussian measures $P\sb{t},$ then $u(t)=P\sb{t}f$ solves the heat equation ${d\over dt}u(t)={1\over2}\Delta\sb{G}u(t)$ with initial condition u(0) = f where $\Delta\sb{G}$ is …

Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue
Assimilation Of Organic Contaminants In Wetlands: Processes And A Conceptual Model., John Howard Pardue
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory studies and field measurements were conducted to quantify assimilative capacity of toxic organic contaminants in freshwater wetlands. Studies were conducted for hexachlorobenzene and naphthalene in a mineral-dominated bottomland hardwood forest and an organic matter-dominated freshwater marsh. In laboratory studies, sorption of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in wetland soil and floodwater was strongly influenced by high levels of naturally occurring dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Organic matter-dominated wetlands (e.g., marshes) demonstrated no advantage over mineral-dominated wetlands (e.g., bottomland hardwood forests) for sorption of HCB due to partitioning in this DOC phase. Over the short-term, sorption of HCB was adequately described using a three-phase …
Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu
Monte Carlo Studies Of The Critical Phenomena In Carbon Monoxide Oxidation., Bing Yu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It is well established that anisotropy does not affect the critical behavior of a system in thermodynamic equilibrium undergoing a second order phase transition. We study here an anisotropic kinetic model for heterogeneous catalysis which mimics the oxidation of CO on the (110) surface of a transition metal like Pd. In this model, the oxidation process occurs at an infinite reaction rate. We mapped out the phase diagram of possible steady states for various anisotropic reaction and absorption processes as a function of the O$\sb2$/CO adsorption rate and the CO diffusion rate. The phase diagram depends upon the amount of …

Conjoint analysis is a recent evolution in mathematical psychology that has been employed extensively in the marketing environment. The technique is concerned with measuring the joint effect of two or more independent variables on the ordering of a dependent variable. Conjoint analysis relates an individual's preferences to a set of prespecified attributes. The objective of conjoint analysis is to decomposed a set of responses to factorially designed stimuli in which the utility of each stimuli attribute can be inferred from the respondents' evaluations of the stimuli. In addition, conjoint analysis and its economic foundations are developed in the context of …
Development Of Various Quantitative And Analytical Methods For The Analysis Of The Dynamics Of Fish Populations: An Application To The Spotted Seatrout Population In Coastal Louisiana., Thomas Earl Helser
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Presented in this dissertation are analytical and quantitative methods developed for an experimental gillnet sampling program for the analysis of the dynamics of fish populations, illustrated here on Louisiana's spotted seatrout population. Chapter 1 presents a new method of estimating gillnet selectivity using a system of simultaneous equations and a non-linear iterative maximum likelihood approach. The model solution is a set of parameter estimates which mathematically describe the response surface of capture probabilities for fish of size-class j in mesh size i. As an extension to the nonlinear maximum likelihood gillnet selectivity model, Chapter 2 presents a second approach using …

Development Of A Technique To Determine The Temperature Dependence Of The Refractive Index Of Carbonaceous Particulates., Barry James Stagg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The complex refractive index of carbonaceous particulates is an important quantity in many areas of combustion research and practical applications. This property characterizes the radiative transport in luminous flames and plays a key role in the interpretation of conventional light scattering measurements. The purpose of the present study is to develop a technique which will allow the experimental determination of the temperature dependence of the refractive indices of carbonaceous materials and provide a predictive model for the variation of the indices. A high temperature ellipsometer system is developed that allows measurements of the intensity of polarized light reflected from the …

Jeremy Rifkin Challenges Recombinant Dna Research: A Rhetoric Of Heresy., Wiley Michael Futrell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Western culture, in large part, is a product of scientific inquiry, technological development and the ability to harness some of nature's resources. Much of society looks to science for technology-related solutions to many of its ills. As it develops new technology, science necessarily seeks to understand and control the forces of nature. Although science assumes a prominent role in contemporary society, that prominence does not necessarily translate into cultural consensus on the progress achieved by technological developments. Another perspective is represented by those who contend that continued technological advancement is the source of existing problems, not the solution. As these …

This dissertation contains three parts based on my research project which investigates three aspects of rabbit muscle phosphofructokinase (ATP: D-fructose-6-phosphate-1-phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.1.11; PFK). The first part reports the isolation and characterization of two full-length rabbit muscle PFK cDNAs. The DNA sequences of these two cDNAs (cDNA-A and cDNA-B) show an identical coding sequence but heterogeneous 5$\sp\prime$untranslated regions. cDNA-A is formed by removal of a 1.7 Kb upstream intron while cDNA-B retains the 3$\sp\prime$region of this intron. The second part describes the expression of the cDNA in several bacterial hosts. Recombinant rabbit muscle PFK has been expressed at a significant level …
Modeling Of Circulation And Transport In Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana And Its Implications For Oyster Harvesting Management., Ellen J. Prager
Modeling Of Circulation And Transport In Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana And Its Implications For Oyster Harvesting Management., Ellen J. Prager
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Contamination of oyster-rich waters in south Louisiana by sewage-related wastes is believed to occur on a seasonally varying basis, and pose a serious threat to both human welfare and the local economy. Fluctuations in the meteorologic and oceanographic conditions in the region are believed to be responsible for the variability observed in bacterial concentrations. To gain a better understanding of the relationship between transport processes, environmental forcing, and the potential for contamination, a combined program of in situ measurements and numerical modeling techniques was conducted in the nearshore waters of Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana. A finite element model based on the …
