Classification Accuracy Of Teacher Ratings When Screening Nonmainstream English-Speaking Kindergartners For Language Impairment In The Rural South, Kyomi D. Gregory, Janna B. Oetting Apr 2018

Classification Accuracy Of Teacher Ratings When Screening Nonmainstream English-Speaking Kindergartners For Language Impairment In The Rural South, Kyomi D. Gregory, Janna B. Oetting

Faculty Publications

Purpose: We compared teacher ratings as measured by the Teacher Rating of Oral Language and Literacy (TROLL; Dickinson, McCabe, & Sprague, 2001, 2003) and Children’s Communication Checklist–Second Edition (CCC-2; Bishop, 2006) to 2 established screeners, the Part II of the Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation–Screening Test (DELV-ST-II; Seymour, Roeper, & de Villiers, 2003) and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills–Next (DIBELS; Good, Gruba, & Kaminski, 2009), and then examined whether teacher ratings alone or when combined with the DELV-ST-II or DIBELS accurately classify nonmainstream English-speaking kindergartners by their clinical status. Method: Data came from 98 children who lived in …

Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane Apr 2018

Parenting In The Context Of Deportation Risk, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Jennifer L. Scott, Monica Faulkner, Liza Barros Lane

Faculty Publications

Nearly 5.1 million children younger than age 18 live with at least one undocumented parent, about 7% of the U.S. child population. Between 2010 and 2013, an estimated 300,000 parents of U.S. citizen children were deported. Raising children in the context of deportation risk increases overall parenting stress for undocumented Latino parents. To investigate this and understand the experience of undocumented parenting, the authors interviewed 70 undocumented parents in two Southwest cities from 2012 to 2013. The authors frame their analysis using the lens of the problem of “illegality.” There are three domains of stressors associated with parenting in the …

A Turning Point In The Life Course: A Comparative Analysis Of Influences Of Military Service On Mental Health And Deviance, Ugur Orak Apr 2018

A Turning Point In The Life Course: A Comparative Analysis Of Influences Of Military Service On Mental Health And Deviance, Ugur Orak

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Military service is an important school of training and one of the largest employers in the U.S., functioning as a major turning point in the lives of millions of American individuals. Whether serving in the military has a beneficial or a detrimental impact on individuals’ tendencies to engage in deviant behaviors has long been discussed and empirical studies have presented inconsistent results. In addition, research examining the interplay between military service, deviance, and mental health has generally focused on the service in a combat zone or during wartime and centered upon certain types of deviance and mental health problems. Addressing …

She Must Be Crazy: Alternative Realities In Contemporary Francophone Literature, Emily Barclay Spriggs, Emily Barclay Spriggs Apr 2018

She Must Be Crazy: Alternative Realities In Contemporary Francophone Literature, Emily Barclay Spriggs, Emily Barclay Spriggs

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Globally and historically, madness appears as a prominent socio-medical concern that also occupies a significant space in literary tradition. There has been an increase in the number of scholars who study madness and literature in postcolonial works. However, the predominant view and treatment of madness – both socially and medically – adheres to the European, white male construct that has informed a more or less universal regard of those who suffer from mental woes: they are deranged, sick, ill. This poses a problem for postcolonial works when we consider the sexist and racist implications in psychology that were enhanced through …

Unterstützung Oder Dienstleistung: German Exchange Students’ Perceptions Of Student Support Services After Studying Abroad In The United States, Matthew Todd Dean Apr 2018

Unterstützung Oder Dienstleistung: German Exchange Students’ Perceptions Of Student Support Services After Studying Abroad In The United States, Matthew Todd Dean

LSU Master's Theses

As Germany seeks to compete in the international higher education market, German universities are rethinking their approach to the services provided to students. As predicted by the theory of academic capitalism, this competition is poised to force universities to consider student services as both a marketing tool and alternate stream of revenue. This study explores German students’ perceptions of student support services. Through qualitative interviews with German students who have studied abroad in the United States, the author examines their perceptions of the services offered to them by universities and third party affiliates. Emergent themes are illustrative of understaffing and …

The Medium Is The Movement: The Internet's Influence On Feminist Rhetorical Strategies, Christine Nicole Jeansonne Apr 2018

The Medium Is The Movement: The Internet's Influence On Feminist Rhetorical Strategies, Christine Nicole Jeansonne

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In The Medium Is the Movement: The Internet’s Influence on Feminist Rhetorical Strategies, I assert that recent scholarship on online feminism identifies feminist approaches to using the Internet as a tool to achieve activist causes but does not fully consider the active role of the Internet, itself, in changing feminist rhetoric. In response to this oversight, each of my chapters first attends to a popular critique of online feminism and then illuminates the digital framework’s influence in prompting distinct changes to feminist rhetorical practices. In Chapter I, entitled, “Hashtag ‘Slacktivism’: Posturing and Positioning in #OnlineFeminism,” I explore the productive …

Teaching College Writing To High School Students: A Mixed Methods Investigation Of Dual Enrollment Composition Students' Writing Curriculum And Writing Self-Efficacy, Erin Dena Scott-Stewart Mar 2018

Teaching College Writing To High School Students: A Mixed Methods Investigation Of Dual Enrollment Composition Students' Writing Curriculum And Writing Self-Efficacy, Erin Dena Scott-Stewart

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to use a quantitative survey to assess the relationships between the credit pathways students choose to earn first-year, first-semester (FYFS) university writing credit (i.e. dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, university courses, and ACT/SAT exemptions) and several writing experiences and outcomes, including writing curriculum, self-efficacy, self-regulatory strategy use, and course performance. The same survey was also used to explore relationships between these writing experiences and outcomes and preexisting student characteristics (i.e. race/ethnicity, gender, and parents’ education). For dual enrollment (DE) students only, the following aspects of the participants’ writing experiences were also investigated using …

Identifying Stress Variables Linking Socioeconomic Status And Smoking, Aaron French Waters Mar 2018

Identifying Stress Variables Linking Socioeconomic Status And Smoking, Aaron French Waters

LSU Master's Theses

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death accounting for approximately 480,000 deaths every year (Jamal et al., 2015). Across the socioeconomic status gradient smoking prevalence differs greatly, with those of lower socioeconomic status smoking at much higher rates. Within the literature relationships have been identified between socioeconomic status, stress variables, and smoking. However, little research has explored the possibility of stress variables mediating the relationship between socioeconomic status and smoking. The goal of the current study was to identify stress variables linking socioeconomic status and smoking in order to identify variables to address in cessation programs for …

Sanctum Drag Featuring St. Joseph As A Structural Vulnerability, Phillip Gregory Spotswood Mar 2018

Sanctum Drag Featuring St. Joseph As A Structural Vulnerability, Phillip Gregory Spotswood

LSU Master's Theses

Sanctum Drag is a hybrid work that gnaws at the boundaries of personal and public, performative and lived. Within, St. Joseph, as the patriarch of the Catholic Church, is dismantled through a series of elegies, maps, and plays. Throughout, the characters and speakers are auditioning and experimenting towards new means of reproduction, outside of the logic of heteronormativity and marriage. Like the various characters, the form of the text is always shifting, always searching its own edges. The mutating forms create a call-and-response, one form taking up where another form fails. Failure, then, becomes a crucial practice for the speakers …

History Of Journalism Education: An Analysis Of 100 Years Of Journalism Education, Hilary Akers Dunn Mar 2018

History Of Journalism Education: An Analysis Of 100 Years Of Journalism Education, Hilary Akers Dunn

LSU Master's Theses

This quantitative content analysis uses course descriptions to find changes in journalism education at the University of Missouri, Louisiana State University, and the University of North Carolina over 100 years. This study found that there are two influencing factors that are inherent to the journalism profession: advances in technology and the maturity of the profession itself. These two influencing factors produced changes in technology used in curriculum, course focus (e.g. skill, theory, general knowledge, and history), and course topics (e.g. advertising, broadcasting, public relations, etc.) This study also found that leadership is the most influential factor of change in journalism …

Unquenchable Enthusiasm For The American Way And American Life: Prescribing, Promoting, And Praising Conservative Values Of Japanese Americans During Internment, Kallie Nycole Credeur Mar 2018

Unquenchable Enthusiasm For The American Way And American Life: Prescribing, Promoting, And Praising Conservative Values Of Japanese Americans During Internment, Kallie Nycole Credeur

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis examines two Japanese American newspapers, the Heart Mountain Sentinel and the Rocky Shimpo, during World War II—specifically the period of Japanese Internment. This study examines articles from these two publications on topics including loyalty, patriotism, the war effort, resettlement, and race relations in order to illustrate that the Japanese American editorial staffs expressed their conservatism through these newspapers. Through these articles, the Japanese American newspaper staff promoted principle beliefs of conservative nationalism, economic conservatism, and social conservatism.

The Cost Of The Bridge Way: Identity Formation In No Excuses Charter Schools, Olivia Jackson Cox Mar 2018

The Cost Of The Bridge Way: Identity Formation In No Excuses Charter Schools, Olivia Jackson Cox

LSU Master's Theses

Media coverage and debate over education policy has fashioned in the minds of many Americans a basic fear that our public schools are failing. In the midst of this alarmist climate, a compelling solution has arisen: charter schools, which are publicly funded but often privately run. A particular brand of charter schools call themselves “no excuses schools:” they insist that every child can perform at high levels, regardless of poverty, race, or any other circumstance. While many studies and reports have investigated claims that student achievement is higher at charter schools than traditional public schools (Cunningham, 2012; Hoxby et al …

A Pedagogical Approach To The Waltzes And Tangos For Piano By Francisca Gonzaga, Ana Paula Machado Simoes Mar 2018

A Pedagogical Approach To The Waltzes And Tangos For Piano By Francisca Gonzaga, Ana Paula Machado Simoes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Francisca (Chiquinha) Gonzaga (1847–1935) was an important composer in the development of Brazilian music. She was also a remarkable female personality and broke paradigms in a society dominated by men. In spite of that, her works are not widely performed and studied yet. The goal of this dissertation is to provide a pedagogical approach to her works. This research explores her waltzes and tangos for piano, analyzes their musical, reading and technical difficulties, and provides a graded level for half of them to stimulate their use as repertoire for piano students and performers.

Chiquinha composed 37 waltzes and 30 tangos …

A Study Of The Lived Experience Of African American Males Who Transition From Out-Of-Home Care To Postsecondary Education, Marvin Cain Alexander Mar 2018

A Study Of The Lived Experience Of African American Males Who Transition From Out-Of-Home Care To Postsecondary Education, Marvin Cain Alexander

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While the literature is replete with studies of the factors contributing to the failure and social deviance of African American males, few qualitative studies have been conducted to determine the factors that support the success of African American males, and virtually none have focused on the transition of African American males from out-of-home care to postsecondary educational institutions. Despite the challenges faced preceding and during out-of-home care, African American males can transition to postsecondary educational institutions. There is a need to understand why some African American males who experience out-of-home care can accomplish this while others cannot. It is imperative …

Reasonable Exceptions: Supreme Court Rhetoric And The Right To Privacy, Lindsay Susan Head Mar 2018

Reasonable Exceptions: Supreme Court Rhetoric And The Right To Privacy, Lindsay Susan Head

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Reasonable Exceptions excavates and elaborates the rhetorical, contextual, and ideological underpinnings of the right to privacy. Originating in writing, as a single sentence drafted in 1791, the Fourth Amendment has been one of the most adaptable and unstable concepts in American culture. This project explores the fluctuating ways in which Americans have understood the rights it confers and connects to the ethics of rhetoric and writing practices in a variety of ways. It focus on three seminal Supreme Court opinions, examining their use of precedent and their strategic engagement with contemporaneous technological, social, and political changes: Katz v. United States …

Difficulties Using Standardized Tests To Identify The Receptive Expressive Gap In Bilingual Children's Vocabularies, Todd A. Gibson, Linda Jarmulowicz, D. Kimbrough Oller Mar 2018

Difficulties Using Standardized Tests To Identify The Receptive Expressive Gap In Bilingual Children's Vocabularies, Todd A. Gibson, Linda Jarmulowicz, D. Kimbrough Oller

Faculty Publications

Receptive standardized vocabulary scores have been found to be much higher than expressive standardized vocabulary scores in children with Spanish as L1, learning L2 (English) in school (Gibson et al., 2012). Here we present evidence suggesting the receptive-expressive gap may be harder to evaluate than previously thought. We compared the performance of 116 six-year-old Spanish-English bilingual children in the US to 30 monolingual Spanish-speaking peers in Mexico across two Spanish-language standardized picture naming tests and one standardized picture pointing test. The performance of 134 monolingual English-speaking peers was compared using similar English-language tests. Results revealed the presence and magnitude of …

Assessing Changes In Self-Reported Driving Ability After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, John Philip Kelly Bernstein Feb 2018

Assessing Changes In Self-Reported Driving Ability After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, John Philip Kelly Bernstein

LSU Master's Theses

The ability to safely drive a car requires intact cognitive functioning across a variety of domains, many of which are adversely affected following a moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) impacts similar cognitive facets, albeit to a less severe extent, and preliminary evidence suggests that mTBI may also have a deleterious effect on driving abilities immediately following injury. However, changes in driving ability over the course of recovery from mTBI have not been adequately examined. The present study addressed this dearth in the literature through examination of self-reported driving ability in 18 participants with a recent …

Extended Techniques For Intermediate Violin Students, Mariana Krewer Jan 2018

Extended Techniques For Intermediate Violin Students, Mariana Krewer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As we reach the end of the second decade of the 21st century, the performance of contemporary music is not a novelty in any concert hall. American orchestras frequently include contemporary works in their programs, and music schools offer specialized classes, ensembles, and even full degrees dedicated to contemporary music. However, for the violin, there are very few resources explaining extended techniques and other recent aesthetic innovations in a didactic manner. Most of the available material is directed at the advanced student or professional player. On the other hand, traditional instructional material often barely glosses over the 20th century repertoire, …

The Effects Of Accelerated Reader On 6th Grade At-Risk African American Males' Motivation As It Relates To Foucault's Power/Knowledge Theory, Theresa Williams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

THE EFFECTS OF ACCELERATED READER ON 6TH GRADE AT-RISK AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES' MOTIVATION RELATED TO FOUCAULT'S POWER/KNOWLEDGE THEORY.

This interpretive qualitative study explored the effectiveness of the computerized reading management software, Accelerated Reader, on a select group of at-risk sixth grade African American male students' motivation to read as it relates to Michele Foucault's power/knowledge theory. The data was collected from 16 Black adolescent male students and their four English language arts teachers. The study was guided by one overreaching research question, and four sub questions probed students' self perception, motivations, teachers' perceptions, and power knowledge relations and practices. …

Civic Longing: The Speculative Origins Of U.S. Citizenship, Johann N. Neem Jan 2018

Civic Longing: The Speculative Origins Of U.S. Citizenship, Johann N. Neem

Civil War Book Review

In the midst of the transnational turn in American letters and historiography, Carrie Hyde explores the nature of “civic longing,” in which real and imagined outsiders cultivated a desire to be part of the American nation. A work of literary criticism, Hyde argues that, prior to the 14th amendment, citizenship in the U.S. was defined through “culture” rather than law. “In the absence of a centralized legal definition of citizenship,” Hyde writes, questions of citizenship were explored through “political philosophy, Christian theology, natural law, literature, and didactic writing” (8).

Blood Moon: An American Epic Of War And Splendor In The Cherokee Nation, Jeff Fortney Jan 2018

Blood Moon: An American Epic Of War And Splendor In The Cherokee Nation, Jeff Fortney

Civil War Book Review

John Sedgwick’s Blood Moon is a troublesome and downright vexing account of the Cherokee Nation through first half of the nineteenth century. The book mostly focuses on the Cherokees through the era of Removal with a brief final section on the American Civil War. In a similar fashion to his acclaimed book War of Two: Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and the Duel that Shaped America, Sedgwick tells his story through the lens of two leading figures: Major Ridge (and later Stand Watie) and Principal Chief John Ross. While Major Ridge advocated negotiating favorable terms for Removal, Ross fought …
