The present investigation, which included two studies, consisted of a cross-cultural analysis of achievement goals and self-perceptions of ability in physical education from a goal perspective theory approach. One hundred and eighty Chinese students and 121 Anglo-American students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades participated in Study 1 and completed questionnaires assessing their goal orientations, perceived ability, task choice, and satisfaction in physical education. Three hundred and seventy-one Chinese students and 308 American students in fourth, eighth, and eleventh grades participated in Study 2. Since the 1970s, there has been an ongoing debate within the humanities regarding the canon and curricular reform. Moving beyond questions of advocacy and the dichotomy of center and periphery (without diminishing the necessity of these), Border Crossers and Coyotes: A Reception Study of Latin American and Latina/o Literatures surveys the various ways which marginalized texts enter U.S. academic discourse as well as analyzing the conflicts inherent in these border crossings. This research deals with the dynamic ethnic socio-spatial relations and the transformation of ethnic identities in the early-twentieth-century Honolulu, mainly focusing on the Korean community. Against the widely spread notion that the ethnic relations of Honolulu in those days were little associated with the racist ideology which was prevalent in the contemporary mainland cities, this research shows that white-supremacy ideology had exerted strong influence on the minority groups in Honolulu all the way through their immigration and settling-down process. To improve the efficiency of the culture system for bovine in vitro fertilization (IVF), several factors affecting the success of in vitro maturation (IVM), IVF and in vitro culture (IVC) of bovine oocytes were studied. A simple and efficient procedure has been developed for IVM/IVF/IVC of bovine follicular oocytes, which consistently produced 45 to 50% morulae and blastocysts during the treatment of over 6,000 oocytes. Ovary holding temperatures of $\rm 0\sp\circ C,\ 18\sp\circ C\ and\ 25\sp\circ C$ were found to affect the rate of maturation, fertilization and cleavage (P $<$ 0.05). When ovaries were held at 25$\sp\circ$C for 3 h, 20% of the oocytes developed to blastocysts and hatched in vitro, indicating that this temperature is suitable for holding ovaries during transportation. The highest cleavage rate (79%) was obtained when oocytes were matured and fertilized both at 39$\sp\circ$C in 5% CO$\sb2$. Fertilization rate was impaired with a lowered incubation temperature (37$\sp\circ$C) and CO$\sb2$ level (2.5%). Cumulus cells were shown to be important and necessary for IVM and acquisition of competence for full embryonic development. Cumulus cell removal before IVM, before IVF or 7 h after IVF reduced the rates of maturation, fertilization and development at all embryo stages evaluated (P $<$.05). Cumulus cell removal at 20 h after fertilization resulted in a rate of development similar to control embryos (P $>$.05). Co-culture enhanced the development of IVF-derived embryos. More embryos …

Circadian variations of $\sp{14}$C-glycine incorporation into protein and the responsiveness of muscle tissue to growth hormone, prolactin and insulin-like growth factor-I were examined in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis. Incorporation of label during a 5 h period following $\sp{14}$C-glycine injection was tested at different times of day (LD 12:12). Incorporation varied during the day in all the tissues examined (scale, muscle, liver and intestine). The times of peak incorporations differed among the tissues. Scales showed peak incorporation during the dark hours. Peak incorporation by muscle occurred at the onset of light. These patterns were similar in male and female fish. The …

Performing The Community, Telling The Self: Storytelling By Members Of A Group Home For Men With Mental Retardation., Sharon Elizabeth Croft

This study uses an ethnographic approach to examine the stories told by members of a group home for men with mental retardation. The author contends that the culture of the group home works to constrain how group home members interact within this community. The author argues, however, that despite the cultural constraints, the men use storytelling to establish their individuality, even though the stories themselves, in their content and in the performance of their telling, often reify cultural constraints and their cultural constructions. Building upon the scholarly tradition that performance is a valuable pedagogical tool, I documented how six performers developed personal awareness, critical consciousness, and the ability to take action as a result of participating in a performance process. I designed a three-stage performance process. During the first phase of the process, focus group discussions, participants exhibited little awareness of their specific eating habits or the cultural constructedness of those habits. As they completed the first phase, they became more aware of their behaviors, and they began to identify food's social function. At the second stage, rehearsal sessions, six performers began to …

My dissertation, Cauldron of Changes: Feminist Spirituality in Contemporary American Women's Fiction, combines feminist perspectives from literary and religious thinkers to inform a discussion of the overlooked aspects of contemporary European-American women's speculative fiction. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the feminist spirituality movement as it incorporates Goddess- and earth-centered religious perspectives, and covers the themes common to both spiritual practice and fiction. "Rewriting History and Legend," the second chapter, shows how the feminist spirituality movement has furthered the feminist project of rewriting myth, legend, and history, thus challenging the foundations of the cultural tradition of the West. This dissertation is a fantasy theme analysis of the organizational communication culture of the Louisiana State Police. This study interprets the rhetorical function of the organizational sagas of State Police. State Police has a distinct history aligned with Louisiana Politics. In 1937, General Louis F. Guerre, the first superintendent, envisioned a new State Police, immune from political pressures, "soldiers of the law in the first line of defense for society." The symbolic persona of LSP has survived through fifty-six years of politics and policing as the state's ranking law enforcement agency. In the second quarter of the nineteenth century, weekly and monthly periodicals emerged as the primary forum for new American literature. In several respects periodicals reflected the multiplicity of rapidly growing Eastern cities: they assembled a variety of "voices" in single texts and maintained a dialogue between editors and readers. At the same time, the magazines sought to "create" a more homogenous middle-class audience that would equate the capitalist transformation of American society with the "natural" progress of democracy. Immunological And Developmental Factors Affecting The Efficacy Of In Vitro Fertilization, Embryo Culture And Embryo Transfer In The Domestic Cat., William Frederick Swanson

Developmental and immunological factors affecting the efficacy of assisted reproduction for domestic and endangered nondomestic felid species were investigated. In the first study, domestic cats exhibited decreased (P $<$ 0.05) numbers of follicles and maturity of oocytes following repeated treatments, at short intervals (44-50 days), with a combination regimen of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Queens had elevated titers of eCG/hCG-binding immunoglobulins compared with male cats and naive queens, and these immunoglobulins attenuated eCG and hCG bioactivity in mouse ovarian stimulation assays. However, refractory queens appeared to cycle naturally and were responsive to an alternative exogenous gonadotropin, porcine follicle stimulating hormone (pFSH). In the second study, queens exhibited individual variability in immune responses to eCG and hCG, and this variability affected (P $$ 0.05) when longer intervals (130-135 days) were used between successive eCG/hCG treatments. In the third study, the effects of eCG and hCG on the suitability of the maternal environment were investigated. Following intramuscular injection, eCG had an elimination half-life of 24 to 48 hours and, 5 and 15 days after follicular aspiration, eCG/hCG-treated queens had formed multiple ancillary follicles and secondary corpora lutea (CL), respectively. Treatment with antisera against eCG/hCG slowed (P $$ 0.05) serum progesterone levels or decrease (P $>$ 0.05) the number of secondary ovarian structures. In the fourth study, developmental requirements of IVF-derived cat embryos were examined, with the emphasis on energy sources, media complexity and tissue co-culture and temporal variations in these factors. Embryos developed equally well (P $>$ 0.05) to morulae in simple media containing either glucose or glutamine, but blastocyst formation and embryo cell number were decreased (P $<$ 0.05) when glucose was present during the early culture period. Co-culture of embryos on oviductal cell monolayers decreased (P $<$ 0.05) fertilization and blastocyst formation. In the final study, a transcervical technique for embryo transfer was developed and used successfully to produce viable offspring in the domestic cat.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of post-block mouse and bovine embryos on the development of pre-block embryos around the in vitro developmental block stage. The effect of the post-block embryos on the development of the pre-block embryos was evaluated in culture, in chimeras and in cytoplasmic hybrid embryos. The results indicate that post-block embryos were able to stimulate the development of the pre-block embryos in culture. This study was conducted to: (1) determine the effects of stocking density and dietary protein:energy ratio on survival, growth, feed consumption, feed conversion, lipo-somatic index, dress-out percentage, and productive protein value of common snapping turtles; and (2) determine the fatty acid composition of muscle, liver, and fat bodies of wild common snapping turtles and common snapping turtles fed a diet of known fatty acid composition. Hatchling common snapping turtles, Chelydra serpentina, were stocked at five or 10 animals per container (29 and 58 turtles/m$\sp2$, respectively), and fed one of seven prepared diets. The tetrazolium salt sodium 3'-{1-[(phenylamino)-carbonyl]-3,4- tetrazolium}-bis (4-methoxy-6-nitro)benzene-sulfonic acid hydrate (XTT) was examined for use as a colorimetric indicator of viability in respiring bacteria. XTT was reduced to an orange, water-soluble formazan product by Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b, Pseudomonas putida, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis. Formazan production was proportional to live cell biomass, and XTT was reduced by all cultures in the absence of added electron-coupling agents. XTT reduction by M. trichosporium OB3b was linear over several hours and was stimulated by the presence of an exogenous substrate (methanol). Addition of cyanide to cultures incubated under oxic conditions gave an initial 10-fold …

Although cognitive theories suggest that attentional bias to illness stimuli and inflation of subjective risk of future negative health events are etiologically related to hypochondriacal concern, little empirical research has been conducted on these cognitive distortions. The present study investigated attentional bias, as inferred from RTs on an attentional search information processing paradigm, and subjective risk, as measured by probability judgments of future health events, in 200 medical outpatients differing in level of hypochondriacal concern. In addition, proteins secreted by oviductal cells isolated between d 4 and 6 or d 14 and 16 of the cycle were monitored. Although some of the most recent work in the field of multicultural education has acknowledged and begun to theorize about what has been called the new cultural politics of difference, problems concerning the very notions of marginality, boundaries, and their accompanying "essentialist" thought remain undertheorized. Previous researchers have reported the isolation of a diphenylether cleaving organism, Erwinia sp., using an enrichment medium containing lignin. A copper and dinitrophenol resistant mutant of this organism, Erwinia sp. Cu3614, has also been reported. To assess the effect of copper on the growth and biochemistry of this organism, continuous cultivation was used employing an apparently optimized medium containing ethanol as carbon source. Upon increasing the concentration of copper sulfate in the medium from 5 $\mu$g/ml to 10 $\mu$g/ml increases in maximum specific growth rate and growth yield were seen. This study examines the ways in which kindergartners from more and less developmentally appropriate classrooms negotiate the process of graphic communication. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of this process are examined. Eighty-one kindergarten children from four classrooms were asked to tell a story both verbally and graphically. They were encouraged to include drawing, writing, or both on their paper. Then they were asked to tell the story that they had produced graphically. The method applies and sometimes extends largely accepted theoretical statements on literary form. This synthesis provides an accessible, if at times complex, schema for organizing types, genres, and postmodern products based on image production and forms of spatial/temporal discourse. The objective of this experiment was to compare in vitro development of bovine embryos obtained from superovulation and in vitro fertilization (IVF) in two unique monolayer co-culture systems, bovine fetal spleen cell monolayers (BFS) and chick embryo fibroblast monolayers (CEF). To test the possible harmful effects of these co-culture systems, 225 murine morula-stage embryos were cultured for 72 hours with these monolayers. The percentage of hatched embryos was 62.7% in culture medium alone, 76% in BFS and 57.3% in CEF. BFS and CEF did not induce any detectable harmful effect on these developing murine embryos. Historically African-Americans have been marginalized and subordinated in critical discourse and research in curriculum studies and educational media. There is a vital need for research directed toward African-Americans as subjects and viewers of media used in school curricula. Cultural theorists in curriculum and educational media studies are interested in knowing how social, political and ideological messages are produced and circulated in society, and how student audiences use them to make sense of their experiences. Environmental Factors And Production Characteristics Affecting The Culture Of Red Drum, Sciaenops Ocellatus., Rowland Glenn Thomas

Experiments with red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, were conducted to assess environmental requirements and culture characteristics. Pond trials were used to evaluate the effects of salinity, chloride source, predator control, acclimation procedure, stocking density, and size at stocking on production. Survival in individual ponds ranged from 0-92%; average daily weight gain from 0.46-2.22g; and feed conversion ratio from 2.30-4.90. Survival, growth, and feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly between equivalent treatments in saltwater and freshwater ponds. The minimum chloride concentration necessary for acceptable production of red drum in freshwater ponds (250-300 mg/l) was at least 100% higher than the concentrations …

In the 1930s, the federal writers of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) plowed fertile new ground in American cultural scholarship. The writers were for the most part not professionals but white collar workers who had been dramatically rescued from unemployment by this government relief project. Like other New Deal relief agencies, the Writers' Project had been created more to make work than to do work. But by the end of the program, it had charted a nation and documented American life more comprehensively than any earlier effort had done. This study examines the rhetorical functions of a community ritual, the blessing of the shrimp fleet at Chauvin, Louisiana. Chauvin is a Cajun community in south Louisiana. Their annual fleet blessing was instituted in the 1930's and continues today relatively unchanged. The author observed the preparations and performance of the blessing and boat parade and also interviewed community members about the blessing. The observations and interview transcriptions are the primary data used for analysis of the community discourse. Fantasy theme analysis is used to demonstrate the community's use of discourse to develop and maintain group hierarchy. The discourse reveals six …

Three children's responses to three research-composed narratives were investigated. Participants were eight-year-old girls from the lower S.E.S., African-American culture. Study focuses on the composing processes used to write three children's stories and the responses of children to the stories. The author's intended meaning was compared with the children's construction of meaning. After each story was read aloud, response was elicited by each participant retelling the story and answering open-ended interview questions. One week later the participant was asked to retell the story a second time to determine changes in concept of story. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory methodology. …
