Cardiovascular disparities remain pervasive in the United States. Unequal disease burden is evident among population groups based on sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, educational attainment, nativity, or geography. Despite the significant declines in cardiovascular disease mortality rates in all demographic groups during the last 50 years, large disparities remain by sex, race, ethnicity, and geography. Recent data from modeling studies, linked micromap plots, and small-Area analyses also demonstrate prominent variation in cardiovascular disease mortality rates across states and counties, with an especially high disease burden in the southeastern United States and Appalachia. Despite these continued disparities, few large-scale intervention studies …

Secession On Trial: The Treason Prosecution Of Jefferson Davis, Peter Charles Hoffer Jan 2018

Secession On Trial: The Treason Prosecution Of Jefferson Davis, Peter Charles Hoffer

Civil War Book Review

The tension between strict legalism and practical politics was perfectly illustrated in the treatment of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Cynthia Nicoletti holds both the J.D. and the Ph. D. and the present work demonstrates her facility in both law and political history. She rightly treats the prosecution of Davis as a story rather than a legal treatise, bringing alive the people and the problems on both sides of the case. Davis’s trial was supposed to be the test case of the legality of secession, but he was never actually tried.

Reconstruction In A Globalizing World, Aaron Sheehan-Dean

Civil War Book Review

Reconstruction, perhaps alone among the major historical eras, has remained resistant to this process of reinterpretation. As David Prior's edited collection, Reconstruction in a Globalizing World, explains, there are good reasons for this relative insularity.

Spatial Integration And The Underlying Mechanisms Of Cross-Modality Interference, Danielle A. Lutfi-Proctor, Emily M. Elliott, Edward J. Golob Jan 2018

Spatial Integration And The Underlying Mechanisms Of Cross-Modality Interference, Danielle A. Lutfi-Proctor, Emily M. Elliott, Edward J. Golob

Researchers have often utilized the classic Stroop task as a measure of selective attention processes. While it is largely agreed upon that semantic interference plays a role in the classic task, the role of attentional processes is less clear. The picture is further muddied when variations on the classic task are used. For example, the cross-modal Stroop task, in which one names the color of visual items while ignoring distracting auditory color words, typically leads to smaller sized interference effects and little or no facilitation when compared to the classic task. Furthermore, relationship(s) with working memory capacity have only been …

Looking At The Big Picture: Understanding How The Oviduct's Dialogue With Gametes And The Embryo Shapes Reproductive Success, Beatriz Fernandez-Fuertes, Beatriz Rodríguez-Alonso, José María Sánchez, Constantine A. Simintiras, Patrick Lonergan, Dimitrios Rizos Jan 2018

Simintiras, Patrick Lonergan, Dimitrios Rizos

Faculty Publications

The oviduct is a tubular organ comprising three distinct anatomical regions (the infundibulum, the ampulla and the isthmus) connecting the ovary and the uterus. Oviductal function is regulated by ovarian hormones, gametes, and embryo-derived factors, for optimally facilitating key reproductive events. A cross-talk is established between the oviduct and the gametes and embryo and this dialogue shapes the microenvironment in which gamete transport, fertilization, and early embryonic development occur. This review aims to address each participant in this conversation in a holistic manner by delineating several advances in the field within the greater context of understanding how oviduct-gamete and oviduct-embryo …

Insects that live in the saltwater and brackish marshes, which fringe the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, are largely unstudied. During 2011-2013, a survey of insect fauna of the coastal salt marshes of the Mississippi Delta in Louisiana was conducted. We present the species of terrestrial representatives of Heteroptera and Auchenorrhyncha collected during that study. The Auchenorrhyncha are represented by 33 species in 6 families, with Cicadellidae (16 species) and Delphacidae (13 spp.), and are the most diverse. The terrestrial heteropterans are represented by 11 species in 5 families with the majority of species in Miridae (6 spp.). …

Cherokee In Controversy: The Life Of Jesse Bushyhead, Zachery Cowsert Jan 2018

Cherokee In Controversy: The Life Of Jesse Bushyhead, Zachery Cowsert

Civil War Book Review

Dan Wimberly’s Cherokee in Controversy examines the life of Jesse Bushyhead, a Cherokee minister, interpreter, and leader throughout the first half of the 19th century. Overlooked by historians, Wimberly traces Bushyhead’s life through the course of seven chapters, utilizing Bushyhead’s story to likewise explore “divisive political, economic, and social developments among Cherokees” in the early 19th century (viii).

Medicalizing Blackness: Making Racial Difference In The Atlantic World, 1780-1840, Alexandra Cornelius

Civil War Book Review

Using compelling evidence collected from archives in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, South Carolina, and Philadelphia, Rana Hogarth argues persuasively that physicians working among enslaved societies in the Atlantic world during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries played a decisive role in the racialization of physiological and physical differences among humans.

Chaucer's Divided "I": Narrative Voice And Performance Dynamics In Late Fourteenth-Century English Literature, Isaac Mcduffie Dec 2017

Chaucer's Divided "I": Narrative Voice And Performance Dynamics In Late Fourteenth-Century English Literature, Isaac Mcduffie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Throughout the twentieth century, various Chaucer scholars have worked to achieve the now-consensus opinion that Chaucer wrote his works expecting them to be both listened to within a group setting and read privately in an individual setting. These scholars have either assumed or expressly stated that the experience of listening to and reading Chaucer’s works would have been the same. This dissertation argues otherwise. I show that in the late fourteenth century, English vernacular was only starting to be understood as a written language, and this peculiar circumstance created tensions between both listening and reading modes of reception. Such tensions …

Although species lists from throughout Amazonia have become available, relatively complete inventories based on longterm work remain rare. Longitudinal comparisons at well-studied sites provide the best opportunities for describing communities and identifying changes in regional avifaunas. Within central Amazonia, no region has received as much consistent ornithological coverage as the terra firme forests north of Manaus, Brazil, at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP). Here we provide an updated list of the area, including notes on all species added between 1997 and 2017. We recorded 21 species new for the site, most of which (>75%) are birds …

The Louisiana Bird Atlas Project is a multi-year citizen science effort designed to quantify bird distribution and abundance for all species regularly occurring in the state of Louisiana during two time periods: summer and winter. Data were collected by volunteers in a citizen science framework across eight years, from 2007 to 2014. A total of 351 species was recorded (254 during the Summer Bird Atlas and 315 during the Winter Bird Atlas). Maps showing distribution and relative abundance for each species were generated within a Geographical Information System, and were accompanied by short descriptions of status, distribution, abundance, and other …

Allende, Castro, And Pinochet: An Analysis Of Forms Of Address In Political Speeches, Sophie Green Nov 2017

Allende, Castro, And Pinochet: An Analysis Of Forms Of Address In Political Speeches, Sophie Green

LSU Master's Theses

The central discussion of this thesis concentrates on the uses of ‘we’ and ‘they’ within the corpus of six speeches given by Latin American political leaders in the mid-to-late 20th century. Existing research explains that one’s definition of self as well as a country’s national identity is largely based on the perception of ‘other’ (Costelloe 2014: 322). In other words, the manner in which political speakers discuss the collective ‘we’ and refer to foreign adversaries with the use of ‘they’ can greatly influence national identity. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the importance of address forms and …

As part of the discussion, I conduct field research within the local area of the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in providing demonstrations of live and informal classical performance in various businesses and institutions while collecting data via surveys from willing adult participants (ages 18 and above) of all demographics, specifically lower income areas. The survey analysis gives important insights into public perception of symphony …

The Shining School Upon The Hill: Teacher Subjectivity In A "Successful" Charter School, Gareth David Connor Mitchell Nov 2017

The Shining School Upon The Hill: Teacher Subjectivity In A "Successful" Charter School, Gareth David Connor Mitchell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation adds to the growing body of literature on charter school reform. Through the use of double insight, this paper details the tensions between school structures and teacher experience at a “successful” urban charter school. How do teachers construct their subjectivities in relation to a charter school’s mission and guiding philosophy? What are the inter-actions between these teacher biographies and the school’s prominent structures? This paper problematizes common discourse on charters, often reduced to identifying schools as either “good” or “bad,” to contribute to a more nuanced discussion between charter advocates and opponents.

This research utilizes a theoretical framework …

A Performer's Guide To Iosif Andriasov's "Concertino For Trumpet", Andrew K. Gerbitz Nov 2017

A Performer's Guide To Iosif Andriasov's "Concertino For Trumpet", Andrew K. Gerbitz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Iosif Andriasov’s Concertino for Trumpet is an excellent candidate for study and assimilation into the standard trumpet repertoire. A significant composer of Armenian descent from the former Soviet Union, Andriasov wrote his Concerto for Trumpet in 1960 and dedicated it to Yuri Usov. Timofei Dokshizer performed it on an album released in 1978 under the Melodya label. After immigrating to the United States in 1979, the composer revised the work and retitled it as Concertino for Trumpet in 1995. IMMA Publishing Company in New York made the revised work commercially available in 2001. This paper is presented to increase awareness …

Producing "Fabulous": Commodification And Ethnicity In Hair Braiding Salons, Sylviane Ngandu-Kalenga Greensword

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Black women wearing fabulous braids are a striking feature of the Afro-diasporic cultural landscape. However, the braiders and salon owners who enable this aesthetic engineering are seldom acknowledged. This dissertation investigates the experience and role of Caribbean and West and Central African women in the hair braiding industry, a rapidly growing business in the U.S. I address the complexity of these women’s multiple social roles and the multiple consciousness (King, 1988) associated with their demographic characteristics (color, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and immigrant status). The commonalities between the braiders and their mostly African American customers contrast vividly with their perception of …

Francolouisianais In The 21st Century: Redrawing Identity Lines In A Community Experiencing Language Shift, Marguerite L. Perkins Nov 2017

Francolouisianais In The 21st Century: Redrawing Identity Lines In A Community Experiencing Language Shift, Marguerite L. Perkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The francophonie of south Louisiana today is characterized by a great deal of diversity - in terms of ethnicity, language practices, cultural practices, geography, and experience. The academic literature does not always reflect this diversity, however. Some ethnic groups are overshadowed by others in academic study, and the lines between them are often uncritically blurred. Discussions of language shift are regularly mired in assumptions of individuals’ complete linguistic and cultural assimilation based solely on their native use of English.

In this dissertation, I seek to problematize traditional accounts of assimilation and collective ethnic identity by highlighting the ways in which …

Input variable selection techniques, including Random Forests (RF) and Forwards Binary Logistic Regression (FBLR), were used to identify the significant model input variables among six independent environmental predictors including water temperature, solar radiation, gage height, …

Disproportionality In Discipline Practices: Assessing The Impact Of Unique Contextual Factors Resulting From School Reforms On Discipline, Stephanie Marie Grant Nov 2017

Disproportionality In Discipline Practices: Assessing The Impact Of Unique Contextual Factors Resulting From School Reforms On Discipline, Stephanie Marie Grant

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

With the implementation of the No Child Left Behind act (NCLB, 2001) sweeping school accountability reforms were instituted across the country. Failure to meet the accountability expectations set forth in the law resulted in punitive measures including school closure, restructuring, and chartering. The impact of the NCLB school reforms on student discipline outcomes at the school level, were assessed. Schools in the state of Louisiana were compared along two dimensions of reform, school type, (Charter vs Traditional) and school governance (Local vs State Run). Analyses indicated differences in student discipline outcomes based on reform variables.

School reforms impacted student outcomes, …

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian Nov 2017

Development Of A Mode And Destination Type Joint Choice Model For Hurricane Evacuation, Ruijie Bian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since Hurricane Katrina, transit evacuation service has been seen to serve critical needs in affected cities and an increasing number of hurricanes have struck the east coast where more people rely on public transportation to evacuate. Thus, it is important to model mode choice in evacuation for a better estimation of evacuation transit demand. In this study, a joint mode and destination type choice model was estimated based on multiple post-storm behavioral surveys from the northeastern seaboard to the Gulf coast. A Nested Logit model specification was used to estimate this joint choice model. The estimated model showed significant linkage …

Multigeneration Effects Of Chronic Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Gulf Killifish (Fundulus Grandis), Andrea Yammine Nov 2017

Multigeneration Effects Of Chronic Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Gulf Killifish (Fundulus Grandis), Andrea Yammine

LSU Master's Theses

The goal of this study was to examine potential adaptation within two generations of Gulf killifish exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) while also investigating the use of mucus as an effective and non-lethal alternative to determine concentrations of 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) and vitellogenin (VTG) of F. grandis. Multiple biomarkers were used to assess adaptation within these fish, such as lysozyme (enzyme critical in innate immunity), and 11-ketotestosterone and vitellogenin (endocrine hormones often affected by PAHs).

Mucal concentrations of 11-KT and VTG were determined and evaluated for effectiveness through comparative assays with blood plasma. This method was then applied to …
