Impact Of Bryozoans On The Psii Efficiency Of Sargassum, Maxwell Ronan Stanfield Apr 2026

Impact Of Bryozoans On The Psii Efficiency Of Sargassum, Maxwell Ronan Stanfield

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Student Publications

Sargassum species such as s. fluitans and s. natans support epiphytic organisms on its surface, such as diatoms, hydrozoans, and encrusting bryozoans. Evidence previous studies suggests that marine epiphytic organisms have a negative effect on the photosynthetic pathways of the algae they live on (Khan, Du, Khan, Che, and Khurshid 2021; Cancino, Mufioz, Mufioz, and Orellana 1987). Interestingly, some evidence shows that even when epiphytic encrusting bryozoans limit the light reaching red algae, the algae was able to produce more photosynthetic pigments to compensate for the lowered light intensity (Muñoz, Cancino, and Molina 1991). No data is currently available on …

Gamma Ray Burst Afterglow Slopes, Brian Robbins Apr 2026

Gamma Ray Burst Afterglow Slopes, Brian Robbins

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Student Publications

The standard models for gamma ray bursts (GRBs) typically assume that shockaccelerated electrons follow a power law distribution of energies. However, this behavior is not what some gamma ray bursts show. In this project, it is suggested that the presence of thermal electrons causes temporal and spectral structure across the afterglow, which is significantly different from models assuming a pure power-law distribution of electrons. To model the afterglows, we decide on a large number of samples of GRBs from the Swift database and obtain the temporal and spectral indices at arbitrary times. By finding the temporal and spectral indices at …

Automatic Determination Of Mechanical Properties From Molecular Dynamic Stress-Strain Curves Using Regression Fringe Response, Josh Kemppainen, Tristan Muzzy, Travis Wavrunek, Gregory Odegard Apr 2026

Automatic Determination Of Mechanical Properties From Molecular Dynamic Stress-Strain Curves Using Regression Fringe Response, Josh Kemppainen, Tristan Muzzy, Travis Wavrunek, Gregory Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have become a powerful tool for studying polymers, designing new materials, and composites. Mechanical behavior in MD simulations are typically evaluated through stress-strain curves. However, MD-generated stress-strain curves are often obscured by thermal noise from atomic vibrations. This noise complicates the reliable derivation of mechanical properties and hinders objective and reproducible analysis. The noise in the stress-strain curves has been removed by using a Butterworth low-pass filter, enabling clearer interpretation of stress-strain data. Building on this, a novel analysis framework the Regression Fringe Response (RFR) is introduced to systematically determine the Young's modulus, yield strength, and …

Background

Acoustic disturbance is increasingly recognized as an ecological concern, particularly at sea. In light of marine mammal stranding events associated with use of naval mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), which often involve goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris), research has sought to detect and characterize Ziphius behavioral responses to MFAS.

Methods

We deployed Sound and Motion Recording and Telemetry (SMRT) tags on 13 Ziphius in the Southern California Bight. The study area includes the United States Navy’s Southern California Anti-submarine Warfare Range (SOAR), and deployments overlapped temporally with training exercises including MFAS use. We used hierarchical hidden Markov models (HHMMs), which provided …

Photochemical Activation Of Cyanine-Based Nanogels For Controlled Drug Delivery, Presley Clary Apr 2026

Photochemical Activation Of Cyanine-Based Nanogels For Controlled Drug Delivery, Presley Clary

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Student Publications

Cyanines are highly conjugated molecules with useful properties, such as ease of aggregation and fluorescence. In this project, they were incorporated into an acrylamide-based nanogel made through organic synthesis to exploit these properties for controlled drug delivery. Exposing the nanogel to nearinfrared (NIR) light causes it to react with reactive oxygen species (ROS), forming an unstable intermediate. The intermediate splits into two fragments, releasing the nanogel's cargo.1 The cargo, temozolomide, is an alkylating agent which can be used to disrupt the DNA of cancer cells.

Advancing Neutrosophic Topology Through Gamma Generalized Alpha Closed Sets, B. Kalaiselvi, K. Sivakumar, S. Chandrasekar, P. Kalarani, A. Kesavan Apr 2026

Advancing Neutrosophic Topology Through Gamma Generalized Alpha Closed Sets, B. Kalaiselvi, K. Sivakumar, S. Chandrasekar, P. Kalarani, A. Kesavan

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This paper introduces a new class of Neutrosophic closed sets, termed Neutrosophic γ-generalized α-closed sets (Ne.(γGα)CS), together with their corresponding open sets (Ne.(γGα)OS), within the framework of Neutrosophic Topological Spaces (NTS). The study is motivated by limitations in existing classes of Neutrosophic closed sets, including α-closed, semi-closed, and γ-closed sets, which often lack sufficient flexibility for modeling hybrid structures characterized by partial membership, indeterminacy, and uncertainty. To overcome these limitations, the proposed Ne.(γGα)CS are defined using β-closure operators and α-open supersets, providing a more comprehensive framework that extends and unifies several previously established concepts. The properties of these sets are …

Advancing Common Fixed Point Theorems In Bipolar Fuzzy-2 Metric Space And Applications In Nonlinear Analysis, Rajesh Kumar Saini, Mukesh Kushwaha Apr 2026

Advancing Common Fixed Point Theorems In Bipolar Fuzzy-2 Metric Space And Applications In Nonlinear Analysis, Rajesh Kumar Saini, Mukesh Kushwaha

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study advances common fixed point theorems (CFPT) in bipolar fuzzy-2 metric space (BF2MS) and explores their applications in nonlinear analysis. BF2MS generalizes traditional metric and fuzzy metric spaces (FMS) by incorporating dualistic relationships, allowing the representation of both attraction and repulsion effects. We extend classical fixed point theorems (FPTs) to BF2MS, establishing conditions for the existence of common fixed points (CFPs). The study's applications span nonlinear analysis, stability analysis, control theory, and multi-criteria decision-making under uncertainty. Our findings refine existing results and provide practical real-world applications, supported by numerical examples, enhancing fuzzy mathematics and nonlinear systems modeling.

Complex Neutrosophic Aczel-Alsina Aggregation-Based Hybrid Decision Framework For Machine Learning Encryption In Banking, Muhammad Kamran, Muhammad Shazib Hameed, Muhammad Tahir, Said Broumi, Nurullayev Mirolim Nosirovich Apr 2026

Complex Neutrosophic Aczel-Alsina Aggregation-Based Hybrid Decision Framework For Machine Learning Encryption In Banking, Muhammad Kamran, Muhammad Shazib Hameed, Muhammad Tahir, Said Broumi, Nurullayev Mirolim Nosirovich

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Advanced uncertainty modeling tools have emerged due to the growing complexity of real-world decision environments. Complex Single-Valued Neutrosophic Sets (CSV-NSs) use special functions to represent truth, uncertainty, and falsehood, making it easier to show unclear, conflicting, and vague information. CSV NSs, which consider both size and direction of uncertainty, let one more precisely combine and make decisions by using complex numbers. This work presents robust approaches for combining information, which rely on the Aczel-Alsina (A-A) operator and power-weighted strategies specifically designed for CSV-NS. These are included in a used to design hybrid decision-making framework and in the context of a …

Electron Emission From Unactivated Gaas: Towards The Development Of Novel Sources Of Spin-Polarized Electrons, William Truslow Newman Apr 2026

Electron Emission From Unactivated Gaas: Towards The Development Of Novel Sources Of Spin-Polarized Electrons, William Truslow Newman

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Spin-polarized electrons are commonly emitted from GaAs photocathodes with treated surfaces in a process called negative electron affinity activation. These sources require stringent vacuum conditions that are often hard to achieve and lead to significant downtimes in experiments. In this dissertation, I present new investigations of electron emission from unactivated GaAs towards the development of novel sources of spin-polarized electrons. The work entails two primary directions. The first is the investigation of electron emission using multiphoton ionization processes enhanced by nanoscale surface structures. We explore GaAs electron sources including, shards, nanotip arrays of pyramid structures, wedges, and ion-milled tips. The …

Worldview-Bench: A Benchmark For Evaluating Global Cultural Perspectives In Large Language Models, Abdullah Mushtaq, Imran Taj, Rafay Naeem, Ibrahim Ghaznavi, Junaid Qadir

All Works

Background: Large Language Models (LLMs) are predominantly trained and aligned in ways that reinforce Westerncentric epistemologies and socio-cultural norms, leading to cultural homogenization and limiting their ability to reflect global civilizational plurality. Existing benchmarking frameworks fail to adequately capture this bias, as they rely on rigid, closed-form assessments that overlook the complexity of cultural inclusivity. Objectives: To address this cultural bias problem, we introduce WorldView-Bench, a benchmark designed to evaluate Global Cultural Inclusivity (GCI) in LLMs by analyzing their ability to accommodate diverse worldviews. Methods: Our approach is grounded in the Multiplex Worldview proposed by Senturk et al., which distinguishes …

Repurposing An Old Pc Into A Self-Hosted Cloud And Media Server, Riley Biggins Apr 2026

Repurposing An Old Pc Into A Self-Hosted Cloud And Media Server, Riley Biggins

Honors Theses

Commercial cloud platforms rely heavily on subscription models, so everyday users fall into a "cloud trap" summarized by perpetual fees, forfeited privacy, and a lack of true asset ownership. At the same time, functioning consumer electronics get discarded as e-waste when they fail to meet the hardware requirements of modern operating systems. This project presents a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to both issues by repurposing a 2017 HP Pavilion laptop into a personal cloud and media server.

Despite severe hardware constraints, my software architecture rivals the utility of paid services. By replacing Windows with a headless installation of Ubuntu Server, …

Price Dispersion In Online Markets Increases During Periods Of Higher Demand As Firms Use Dynamic Pricing Strategies To Maximize Revenue Under Demand Uncertainty., Brooke Stewart Apr 2026

Price Dispersion In Online Markets Increases During Periods Of Higher Demand As Firms Use Dynamic Pricing Strategies To Maximize Revenue Under Demand Uncertainty., Brooke Stewart

Honors Theses

This study investigates the phenomenon of price dispersion in online retail markets during high-demand periods, focusing on the role of dynamic pricing under conditions of demand uncertainty. Although online markets operate in a transparent way, and consumers find it cheap to search them, the price dispersion phenomenon, when the same product is sold at varying prices by various vendors, persists. The study discusses the case of higher dispersion of prices in high-demand times like holidays, sales events, or shortages of goods when there is uncertainty about the future demand, causing dynamic pricing models. In analyzing the price of 25 the …

Neutrosophic Hyper Ku-Ideals, Ramesh D. Kumar, M. Vasu

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This paper introduces the concepts of neutrosophic hyper KU-ideals, including strong, weak, and strong-weak neutrosophic hyper KU-ideals, as well as reflexive neutrosophic hyper KU-ideals within the framework of hyper KU-algebras. Fundamental properties of these structures and the relationships among them are investigated in detail. Special attention is given to the study of neutrosophic weak hyper KU-ideals and the conditions under which a neutrosophic set qualifies as a neutrosophic strong hyper KU-ideal (NSHKUI) or a reflexive neutrosophic hyper KU-ideal. The paper further establishes necessary conditions for a neutrosophic weak hyper KU-ideal (NWHKUI) to become a neutrosophic strong-weak hyper KU-ideal (NsWHKUI), as …

Strategic Substrate Modification As A Mechanistic Probe In Photoredox Catalysis: An Nmr And Quantum Yield Study, Michael J. Payne Apr 2026

Strategic Substrate Modification As A Mechanistic Probe In Photoredox Catalysis: An Nmr And Quantum Yield Study, Michael J. Payne

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The mechanism of the photoredox-catalyzed allylic arylation of cyclohexene with 1,4- dicyanobenzene (DCB) using tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) and a thiol hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) co-catalyst has been the subject of ongoing mechanistic debate. Three competing pathways have been proposed: radical-radical coupling, radical addition, and fragment-radical-radical coupling. In this work, methyl-substituted cyclohexene derivatives are employed as mechanistic probes to interrogate product distributions and reaction efficiency using ¹H and 2D NMR spectroscopy and external quantum yield measurements. Quantum yields across all substrates remained below one, confirming significant loss to unproductive pathways and ruling out a chain mechanism. Among the derivatives, 1-methylcyclohexene was found to …
