A reliable procedure was developed to harvest purified populations of bovine uterine epithelial cells from the luminal endometrium that allowed cells to be maintained in vitro for multiple subpassages. This method allowed adequate numbers of cells for in vitro culture studies to evaluate uterine secretion rates, uterine-embryo interactions and a new embryo co-culture system. In a second study, cells were isolated from the uterus and oviducts collected from cattle on day of estrus, on d 4 to 6, d 8 to 10 and d 14 to 16 of the cycle to monitor growth and development following incubation in vitro. This study argues for a methodology that applies contemporary theories of literature and performance to a certain kind of performance script I call a seamless intertext. Working deductively from theory to dramatic text, I explore what selected portions of extant performance and textual theory have to offer in examining, describing, and explaining these seamless intertexts. Working inductively from dramatic text to theory, I extend and offer further clarification and an extension of current theory through a more detailed explanation of the scripting explicit in each dramatic text. Growth characteristics for fetal bovine uterine fibroblast cells (FBUFC) and frozen-thawed bovine (b) and caprine (g) trophoblastic vesicles (TV) were similar in (A) Ham's F-10 (HF-10), (B) MEM (with Earle's salts), (C) RPMI-1640 and (D) Menezo's B$\sb2$ (B$\sb2$), each supplemented with 10% FCS and Ab-Am (Experiment (Exp) I). Cell numbers declined initially but increased linearly thereafter for 5 days. The bTV and gTV that survived freezing had similar viability across time and Treatments (Trt). Exp II compared the (A) bTV, (B) FBUFC monolayer and (C) bTV-monolayer co-culture systems to (D) HF-10 alone for culture of 8- to 32-cell bovine embryos. …

An Evaluation Of Multiple Aspects Of Asthmatic Functioning: Stress Responders Versus Stress Nonresponders., Anthony Joseph Goreczny

The purpose of this study was to differentiate between asthmatics whose daily symptoms are related to daily stress level (stress responders) and those whose symptoms have no apparent relation to stress (stress nonresponders) and to indentify differences between the two groups. Using correlational procedures, 15 stress responders and 19 stress nonresponders were identified and compared along various dimensions. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and covariance (MANCOVA) procedures revealed no significant differences between the two groups with respect to affective/emotional responding, clinical symptomatology, or cognitions about illness and asthma. This study examines the contemporary discourses of journalism and pedagogy from the standpoint of critical theory to assess the impact of technocratic rationality and instrumental logic on the practices of communication and education. It is premised on the observation that, spurred by the imperatives of trans-national capital accumulation, privatization inimical to democratic interests has begun to colonize public education. The study represents an effort to reactivate a concept and rhetoric of "social responsibility" that would animate a project of reclaiming cultural space to be occupied by a "public sphere," in a struggle analagous to that waged against feudalism and monarchical …

In Experiment I, 125 two-pronuclear murine ova were cultured in either Ham's F-10 plus l5% human serum (HF-10h), on a monolayer of human uterine fibroblasts (HUC) or fetal bovine uterine fibroblasts (FBUC). After 96 hours in culture, 2.4% embryos in HF-10h were viable compared with 45.2% and 61% for embryos on HUC and FBUC, respectively. Results suggest that monolayers were advantageous to medium alone for culturing murine embryos. Experiment II was conducted to assess the development of 117 bovine embryos in HF-10 (Treatment A), on a monolayer of FBUC (Treatment B) or hormone-pretreated FBUC (Treatment C). A nonlinear multireaction model was used to describe kinetic retention data sets for chromate, phosphate, arsenate, borate, fluoride, molybdate, selenite, and silicate by goethite, an iron oxide mineral, and selected soils. These data sets were obtained from laboratory batch experiments with time up to 24 h. Either a three-parameter version of the model consisting of one nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reaction, or a five-parameter version consisting of two nonlinear reversible and one first order irreversible reactions was capable of predicting anion sorption by goethite. A mechanistic model consistent with the nonlinear multireaction approach was also proposed in …

In this study, the researcher investigated visual arts teacher preparation programs at universities in Louisiana with particular emphasis on the curriculum component. The research was designed to survey teacher training programs and to compare the findings with delineated National Art Education Association standards. This study included only public institutions of higher education in Louisiana with visual arts education teacher preparation programs. The researcher conducted interviews at each of the 13 universities. Two of the universities worked together in a joint art education program. An interview guide was prepared and used to facilitate the interviewing process. Records and documents were also …

Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts

The relationship between proton motive force and the secretion of the enzyme dextransucrase (E.C. 2.4.1.5) in Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated. The transmembrane pH gradient was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled benzoate or methylamine while the membrane potential was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled tetraphenylphosphonium bromide. Leuconostoc mesenteroides was able to maintain a constant proton motive force of $-130$ mV when grown in fermenters at constant pH while a value of $-140$ mV was determined from concentrated cell suspensions. Research was conducted to develop methods for improving rice through somaclonal variation using plant tissue culture techniques. Experiments were directed toward developing an efficient culture system by which plants could be efficiently regenerated in rice somaculture. Histological studies of the process of callus formation and plant regeneration were also carried out. Explant sources evaluated for their potential for callus induction and plant regeneration included seedling mesocotyl, root-tips, embryos from mature seeds, nodes, immature panicles, and mature panicles. Immature panicles gave the best callus induction and plant regeneration. It was determined that it was necessary to add 2,4-D to the medium …

The purpose of this study was to investigate interpersonal influence as an explanatory variable in husband-wife decision making. Self-report and observational measures of influence were compared, and the decision interaction process was also examined to detect characteristic patterns of influence. Sixty married couples were interviewed in their homes, and the entire interview was tape recorded. Couples were screened regarding purchases that they had recently made or were considering, for the purpose of identifying two product decisions that they considered (1) important, (2) salient, and (3) a source of disagreement. Cells of the dimorphic Zygomycetous fungus Mucor racemosus were grown in both batch and continuous culture in order to study the regulation of RNA and protein synthesis as a function of (i) growth rate, (ii) morphogenesis and (iii) nutritional shift-up. In all three cases cells were analyzed for parameters used to calculate (i) cellular ribosome concentration, (ii) percentage of ribosomes active in protein synthesis and (iii) polypeptide chain elongation rate. The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes toward the disabled in foreign students at Louisiana State University. Four hundred sixty-six students were administered the Attitude Toward Disabled People scale, Form A, and a demographic questionnaire, during the Fall semester of 1982. These students were grouped in five predetermined areas of the world, as follows: Latin America; Africa; the Middle East, except Israel; Europe, Canada, and Israel; and South and East Asia. Two different greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sources and levels of Ca on the growth, yield and mineral contents of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Keystone Resistant Giant #4' grown on Cahaba silt loam. The CaCO(,3) produced plants that had significantly better growth, greater yield and higher nutrient uptake than did the control plants during the spring, summer and fall tests. Quality of growth, earliness of flowering and fruit development were better during the fall plantings for all treatments. The Ca(NO(,3))(,2) favored more vegetative growth on short internodes during the summer planting. Although a general …

Six serial passages of a cell-adapted strain of EIAV were conducted in Shetland ponies. The 16 recipient ponies became agar-gel immunodiffusion test positive by 25 days after inoculation, and it was observed that the virulence of this cell-adapted strain increased through the successive passages. Clinical signs were closely monitored and recorded, and macroscopic as well as microscopic lesions of EIA were also recorded and evaluated. The effect of EIAV upon blood components was determined after several of the febrile episodes, and the effect of the immunosuppressant dexamethasone on infected ponies were also studied. This study is a history of New Deal archaeology in the Southeastern United States from the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) archaeological projects in the winter of 1933-1934 to the end of federal relief archaeology in 1942. The federal government selected archaeology as one of its relief programs to put to work some of the many unemployed Americans during the depression of the 1930s. This study focuses on the large Works Progress Administration (WPA) archaeological programs in Louisiana and Kentucky, the combined WPA and TVA programs in Alabama and Tennessee, and the WPA and National …

A subcutaneous extraskeletal giant cell tumor (malignant fibrous histiocytoma) was excised repeatedly from a 9-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat. Ultrastructurally, the mass was composed of fibroblast-like, histiocyte-like, and multinucleated giant cells, and some undifferentiated cells and mononuclear cells intermediate between the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. Fibroblast-like cells were characterized by abundant well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum, relatively smooth cytoplasmic membranes, few lysosomal structures, and finely granular chromatin. Histiocyte-like cells resembled immature macrophages. The cell membranes had many villous projections. Rough endoplasmic reticulum varied in quantity. Lysosomes were numerous. Multinucleated giant cells had characteristics of both the fibroblast-like and histiocyte-like cells. No viral …

The values, attitudes, and beliefs which humans hold regarding mankind's role in the universe must be understood if the natural environment is to be preserved. In this study, the utility of the construct "anthropocentrism" as an organizing principle for understanding consistencies among individuals' attitudes regarding man's role in nature was explored. Anthropocentrism was defined as a doctrine which posits humanity as the center of the universe and sees the well being of mankind as the ultimate purpose of things. Anaerobic digestion of an alkaline food waste for methane production was investigated. The waste generated by potato processing contained significant quantities of carbohydrate degradation products and sodium carbonate. Anaerobic digestion was determined to be a reliable process for waste treatment and methane production. The high sodium levels did not inhibit anaerobic digestion at a substrate concentration of 1.0 wt % alkaline peel solids. Single and two-stage (separate acid, methane stages) anaerobic digestion systems were studied. In two-stage bench-scale studies at 37(DEGREES)C, methane production averaged 0.28 m('3)/kg COD feed or 0.65 m('3)/(m('3)(.)d) in a settled bacterial sludge methane fermenter with a …

The purposes of this study were (a) to carry out a factor analysis of the Spanish translation of the Children's Behavioral Classification Project questionnaire on data obtained from Venezuela, and (b) to compare the result with that of parallel data obtained in the United States with the original English version of the same questionnaire. The Children's Behavioral Classification Project questionnaire is an instrument designed to be administered to parents of children 6-13 years old for the purpose of contributing information about the child's outward behavior useful in understanding the psychological, physical, or conduct problems which the child might display. Experiments have been conducted to determine the feasibility of the bioconversion of cellulose into Single Cell Protein (SCP) using a thermotolerant, cellulolytic strain of Aspergillus terreus. Crude cellulases produced during the growth of fungal biomass were tested for their ability to generate glucose syrups by enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. Studies on continuous cultivation of glucose-limited A. terreus resulted in the development of a highly optimized medium which allowed the organism to achieve similar maximum specific growth rates (umax) measured in batch culture. Naturally Occurring Sendai Virus Infection Of Athymic Nude Mice, J. M. Ward, D. P. Houchens, M. J. Collins, D. M. Young, R. L. Reagan

Nude (nu/nu) mice, Balb/c derived, responded to a naturally occurring Sendai virus infection in a different manner than conventional mice. They developed a chronic debilitating disease and a persistent viral infection of the respiratory tract with intranuclear inclusion bodies in tracheal, bronchial and bronchiolar epithelial cells, laryngeal and tracheal glandular epithelium and in type I and II alveolar cells. The infection was identified by serologic and tissue culture studies, the mouse antibody production test and ultrastructural examination of pulmonary lesions. Phlebitis of pulmonary veins, suppurative rhinitis and otitis media accompanied the viral infection while some mice developed a secondary bronchopneumonia.
