Characterization Of Probability Measures Through The Canonically Associated Interacting Fock Spaces, Luigi Accardi, Hui Hsiung Kuo, Aurel Stan
Faculty Publications
We continue our program of coding the whole information of a probability measure into a set of commutation relations canonically associated to it by presenting some characterization theorems for the symmetry and factorizability of a probability measure on ℝd in terms of the canonically associated interacting creation, annihilation and number operators.
On Shioda-Inose Structures Of One-Parameter Families Of K3 Surfaces, Ling Long
On Shioda-Inose Structures Of One-Parameter Families Of K3 Surfaces, Ling Long
Faculty Publications
We develop an algorithm to determine a one-parameter family of elliptic curves associated to a one-parameter family of K3 surfaces with generic Picard number 19 by a Shioda-Inose structure. The family of elliptic curves is determined up to an isomorphism and an isogeny. An application to a generalized congruence number problem is also discussed. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Supersymmetry In Quantum Mechanics: An Extended View, A. R.P. Rau
Supersymmetry In Quantum Mechanics: An Extended View, A. R.P. Rau
Faculty Publications
The concept of supersymmetry in a quantum-mechanical system is extended, permitting the recognition of more supersymmetric systems, including very familiar ones such as the free particle. Its spectrum is shown to be supersymmetric upon taking into account physical reasonableness of the wavefunctions involved. Spacetime symmetries are used for the construction of the supercharges without explicit invocation of fermionic or Grassmann variables. Most notably, while the free particle in one dimension has generally been regarded as having a doubly degenerate continuum throughout, the construction clarifies that there is a single zero-energy state at the base of the spectrum.

Physical Significance Of Q Deformation And Many-Body Interactions In Nuclei, K. D. Sviratcheva, C. Bahri, A. I. Georgieva, J. P. Draayer

The pairing correlations in nuclie with mass 40 ≤ A ≤ 100 were studied. The study was carried out by using the concept of quantum deformation. It was observed that the q ≠ 1 was uniformly superior to those of the nondeformed limit and that the q parameter varies smoothly with nuclear characteristics. It was found that the q deformation plays a significant role in understanding higher-order effects in the many body interaction.

Quantum Interferometric Sensors, Leo D. Didomenico, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling
Quantum Interferometric Sensors, Leo D. Didomenico, Hwang Lee, Pieter Kok, Jonathan P. Dowling
Faculty Publications
Quantum entanglement has the potential to revolutionize the entire field of interferometric sensing by providing many orders of magnitude improvement in interferometer sensitivity. The quantum entangled particle interferometer approach is very general and applies to many types of interferometers. In particular, without nonlocal entanglement, a generic classical interferometer has a statistical-sampling shot-noise limited sensitivity that scales like 1/√N, where N is the number of particles passing through the interferometer per unit time. However, if carefully prepared quantum correlations are engineered between the particles, then the interferometer sensitivity improves by a factor of √N to scale like 1/N, which is the …
Interaction Of Ising-Bloch Fronts With Dirichlet Boundaries, A. Yadav, D. A. Browne
Interaction Of Ising-Bloch Fronts With Dirichlet Boundaries, A. Yadav, D. A. Browne
Faculty Publications
The Ising-Bloch bifurcation in two systems, the complex Ginzburg Landau equation (CGLE) and a FitzHugh Nagumo (FN) model was studied in the presence of spatial inhomogeneity. The Ginzburg Landau equation was a parametrically forced complexes and described nematic liquid crystals subjected to a rotating magnetic field and a high frequency electric field. FitzHugh Nagumo model quanlitatively modeled various chemical reactions and the front solutions were investigated in this solution. Reduced dynamical equations for the FN model were derived that explained the front dynamics close to the boundary. It was observed that the dynamics in the highly nonadiabatic limit was controllesd …

Comparing Cartesian Closed Categories Of (Core) Compactly Generated Spaces, Martín Escardó, Jimmie Lawson, Alex Simpson
Faculty Publications
It is well known that, although the category of topological spaces is not Cartesian closed, it possesses many Cartesian closed full subcategories, e.g.: (i) compactly generated Hausdorff spaces; (ii) quotients of locally compact Hausdorff spaces, which form a larger category; (iii) quotients of locally compact spaces without separation axiom, which form an even larger one; (iv) quotients of core compact spaces, which is at least as large as the previous; (v) sequential spaces, which are strictly included in (ii); and (vi) quotients of countably based spaces, which are strictly included in the category (v). We give a simple and uniform …

Unified Theory Of The Ab-Plane And C-Axis Penetration Depths Of Underdoped Cuprates, Daniel E. Sheehy, T. P. Davis, M. Franz
Faculty Publications
We formulate a model describing the doping (x) and temperature (T) dependence of the ab-plane and c-axis penetration depth of a cuprate superconductor. The model incorporates the suppression of the superfluid density with underdoping as the system approaches the Mott-Hubbard insulating state by augmenting a d-wave BCS model with a phenomenological charge renormalization factor that is vanishingly small for states away from the nodes of the d-wave pair potential but close to unity in the vicinity of the nodes. The c-axis penetration depth is captured within a model of incoherent electron tunneling between the CuO2 planes. Application of this model …

We show that if a knot has a minimal spanning surface that admits certain Gabai disks, then a manifold obtained by ±1-Dehn surgery along the knot has infinite fundamental group. As one of the applications we extend and simplify a recent result of Menasco and Zhang that closed 3-braid knots have Property P. Other applications are given. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. A Paley-Wiener Theorem For The Θ-Hypergeometric Transform: The Even Multiplicity Case, Gestur Ólafsson, Angela Pasquale
Faculty Publications
The Θ-hypergeometric functions generalize the spherical functions on Riemannian symmetric spaces and the spherical functions on non-compactly causal symmetric spaces. In this paper we consider the case of even multiplicity functions. We construct a differential shift operator Dm with smooth coefficients which generates the Θ-hypergeometric functions from finite sums of exponential functions. We then use this fact to prove a Paley-Wiener theorem for the Θ-hypergeometric transform. © 2004 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Let H be a non-semisimple Hopf algebra with antipode S of dimension pq over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 where p ≤ q are odd primes. We prove that Tr(S2p) = p2d where d ≡ pq (mod 4). As a consequence, if p, q are twin primes, then any Hopf algebra of dimension pq is semisimple. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Posets Having Continuous Intervals, Jimmie D. Lawson, Luoshan Xu
Faculty Publications
In this paper we consider posets in which each order interval [a,b] is a continuous poset or continuous domain. After developing some basic theory for such posets, we derive our major result: if X is a core compact space and L is a poset equipped with the Scott topology (assumed to satisfy a mild extra condition) for which each interval is a continuous sup-semilattice, then the function space of continuous locally bounded functions from X into L has intervals that are continuous sup-semilattices. This substantially generalizes known results for continuous domains. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A systematic procedure to directly extract the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling was discussed using the high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. Systematic tests were carried out to assess the effects of various parameters involved in the fitting and the robustness of the procedure against data imperfections. It was shown that the maximum entropy method (MEM) was used to overcome the data imperfections and numerical instability. It was found that ARPES allowed wider applicability and measurements along different directions compared to other traditional tunneling methods.

Construction of the first stage of the Pierre Auger Observatory has begun. The aim of the Observatory is to collect unprecedented information about cosmic rays above 1018 eV. The first phase of the project, the construction and operation of a prototype system, known as the engineering array, has now been completed. It has allowed all of the sub-systems that will be used in the full instrument to be tested under field conditions. In this paper, the properties and performance of these sub-systems are described and their success illustrated with descriptions of some of the events recorded thus far. © 2003 …
Impossibility Of C∞ Variation Or Formal Power Series Variation In Solutions To Hilbert's 17th Problem, Charles N. Delzell
Impossibility Of C∞ Variation Or Formal Power Series Variation In Solutions To Hilbert's 17th Problem, Charles N. Delzell

No matter how a positive semidefinite polynomial f ∈ ℝ[X1,...,Xn] is represented (according to E. Artin's 1926 solution to Hilbert's 17th problem) in the form f = ∑ piri2 (with 0 ≤ Pi ∈ ℝ and ri ∈ ℝ(X1,..., Xn), the pi and the coefficients of the ri cannot be chosen to depend in a C∞ (i.e., infinitely differentiable) manner upon the coefficients of f (unless deg f ≤, 2); formal powers series variation is also impossible. This answers a question we had raised in 1990 [Contemp. Math., vol. 155, Amer. Math. Soc., 1994, pp. 107-117], where we had already …

A connected graph is doubly connected if its complement is also connected. The following Ramsey-type theorem is proved in this paper. There exists a function h(n), defined on the set of integers exceeding three, such that every doubly connected graph on at least h(n) vertices must contain, as an induced subgraph, a doubly connected graph, which is either one of the following graphs or the complement of one of the following graphs: (1) Pn, a path on n vertices; (2) K1,ns, the graph obtained from K 1,n by subdividing an edge once; (3) K2,n\e, the graph obtained from K2,n by …

Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner
Coastal Wetland Subsidence Arising From Local Hydrologic Manipulations, R. Eugene Turner
Faculty Publications
Twenty-three estimates of soil subsidence rates arising under the influence of local hydrologic changes from flap-gates, weirs, dikes, and culverts in tidal wetlands were compared to 75 examples of subsidence in drained agricultural wetlands. The induced subsidence rates from these hydrologic modifications in tidal wetlands can continue for more than 100 years, and range between 1.67 to 0.10 cm yr−1 within 1 to 155 years after the hydrologic modifications commence. These subsidence rates are lower than in freshwater wetlands drained for agricultural purposes, decline with age, and are significant in comparison to the rates of global sea level rise or …

A probability calculus was used to simulate the early stages of protein folding in ab initio structure prediction. The probabilities of particular φ and ψ angles for each of 20 amino acids as they occur in crystal forms of proteins were used to calculate the amount of information necessary for the occurrence of given φ and ψ angles to be predicted. It was found that the amount of information needed to predict φ and ψ angles with 5° precision is much higher than the amount of information actually carried by individual amino acids in the polypeptide chain. To handle this …

The Generalized Segal-Bargmann Transform And Special Functions, Mark Davidson, Gestur Ólafsson
Faculty Publications
Analysis of function spaces and special functions are closely related to the representation theory of Lie groups. We explain here the connection between the Laguerre functions, the Laguerre polynomials, and the Meixner-Pollacyck polynomials on the one side, and highest weight representations of Hermitian Lie groups on the other side. The representation theory is used to derive differential equations and recursion relations satisfied by those special functions.

Inorganic Nitrogen Transformations At High Loading Rates In An Oligohaline Estuary, R. Eugene Turner, Q. Dortch, Nancy N. Rabalais

A well-defined nitrogen retention and turnover budget was estimated for a shallow oligohaline lake (Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA). In 1997 a month-long diversion of the Mississippi River filled the Lake with highly concentrated river water (80 µM nitrate) and lowered the salinity to 0 psu within 2 weeks. After the spillway was closed the Lake mixed with estuarine tidal waters and came to equilibrium over 4 months with the riverine, atmospheric and offshore water nitrogen sources. A flushing rate of 1.78% d−1 was estimated by analyzing a plot of ln salinity versus time for the first 120 days after the …

The annual loads of C,N,P, silicate, total suspended sediment (mass) and their yields (mass area−1) were estimated for six watersheds of the Mississippi River Basin (MRB) using water quality and water discharge records for 1973 to 1994. The highest load of suspended sediments is from the Missouri watershed (58 mt km2 yr−1), which is also the largest among the six major sub-basins. The Ohio watershed delivers the largest load of water (38%). The Upper Mississippi has the largest total nitrogen load (32%) and yield (1120 kg TN km2 yr−1). The loading of organic carbon, total phosphorus and silicate from the …

Below-Ground Biomass In Healthy And Impaired Salt Marshes, R. Eugene Turner, Erick M. Swenson, Charles S. Milan, James M. Lee, Thomas A. Oswald
Faculty Publications
Twelve salt marshes in south Louisiana (USA) were classified as either ‘impaired’ or ‘healthy’ before a summer sample collection of above- and below-ground biomass and determination of sediment accretion rates. The above-ground biomass of plant tissues was the same at both impaired and healthy salt marshes and was not a good predictor of marsh health. However, below-ground root biomass in the upper 30 cm was much lower in the impaired marshes compared to the healthy marshes. Compromises to root production apparently occur before there is an obvious consequence to the above-ground biomass, which may quickly collapse before remedial action can …

Loop Quantum Gravity And The Cyclic Universe, Martin Bojowald, Roy Maartens, Parampreet Singh

Loop quantum gravity introduces strong nonperturbative modifications to the dynamical equations in the semiclassical regime, which are responsible for various novel effects, including resolution of the classical singularity in a Friedman universe. Here we investigate the modifications for the case of a cyclic universe potential, assuming that we can apply the four-dimensional loop quantum formalism within the effective four-dimensional theory of the cyclic scenario. We find that loop quantum effects can dramatically alter the near-collision dynamics of the cyclic scenario. In the kinetic-dominated collapse era, the scalar field is effectively frozen by loop quantum friction, so that the branes approach …
