Will The Real Jesus Please Stand Up?: Bridging The Divide Between The Jesus Seminar And Its Opponents Through A Burkeian Approach, Carol Melissa Hopson-Sparks
Will The Real Jesus Please Stand Up?: Bridging The Divide Between The Jesus Seminar And Its Opponents Through A Burkeian Approach, Carol Melissa Hopson-Sparks
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study employs a Burkeian cluster-agon analysis approach to analyze the rhetoric of four members of the Jesus Seminar; namely, Robert Funk, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and John Shelby Spong as well as that of two of the Jesus Seminar’s critics; Luke Timothy Johnson and N. Thomas Wright. Specifically, this study sought to discern the orientations or perspectives held by each of the examined rhetors in an effort to locate common ground or similar foundations within two seemingly disparate points of view. In doing so, this study creates a third perspective, or corrective, based on the orthopraxis approach of …

Conservation Versus Survival: A Cultural Ecological Study Of Changing Settlement Patterns, Cultures, And Land Use In The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve Of Northeast Honduras, Elizabeth Ann Fraser
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Conserving ecologically valuable areas is proclaimed a priority by governments, institutions, and citizens throughout the world. Preventing the erosion of the remaining indigenous cultures also receives widespread support. In response to these desires, numerous protected areas now exist; spaces that theoretically should attain both ecological and cultural preservation. However, many of these areas are found within a larger setting plagued by ongoing struggles to meet basic needs. Often these larger problems create a challenge to, if not work in opposition to, the original aims of protected areas. This study of nine communities looks at these and related issues in the …
Spirit Matter(S): Post-Dualistic Representations Of Spirituality In Fiction By Walker Percy, Toni Morrison And Gloria Naylor, Likourgos James Vassiliou
Spirit Matter(S): Post-Dualistic Representations Of Spirituality In Fiction By Walker Percy, Toni Morrison And Gloria Naylor, Likourgos James Vassiliou
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Spirit Matter(s): Post-Dualism Representations of Spirituality in Fiction by Walker Percy, Toni Morrison and Gloria Naylor, examines the ways in which these authors have presented spirituality in The Moviegoer, Song of Solomon, and Mama Day respectively. In these works, spirituality is a need for connection among humans in this world, rather than a notion that points to dualistic views of the spiritual and the material as two different realms. Through this perspective on spirituality as a reality of the physical world, the political and socio-economic problems of the world are not—nor can they be—set aside in favor of the spiritual …
Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii
Subversive Aspects Of American Musical Theatre, Donald Elgan Whittaker Iii
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Critical discourse regarding musical theatre takes, for the most part, the form of a profound silence, due presumably to a dismissal of the genre as simplistic and insubstantial. Not only have the elements of musical theatre been present in the majority of theatrical history, but many of the greatest theories regarding theatre have included these elements, including Brecht and Wagner. Musicals have also often concerned themselves with the Other, centering and sympathizing him/her in a manner unavailable to non-musical works. The Others that have thus been positioned are often delineated from hegemonic groups which are concretely those in power, but …
Liberty And Authority In Colonial Georgia, 1717-1776, Andrew C. Lannen
Liberty And Authority In Colonial Georgia, 1717-1776, Andrew C. Lannen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Few historical works examine the society and politics of both the Trustee and royal periods of Colonial Georgia. This dissertation highlights the central theme that binds the two eras together: the delicate balance between liberty and authority. Colonists believed that the greatest threat to liberty was the potential for the mother country to acquire undue power. To guard against that danger, settlers supported the establishment of strong local sources of authority within the colony that would act as a check against excessive imperial power. The Trustees initially used land, slavery, and trade restrictions to deny political and economic power to …

"Encourager Le Commerce Et Répandre Les LumiʹEre" : The Press, The Provinces And The Origins Of The Revolution In France: 1750-1789, Stephen Auerbach
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the political, intellectual, and cultural significance of France's provincial newspaper press, called affiches, published between 1750-1789. Combining the histories of the press, provincial life, and the public sphere, this dissertation explores the ways in which the affiches became an indispensable part of local economic, cultural, and intellectual life while at the same time articulated a world view that was antithetical to the tenets of monarchical absolutism. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the origins, form and contents of the provincial press. Faced with the twin obstacles of laws governing censorship and privilege, provincial newspapers eschewed …
Protecting 'Place' In African -American Neighborhoods: Urban Public Space, Privatization, And Protest In Louis Armstrong Park And The Treme, New Orleans., Michael Eugene Crutcher Jr
Protecting 'Place' In African -American Neighborhoods: Urban Public Space, Privatization, And Protest In Louis Armstrong Park And The Treme, New Orleans., Michael Eugene Crutcher Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the past fifteen years, urban scholars have increasingly studied "the end of public space." Central to their arguments are the thesis that these communal spaces, traditionally held by city governments and theoretically open for use by all citizens, are waning. Much of this space has become "privatized." Corporations and individuals often buy, renovate, and design such spaces either in conjunction with city programs or as part of their urban renewal, gentrification, and development plans. These plans often seek to exclude certain minority groups or target spaces in low-income communities. The process is largely driven by the present need for …
Worldly Rites: The Social And Political Significance Of Religious Services In Louisiana, 1803--1865., Julia Huston Nguyen
Worldly Rites: The Social And Political Significance Of Religious Services In Louisiana, 1803--1865., Julia Huston Nguyen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In antebellum and Civil War Louisiana, religious rituals contained more than spiritual meaning. They also carried social and political significance that can illustrate a great deal about that society. Sabbath services, holidays, revivals, baptisms, weddings, and funerals all reflected the values that Louisianans believed to be important. By looking at religion and the ways that residents of Louisiana experienced it, not only on a daily basis but also during the major milestones of life, one can come to a greater understanding of the ways in which they structured their society and interacted with it. Through an examination of Louisiana religion, …
Women And The Law Of Property Under Louisiana Civil Law, 1782--1835., Sara Jane Brooks Sundberg
Women And The Law Of Property Under Louisiana Civil Law, 1782--1835., Sara Jane Brooks Sundberg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores the influence of Louisiana civil law on women's property ownership between 1782 and 1835. Louisiana civil law offered women significant advantages over the predominant common law tradition found in most early American states. Louisiana civil law, unlike common law, allowed a married woman to retain her legal identity, her personal property and her right to monetary rewards from her labors within the family. A woman in early Louisiana owned half the property accumulated during marriage and she inherited her half of the property at the dissolution of the marriage. She also owned and could administer separate property. …

The Power Of Ethnicity: The Preservation Of Scots -Irish Culture In The Eighteenth-Century American Backcountry., Kevin Lee Yeager
The Power Of Ethnicity: The Preservation Of Scots -Irish Culture In The Eighteenth-Century American Backcountry., Kevin Lee Yeager
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The character of the Scots-Irish has been shrouded in myth almost from the moment the first Ulster immigrants disembarked at Philadelphia in the 1710s. Contemporaries condemned the Scots-Irish as lazy, illiterate, uncouth, and violent. Later hagiographers, however, praised them as ruggedly individualistic, liberty-loving people who brought civilization to the American wilderness. Recent historians have done little to advance this debate. While re-stating these simplistic stereotypes, modern scholars have failed to ground their arguments in extensive analyses of primary sources. While numerous monographs studying other ethnic and cultural groups in colonial America have appeared over the last thirty years, none as …
Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung
Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative research study investigated the history of Our Lady of the Lake College from 1923 through 2000. It endeavored to determine the influence of the times, the events, the people, and the traditions that have contributed to its development and progress in the seventy-seven years that have passed since it was established. The study also sought to document the important institutional events that transpired during this time period and establish a continuity of the College's progress through the years from a hospital-based diploma program in nursing to a free standing degree granting institution. In addition to the evolutionary development …
School Life On The Mississippi: An Inquiry Into The Impact Of The Louisiana Reform Movement Related To Standards In World History Instruction In Three Secondary School Settings., Michael Joseph Schramm
School Life On The Mississippi: An Inquiry Into The Impact Of The Louisiana Reform Movement Related To Standards In World History Instruction In Three Secondary School Settings., Michael Joseph Schramm
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of standards on the instruction of world history in three secondary school settings. Contact with the Department of Education of the State of Louisiana found that the implementation of standards had only begun in 1997. After a grace period for implementation, the inaugural testing of the accountability system for these standards occurred in the spring of 2000. Therefore, this study became an exploratory investigation into the use of standards as they impact world history instruction. The first research question was designed to assist the researcher in exploring the influence that …
The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson
The Women On/Of The Porch: Performative Space In African-American Women's Fiction., Lajuan Evette Simpson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mediating Structures in African-American literature are essential in the formation of identity in the lives of the characters. Contemporary theory has moved into a deeper layer of hermeneutics beyond self/other dichotomies to look at the space between binary opposites. Therefore, modern theorists look at sites of play, of exchange, and of transformation. The porch is such a space. A mediating structure is a space that allows the various characters to develop and define themselves. Because of African-Americans, lack of freedom, it was important for them to find a space in which they were able to move and express their ideas, …
Crossing Over: An Oral History Of The Desegregation Experience Of Public School Personnel In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Douglas Raymond Davis
Crossing Over: An Oral History Of The Desegregation Experience Of Public School Personnel In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana., Douglas Raymond Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Fall of 1970 marked an important change in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System. In the previous 1969--70 school year, only three thousand out of twenty-three thousand African American children in the district attended school with White children. In 1970, the number rose to nearly nineteen thousand. In addition, for the first time, school personnel, busses, and extra curricular activities were desegregated. Over six-hundred teachers began the 1970 school year teaching in schools that were previously and predominantly another race. This event, known as the "cross-over," is the subject of this dissertation. The historical study of the …
Rhetoric And Social Struggle: In Search Of The Topoi Of Violence., Edward Christopher Reilly
Rhetoric And Social Struggle: In Search Of The Topoi Of Violence., Edward Christopher Reilly
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The rhetorical study of violence tends to examine violence within larger generic boundaries such as social movements studies or war rhetoric. In order to work toward a generalizable rhetorical theory of violence and discourse, this study examines texts which justify violence across generic boundaries. Accordingly, four case studies individually examine texts which justify political violence. This study compares and contrasts the rhetorical strategies of George Bush, the Unabomber, Earth First! and Abbie Hoffman. This study concludes that there are no universal strategies among the four case studies in the justification of violence. However, there appears to be a continuum of …

An Historical Analysis Of Elementary-Level Art Education Supported By The Puerto Rican Department Of Public Instruction From 1898-1990., Camille Galanes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Visual Arts Education Division of the Puerto Rican Department of Education is currently developing a plan for educational reform. One intent of this plan is to secure art programs within the core of curriculum reform. In my dissertation I establish the imperative need of historical research as the first step in so securing art programs. Without historical research, educational reforms could result in an idealization of purposes with uncritical adherence to tradition. Art education requires an analysis of its development on the island rather than a mere listing of the most prominent events. My study, the first of its …
Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
Nature And The Divine: Classical Greek Philosophy And The Political In The Thought Of Leo Strauss And Eric Voegelin., Todd Eric Myers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The following work is an attempt to clarify the relationship of two of the most significant political thinkers of the later part of the twentieth century. Previous scholarship on the relationship between Leo Strauss and Eric Voegelin has focused on the two men's different interpretations of the religious traditions of Judaism and Christianity. In this work, we explore the two men's presentations of classical Greek philosophy to illuminate how their differing readings of the classics come to similar conclusions regarding the nature and limits of the political. Our investigation probes how Strauss's treatment of philosophy as being slightly more comic …

The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical And Political Contexts Of Court Counsel In "The Canterbury Tales"., Marc S. Guidry
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Counsel Group: Rhetorical and Political Contexts of Court Counsel in The Canterbury Tales argues that counsel-taking is one of the most important themes in Chaucer's masterwork. Court counsel--which includes giving the ruler or lord political advice, making laws and treaties, and passing judicial sentence--was a major form of medieval discourse that recurs throughout Ricardian poetry. Indeed, the modern principle of consultative government has its roots in the medieval discourse of counsel and consent. As a diplomat in the service of Richard II, member of parliament, and acquaintance of several leading members of the king's council, Chaucer was well positioned …
Among Women: Toni Morrison's Mothers, Sisters, And Daughters., Hazel Ruth Reames Caillouet
Among Women: Toni Morrison's Mothers, Sisters, And Daughters., Hazel Ruth Reames Caillouet
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This work explores the relationships between and among women in the fiction of Toni Morrison. Morrison's mothers, sisters, and daughters cannot function without the love and support of a community of women. Those characters who abandon or reject this community become lost to their own world. Morrison women, thus, find themselves in and through other women. The first two chapters establish Morrison's characters in relation to those of other authors in order to show her unique sense of community. Comparing Morrison's work to Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own and her emphasis on individuality and isolation illustrates Morrison's dependence …
The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison
The Terminology Of Composition Studies: A Historical Approach., Kimberly Lynn Harrison
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, composition scholars have shown interest in examining their own language. My study furthers this interest by providing a historical analysis of the terminology commonly used in composition studies. The historical focus allows an analysis of how our vocabulary has changed in relation to specific schools of thought in composition studies, thus encouraging an awareness of the influence of context--professional, institutional, cultural, and personal--on the scholarship in composition studies. Such influences, I argue, are often ignored to the detriment of our discipline. Chapter one further explains the scope and purpose of my study. Chapters two and three analyze in-depth two …
A Feminist Study Of African American Art In New Orleans: Considerations Of Aesthetics, Art History And Art Criticism., Harriet Joanne Walker
A Feminist Study Of African American Art In New Orleans: Considerations Of Aesthetics, Art History And Art Criticism., Harriet Joanne Walker
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
How students are taught to think about what is considered "art" and who are "artists" contributes to their sense of self within the world. It can confine them to accept a system that devalues and excludes or it can inspire them to explore the political dimensions of art, to recognize social contradictions, and to contribute to cultural dialogue. The purpose of this study is to provide content for an art curriculum that develops the intellectual capabilities and broadens the critical consciousness of students. The study of aesthetics, art history, and art criticism offer possibilities for understanding the multiple social, historical, …
A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath
A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This history, written from a feminist perspective, uses historical materials which trace unusual social and educational experiments in Fairhope, Alabama, in the early twentieth century. The early development of the utopian Fairhope community, founded by E. B. Gaston and a group of like-minded midwestern social reformers, is reviewed. Gaston's resolve to alleviate the worst inequities of monopolistic capitalism through practicing the single tax principles of Henry George is placed in historical context. Both the social experiment and its ideologically complementary Organic School are situated within the period known as the progressive era which followed closely upon the industrial revolution. The …

Voices In The Storm: Confederate Rhetoric, 1861-1865., Karen Elizabeth Fritz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From 1861 to 1865, as white southerners waged their unsuccessful struggle for independence, they experienced shattering calamities. With the Civil War mostly fought on southern soil, Confederates witnessed the destruction of their environment, the deaths of their friends and family members, and the demise of their slave labor system. This study concerns the effects of this experience on the southern mindset. In short, this is an examination of discovery and transformation through ordeal. The Confederacy has been the subject of many a historical study. However, this interpretation approaches the subject from a slightly different perspective. Departing from the traditional reliance …
