Encoding Imperialism: Homelessness In American Naturalism, 1890-1918., Janet M. Whyde
Encoding Imperialism: Homelessness In American Naturalism, 1890-1918., Janet M. Whyde
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Homelessness occurs with uncommon regularity in the works of American naturalists, and in each case, the result of a character's homelessness results in a crisis of social identity and self definition. This pattern recurs in the works of the canonically identified naturalists, such as Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser, as well as other writers who have only been tangentially associated with naturalism--Edith Wharton and Paul Laurence Dunbar, for example. In this study, I analyze the relationship between homelessness as it is represented in the novels and the political debate over the United States's imperialist aspirations at the turn …
The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak
The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether the Pueblo region of the Southwest United States is a legitimate linguistic area (LA). The Pueblo region has long been recognized as a cohesive culture area, but an in-depth examination of the Pueblo region as a linguistic area has not previously been done. Because a linguistic area is by definition an area in which linguistic features have spread through diffusion, traits which are widespread for other reasons (e.g., genetic inheritance or independent parallel development) must be eliminated as evidence for a Pueblo LA. The methodological approach which I adopt emphasizes the …
Strategic Adaptation In The Banking Industry: An Exploration Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Strategic Change Following Deregulation., Elton L. Scifres Jr
Strategic Adaptation In The Banking Industry: An Exploration Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Strategic Change Following Deregulation., Elton L. Scifres Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examined the antecedents and consequences of strategic change in the commercial banking industry between 1980 and 1987. Based on a review of the literature, a conceptual model was developed that predicted change would be influenced by two factors, adaptive forces and inertial forces. Adaptive forces include two factors that have been hypothesized to encourage change, prior performance and slack resources. Inertial forces include two factors sometimes thought to inhibit change, organizational size and age. Change outcomes were predicted to be influenced by degree of change and moderated by adaptive and inertial forces. Guided by previous theoretical and empirical …
A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Nationally, over $1.6 billion is spent incarcerating juveniles. Prevention, rather than correction is needed to reduce these costs. The cost in human lives exceeds the 56,000 incarcerated juveniles. It touches more than those who commit the offense. Victims, families of victims and families of the convicted juvenile also pay a price to one degree or another. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe variables which may impact recidivism rates of selected juveniles who were charged and have arrest records on file. The research was based upon East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, juvenile arrest files from 1981 through …
"Rag-Tag And Bob-Ends Of Old Stories": Biblical Intertextuality In Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, And O'Connor., Timothy Paul Caron
"Rag-Tag And Bob-Ends Of Old Stories": Biblical Intertextuality In Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, And O'Connor., Timothy Paul Caron
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Liqht in August, Moses, Man of the Mountain, Uncle Tom's Children, and Wise Blood all borrow from the South's religious traditions. Recognizing the authority given to the Book, Faulkner, Hurston, Wright, and O'Connor invoke and re-read its central stories, characters, and tropes in order to voice their individual contributions to the South's intra-cultural conversation on race. In various ways, each work claims the necessity of the South to revitalize its practice of biblical interpretation. All of these texts comment upon the South's racial struggles over exactly how the Bible was to be interpreted: is it a book to aid in …
Imagining Workers: The Working-Class Presence In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Lynn Watson
Imagining Workers: The Working-Class Presence In Late Nineteenth-Century American Literature. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Lynn Watson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines how late nineteenth-century American realist and naturalist narratives defuse the working-class drive for class self-determination and political power. The texts examined are Rebecca Harding Davis's "Life in the Iron Mills" (1861), Elizabeth Stuart Phelps's The Silent Partner (1871), Henry James's The Princess Casamassima (1886), William Dean Howells's A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890) and Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900). Each work is examined in the context of a specific proletarian insurgency that was taking place at roughly the same time, and sometimes the same place, in which the author was writing. Each text bears the impress of …

Gwen Bristow: A Biography With Criticism Of Her "Plantation Trilogy"., Billie J. Theriot
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Gwen Bristow was born September 16, 1903. Her father was a minister and church leader and her mother was a homemaker and housemother for residents of Southern Baptist Hospital nurses' home. Both had impressive genealogies. Bristow, a reporter in New Orleans for The Times-Picayune from July 9, 1925, to November 28, 1930, and February 5, 1932, to September 21, 1934, wrote for many periodicals throughout her life. Her marriage to Bruce Manning took her to Hollywood, where she lived from the summer of 1934 until late spring 1980. Bruce Manning's career as a script writer, director, and producer provided a …
Measuring And Linking School Professional Learning Environment Characteristics, Teacher Self And Organizational Efficacy, Receptivity To Change, And Multiple Indices Of School Effectiveness., Karen S. Loup
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
During the past two decades, several important lines of inquiry have been developed to study the complex organizational and learning environment features of schools. In addition, researchers, theorists and educational policy makers have become increasingly concerned about educational reform and change, and with establishing linkages between educational improvement efforts and the effectiveness of schools. The extant school effectiveness and effects literatures have primarily focused on student achievement as the school outcome/productivity variable of concern. Alternatively, the literature on the study of schools as organizations has primarily focused on the measurement of school organizational, cultural and environmental variables and linkages of …
The Southern Baptist Convention Reformation, 1979-1990: A Social Drama., William Stanley Stone Jr
The Southern Baptist Convention Reformation, 1979-1990: A Social Drama., William Stanley Stone Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From Michael Thompson, Richard Ellis, and Aaron Wildavsky's cultural theory perspective, the authoritarian and the individualistic ways of life have coexisted in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) for more than a century. In 1979, Southern Baptist fundamentalists began a concerted movement to reform the SBC according to authoritarian beliefs and social practices. From Victor Turner's dramaturgical perspective, the 1979-1990 Southern Baptist controversy was a social drama that transferred power and reshaped Southern Baptists' perception of the past, present, and future. Rhetorical strategies facilitated each stage of the fundamentalists' reformation movement and the moderate counter movement. The present study symbolically explicates …
A Southern Social Ethic: Political Economy In The Nineteenth-Century South. Mississippi, 1840-1910. (Volumes I And Ii)., Bradley G. Bond
A Southern Social Ethic: Political Economy In The Nineteenth-Century South. Mississippi, 1840-1910. (Volumes I And Ii)., Bradley G. Bond
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
As a study of the southern social ethic, this work discusses some of the most lasting themes of southern historiography: race and class, continuity and discontinuity. The social ethic might best be defined as a collection of ideas, at times contradictory, that suggest southerners' concepts of life in a good republic, citizenship, and proper economic behavior. It also examines the reality of life in a rural state as it experienced the process of modernization. The first third of the dissertation offers a definition of the social ethic. Liberty and virtue, white southerners believed, inhered in all who avoided enslavement, the …
Youth Labor Force Participation: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Family And Labor Market Characteristics., Diane Bradley Catalano Keithly
Youth Labor Force Participation: An Analysis Of The Influence Of Family And Labor Market Characteristics., Diane Bradley Catalano Keithly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study is to examine the influence of family characteristics and the local economy on youth larbor force participation. Using a representative national sample, data on 51,344 16- to 18-year-olds and their families are analyzed and combined with information on local labor markets. Although there are numerous studies dealing with labor force participation, decisions to seek employment are often treated as individual choices. Little is known about the influence of the family on youth labor force participation. This study attempts to fill this research gap. The family characteristics used in the study are household income, parental employment …

The Keepers And The Kept: The First Hundred Years Of The Tennessee State Prison System, 1830-1930. (Volumes I And Ii)., Larry D. Gossett
The Keepers And The Kept: The First Hundred Years Of The Tennessee State Prison System, 1830-1930. (Volumes I And Ii)., Larry D. Gossett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Tennessee built its first state penitentiary in Nashville in 1830 on Sixteenth and Church Streets on land that is now a downtown parking lot. Revisions in the criminal code made many offenses punishable by imprisonment instead of corporal or capital punishment, and the convict population grew steadily. Continuing concern was expressed by the General Assembly that the penitentiary be self-supporting, and much effort was expended at all levels of government to accomplish that end. This study covers the history of approximately the first one hundred years of the Tennessee State Prison System. It begins with an overview of the criminal …
Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang
Voices Of The Self In Daniel Defoe's Fiction: An Alternative Marxist Approach., Zaixin Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The alternative Marxist approach to literary criticism in the present study consists of three "vocal" modes of interpretation: the public voice, the private voice, and the homeless voice of the self. The public voice represents authorial visions of the ideological real projected by dominant ideology that covers up the "objective" real, while the private voice corresponds to the authorial conscious or unconscious insertion into radical ideology that turns the "objective" real into the ideological real. However, the homeless voice of the self obliterates any ties with history and authorial ideology. A personification of the Marxist "particular interest" of the self, …
The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett
The Making Of Meaning: Three Children's Responses To Three Researcher-Composed Narratives., Mary S. Everett
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three children's responses to three research-composed narratives were investigated. Participants were eight-year-old girls from the lower S.E.S., African-American culture. Study focuses on the composing processes used to write three children's stories and the responses of children to the stories. The author's intended meaning was compared with the children's construction of meaning. After each story was read aloud, response was elicited by each participant retelling the story and answering open-ended interview questions. One week later the participant was asked to retell the story a second time to determine changes in concept of story. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory methodology. …

The Clan Of Toil: Piney Woods Labor Relations In The Trans-Mississippi South, 1880-1920. (Volumes I-Iii)., John Reed Tarver
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Lumber boomed in the Reconstructed South, an industrial binge that, by 1920, changed the landscape, first removing the forest then replacing its subsistence economy with consumerism. Men with money made fortunes in lumber. West of the Mississippi and south of the Missouri, it became a bonanza by 1880. Within these boundaries, black and white farmers and field hands sought "public work" in sawmills and log fronts. Most were unskilled. Steam power changed their lives, although all did not respond alike. They kept their folk ways, consistent with the new industry, despite their bondage to machines. Although most workers voluntarily entered …
A History Of Rudimental Drumming In America From The Revolutionary War To The Present., Eric Alan Chandler
A History Of Rudimental Drumming In America From The Revolutionary War To The Present., Eric Alan Chandler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rudimental drumming gained significance in America during the period of the Revolution. Ever since the late eighteenth-century and through the nineteenth-century, it was used exclusively in the military. This study traces the migration of drum rudiments and their use in military settings from Great Britain to America. The contributions of the Swiss drummers and the incorporation of their drum music into American rudimental drumming are also examined. The introductory chapter covers related pertinent and prefatory topics such as a definition of rudimental drumming, the duties of the military drummer, non-rudimental types of drumming and a summary of the origin and …

Factors Related To Turnover Intentions Of Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service Agents., Bonnie Carolyn Gaddis Carter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to expand the theoretical knowledge of the March and Simon (1958) "decision to participate" model as modified by Jackofsky (1982, 1984) and examined by Jackofsky and Peters (1983). Specifically, the study examined the relationship between employee turnover intentions and various predictors of turnover, including (a) desirability of movement (organizational commitment); (b) ease of movement; (c) the interaction of perceived desirability of movement (organizational commitment) and perceived ease of movement from the organization; (d) job satisfaction; (e) central life interest; and (f) selected employee demographic variables. Two-hundred forty Extension agents employed by Louisiana Cooperative Extension …
Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii
Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today, we differentiate snare drum performance into one of two broad styles, usually referred to as orchestral and rudimental. Since all early examples of orchestral snare drum literature are rudimental or military in nature, the evolution of present-day orchestral snare drum performance from its military origin deserves careful study. The objectives of this monograph were to investigate: the function of the snare drum prior to its use in the orchestra, the origins of the use of the snare drum in the orchestra, and the developments of orchestral snare drum performance practice. This study concluded that the movement of the snare …

From Forest, Stream, And Sea: Aspects Of Self-Sufficiency In The Nineteenth Century Louisiana Diet. (Volumes I And Ii)., James Patrick Whelan Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies of foodstuff self-sufficiency in the antebellum South have shown that during the middle third of the nineteenth century, as represented by the census years 1840, 1850 and 1860, certain regions of Louisiana suffered from meat production deficits. It has been assumed by most interested scholars that these deficits were overcome by importing pork and beef from the midwest or Upper South. Other possible sources of meat supplements that have not been generally considered are the wild game and fishery resources of the state. Hunting and fishing have long traditions as important activities in the South in general and in …
Musical Reverberations: Echoes Of Friedrich Schlegel And Heinrich Heine In Nietzsche's Dionysian Aesthetics., Linda Fallon Duncan
Musical Reverberations: Echoes Of Friedrich Schlegel And Heinrich Heine In Nietzsche's Dionysian Aesthetics., Linda Fallon Duncan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Not only did Friedrich Nietzsche acknowledge his stylistic affinity for Heinrich Heine, but both writers--despite their overt criticism of certain aspects of German Romanticism--manifest significant parallels in style with the aesthetic formulations of the Romantic theorist Friedrich Schlegel for a new direction in contemporary literature. Friedrich Schlegel's Fragment 116 of the Athenaum, for example, designates this new poetic direction as "progressive universal poetry," and characterizes it as a poetic form capable of embracing the fluctuating multiplicity of the surrounding world as well as reflecting the developing ideas and individual personality of the poet-creator. The paradoxical result is a poetry that …
The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry
The Legacy Of The Hawaiian Cultivator In Windward Valleys Of Hawaii. (Volumes I And Ii)., Ronald Norman Terry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The composition of a forest of relicts of cultivation in four uninhabited valleys in Kohala, Hawaii, is documented. A general hypothesis is made that arboreal distribution patterns are a function of both historical land use and ecological interaction since abandonment. The physical and historical geography of the valleys was investigated. Climate varies little, but distinct geomorphic zones offer differing biological environments. Prehistoric land use consisted of taro patches with intercropped banks. Talus slope gardens supported the Polynesian tree crops 'ohi'a 'ai (Eugenia malaccensis), kukui (Aleurites moluccana), 'ulu, (Artocarpus incisus), ti (Cordyline terminalis), and noni (Morinda citrifolia), important in today's flora. …

The Southern Baptist Children's Choir Curricula From 1941 Through 1985 And Influences Of Major Music Education Trends Upon The Curricula., Susan Kitts Messer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Beginning in 1941 with the inception of the Church Music Department of the Southern Baptist Convention and continuing through 1985 with the publication of a set of curriculum texts, this study presents a history of the Southern Baptist children's choir curricula by describing the background development and content of each of the curriculum books, periodicals, and supplementary materials published during these years. Following the history of the development of the curricula, influences of major music education trends upon the curricula are discussed. The history of the development of the curricula is organized by periods: the organizational years of the Southern …
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster
A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Republican party organized its first presidential campaign in 1856. The party was composed of men from a wide variety of political backgrounds, primarily from free soil and anti-slavery groups. The rhetoric of this first Republican campaign represented the efforts of these individual speakers to reconcile their free soil arguments with the official party platform. Although the party was loosely organized and poorly funded, many respected orators participated in the campaign. As background for the rhetorical analysis, the major political and historical events of the decade are identified in the first two chapters. Bleeding Kansas, abolitionism, and the reorganization of …

Love And Rebellion: Louisiana Women Novelists, 1865-1919 (Wetmore)., Susan Millar Williams
Love And Rebellion: Louisiana Women Novelists, 1865-1919 (Wetmore)., Susan Millar Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a study of minor Louisiana women novelists from the end of the Civil War to the passage of women's suffrage. A large number of Louisiana women were spurred to write novels by the war and Reconstruction, motivated by both financial considerations and the need to explain their lives. They use conventional forms, like the plantation romance, but the stories they tell suggest that women were ambivalent about Southern traditions and the old order. In breaking down the social codes which both protected and repressed Louisiana women, the Civil War and the Reconstruction led Louisiana women novelists to …
The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii
The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …

Competitive Environment, Business Strategy, And Organization Structure: An Analysis Of Firm Performance., Masoud Hemmasi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research attempts to develop and empirically test an integrative model of business economic performance. The research framework includes certain concepts and relationships that emanate from the literature in Industrial Organization Economics, Business Policy, and Organization Theory. In general, the key tenet of the study is threefold: (a) that there are industry differences in types of challenges confronting top level management; (b) that strategic and organizational responses that different environmental challenges elicit are quite different and somewhat predictable; and (c) that the combination of the environmental, strategic, and organizational characteristics of the organizations affect their economic performance. The sample for …
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …
