Factors Influencing Conceptual Change In Evolution: A Longitudinal, Multicase Study., Sherry Southerland Demastes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A high school Biology II classroom was observed daily in order to study students' conceptual change in evolution of life. The conceptual frameworks of four student participants were documented and the patterns of conceptual change were studied closely throughout the full school year. Data collected included open-ended and structured individual interviews, student journals, daily classroom observations, field notes, and pre-and posttests. All 68 student interviews (17 per student) were recorded, transcribed, coded, and sorted to find patterns of conceptual change. Additional interviews were conducted with the teacher, parents, principal, and high school counselor. The researchers' interpretations were shared with the …

Modeling Of Vdt Workstation System Risk Factors., Hongzheng Lu Jan 1994

Modeling Of Vdt Workstation System Risk Factors., Hongzheng Lu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objectives of this research were to determine the most important risk factors in VDT workstations associated with physical symptoms and to investigate the interrelationship among these risk factors. A conceptual model was first developed to describe the interrelationship among the basic components in a VDT workstation system and their possible health effects. A research model was then proposed to describe the hypothesized relationships among the following categories of variables: demographic, task, workstation design, work environment, psychosocial factors, work posture, psychological stress, musculoskeletal symptoms, visual symptoms, and general physical symptoms. A method which consisted of a questionnaire, measurement and posture …

The Legacy Of America's "Forgotten Warriors:" An Analysis Of Dysfunctional Relational Communication Among Vietnam Combat Veterans Exhibiting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology., Jack Eugene Rogers Jan 1994

The Legacy Of America's "Forgotten Warriors:" An Analysis Of Dysfunctional Relational Communication Among Vietnam Combat Veterans Exhibiting Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology., Jack Eugene Rogers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The literature has long reported the atypical stress-producing characteristics of the Vietnam conflict. For veterans still suffering from the psychological and emotional "fall-out" of war-related anxiety, one long-term adjustment dysfunction is the difficulty PTSD-positive veterans experience in sustaining successful interpersonal relationships. Competent dyadic communication plays a critical role in engendering positive relational trajectories. This study investigated the hypothesis that posttraumatic stress disorder would exhibit a correlational relationship with the relational communication topoi of intimacy and dominance/control. A cross-regional sample of 218 PTSD-positive veterans and their relational partners provided data. Scale construction and validation was achieved through orthogonal factor analysis with …

Enhancing Discourse Fluency By Increasing Work Selection Proficiency In School-Age Children With Language Learning Disorders., Lillian Nielsen Stiegler Jan 1994

Enhancing Discourse Fluency By Increasing Work Selection Proficiency In School-Age Children With Language Learning Disorders., Lillian Nielsen Stiegler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is growing clinical and research interest in the area of children's "word finding" difficulties, but treatment efficacy data are sparse. Previous treatments have been concerned with training students with language-learning disorders (LLD) to retrieve pre-selected, concrete nouns. Recommended intervention strategies have included retrieval exercises and activities focused on improving students' elaborative knowledge of training exemplars. The current study presents and evaluates a discourse-based, contextual intervention strategy for increasing word selection proficiency and discourse fluency. Three nine year old boys with diagnosed language-learning disorders participated in three discourse tasks: picture-elicited narratives, story-retelling, and conversation. During treatment, the experimenter identified problematic …

Political Songsters For The Presidential Campaign Of 1860., Cheryl T. Taranto Jan 1994

Political Songsters For The Presidential Campaign Of 1860., Cheryl T. Taranto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Songsters, collections of song texts usually containing no music, proliferated in the nineteenth century for various purposes. They provided a quick and inexpensive means of disseminating popular song texts, not only for pure musical entertainment, but also for political purposes, such as temperance, abolition, and campaigns for national office. This study explores how texts contained in 1860 presidential campaign songsters were used as a means of getting political messages across, the popular tunes of the time that were used as vehicles for the lyrics, and the role of songsters in the activities leading up to the election. Songsters were produced …

The Rhetoric Of Self-Fashioning In The Works Of Anna Cora Mowatt., Kelly Shaver Taylor Jan 1994

The Rhetoric Of Self-Fashioning In The Works Of Anna Cora Mowatt., Kelly Shaver Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Anna Cora Mowatt, the subject of this study, was a nineteenth century American author, actress, playwright, novelist, and poet. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rhetoric of surviving artifacts of Mowatt's life in order to explore the ways in which Mowatt created a public self through these works. Mowatt's nonfictional Autobiography of an Actress, her novel Mimic Life, her experience with mesmerism, her comedy Fashion, and her poem "My Life" are examined in depth along with the context of each creation within contemporary Victorian society. The course of Mowatt's self-fashioning was not smooth. She did not choose …

"A Proper Little Lady" And Other Twisted Tales Of Adolescent Femininity., Natalie Guice Adams Jan 1994

"A Proper Little Lady" And Other Twisted Tales Of Adolescent Femininity., Natalie Guice Adams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to explore the stories told by four adolescent females about how they construct a gendered identity amidst the conflicting and contradictory expectations of them as adolescents and as females. After situating the study within a feminist poststructuralist framework, the dominant cultural scripts that have dictated what constitutes normative adolescent and feminine behavior are examined. Of particular importance to this study is the way in which these dominant discourses of femininity and adolescence are manifested in the middle school that the participants attend, especially in the school's attempt to mold its female students into …

A Comparative Study Of The Oral Language Of Students In Basal-Based And Whole Language Kindergartens., Joan H. Lucille Benedict Jan 1994

A Comparative Study Of The Oral Language Of Students In Basal-Based And Whole Language Kindergartens., Joan H. Lucille Benedict

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Concern has existed for several years over the classroom practices relating to the "whole language" approach as opposed to the "basal-based" approach relative to literacy development, especially with respect to the appropriateness of each method for use with minority and lower socioeconomic groups of children entering kindergarten. This study describes the oral language of both African American and European American kindergarten children from low and middle socioeconomic status families who are attending public school kindergartens, one using whole language and one a basal-based approach. The language during centertime of seventeen children from these two classrooms was audiotaped using wireless microphones …

Nitric Oxide Toxicity Mediated By Peroxynitrite., Xia Jin Jan 1994

Nitric Oxide Toxicity Mediated By Peroxynitrite., Xia Jin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The reaction of nitric oxide (NO) with superoxide forms peroxynitrite, an extremely potent oxidant. Peroxynitrite can be synthesized by the ozonation of the azide ion. This preparation of peroxynitrite is essentially free of hydrogen peroxide and does not contain excess alkali. Peroxynitrites synthesized by independent methods contain very different impurities, but give the same results toward the oxidation of methionine (Met), dimethylsulfoxide, and the nitration of phenols. The oxidations of Met and its analog, 2-keto-4-thiomethylbutanoic acid (KTBA), by peroxynitrite proceed by two competing mechanisms. The first is a non-radical, bimolecular reaction yielding methionine sulfoxide (MetS=O). In the second mechanism, methionine …

Effect Of Processing On Protein And Carotenoids In Weaning Food Formulated From Sweetpotatoes, Or Apios Americana., Michael Andrew Ameny

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

White flesh sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) are a major food crop in developing countries. This study was to evaluate the protein and carotenoid content and quality of various white fleshed African sweetpotatoes and Apios americana tubers for use as a weaning food. The sweetpotato and Apios are not normally considered sources of carotenoids and proteins, but the wide use of sweetpotatoes as a source of carbohydrate and the renewed interest in Apios warrant the study of carotenoids and proteins in these crops. Total carotenoids ranged from 0$\mu{\rm g}$/100g to 260$\mu$g/100g (fresh weight basis) for sweetpotatoes. Apios total carotenoids ranged …

Faculty Publications

Natural radiative lifetimes of the states in the highly perturbed 5d10np 2P sequence in neutral gold, Au i, for n=69, as well as of four of the perturbing 5d96s6p 2P states, have been measured. This was done by direct excitation from the ground state with short-pulse vacuum-ultraviolet laser light and time-resolved detection of the laser-induced fluorescence. We found the lifetimes to be (6p 2P1/2)=6.2(2) ns, (6p 2P3/2)=4.7(2) ns, (7p 2P1/2)=6.4(7) ns, (7p 2P3/2)=5.3(7) ns, (8p 2P1/2)=63(3) ns, (8p 2P3/2)=24(2) ns, (9p 2P1/2)=28(2) ns, and (9p 2P3/2)=75(4) ns. For the perturbing states (two states of each term have been observed) we …

A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr Jan 1994

A Description And Comparison Of Variables That Influence Recidivism Of Selected Juveniles., Martin P. Carr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nationally, over $1.6 billion is spent incarcerating juveniles. Prevention, rather than correction is needed to reduce these costs. The cost in human lives exceeds the 56,000 incarcerated juveniles. It touches more than those who commit the offense. Victims, families of victims and families of the convicted juvenile also pay a price to one degree or another. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe variables which may impact recidivism rates of selected juveniles who were charged and have arrest records on file. The research was based upon East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, juvenile arrest files from 1981 through …

The objective was to evaluate bull differences in chromosomal and spermatozoal areas related to the occurrence of the bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Lymphocyte chromosomes from 30 Holstein bulls and 2 Holstein heifers were measured using image analysis and computer-enhanced video-microscopy. Spermatozoal head areas from 29 of the 30 bulls were measured. Autosomal rank was based on decreasing area. Average total autosomal areas were not the same across bulls. One group of bulls had significantly smaller average chromosomal areas than the others; this group carried bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome. Area measures of spermatozoal heads showed that bulls with bovine …

File Allocation And Join Site Selection Problem In Distributed Database Systems., Pil Kyo Seo Jan 1994

File Allocation And Join Site Selection Problem In Distributed Database Systems., Pil Kyo Seo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There are two important problems associated with the design of distributed database systems. One is the file allocation problem, and the other is the query optimization problem. In this research a methodology that considers both these aspects is developed that determines the optimal location of files and join sites for given queries simultaneously. Using this methodology, three different mixed integer programming models that describe three cases of the file allocation and join site selection problem are developed. Dual-based procedures are developed for each of the three mixed integer programming models. Extensive computational testing is performed which shows that the dual-based …

Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield Jan 1994

Eric Voegelin's Mystical Epistemology And Its Influence On Ethics And Politics., Charles Warren Burchfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine and analyze Eric Voegelin's theory of knowledge, and to see what implications it has on his theories of ethics and politics. The profundity of Voegelin's epistemological search and recovery is apparent when placed in the context of his disillusionment with and resistance to the dominant epistemology of his day, namely, positivism. Through a recovery and restoration of the symbolizations of classical and Christian philosophy, Voegelin searches for and finds experiential knowledge which is gained through faith in search of understanding (fides quaerens intellectum), which brings about a vision of the whole …

A wide range in virulence of isolates of C. crotalariae was observed, and soybean isolates were more virulent on soybean than were peanut isolates. Virulence …

The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz Jan 1994

The Dimensionality Of Factors Underlying Satisfaction With Continuing Care Retirement Communities., Aimee Desobry Prawitz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose was to develop and test a model to predict satisfaction with consumer selection of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). The family resource management conceptual framework of Deacon and Firebaugh (1988) provided the theoretical base for development of the proposed model. Another area of study, consumer behavior, was drawn upon to find pertinent indicators for the decision-making component of the model. Constructs of the Engel, Blackwell and Miniard (1990) consumer behavior model were incorporated to represent the managerial aspect of the family resource management model. The model was tested by applying it to the CCRC selection process of consumers. …

Effects Of Dietary Boron In Rats Fed A Vitamin D-Deficient Diet, J. N. Dupre, M. J. Keenan, M. Hegsted, A. M. Brudevold

Faculty Publications

Although boron has long been known to be a required nutrient for plants, it was not until recently that there was any suggestion of a nutritional requirement for animals and humans. Addition of boron to the diet of vitamin D-deficient chicks indicated that boron may play a role in animal nutrition. Studies with rats have demonstrated that supplemental dietary boron has most marked effects when the diet is deficient in known nutrients. We observed higher apparent-balance values of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus for rats fed a vitamin D-deprived diet with dietary supplemental boron (2.72 ppm), than for rats fed the …

Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis Jan 1994

Murderous Historian: Henry Adams, Modernity, And The Problem Of Subjectivity. (Volumes I And Ii)., Martha Moseley Regalis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study traces Henry Adams's evolution from an enlightenment historian to a prescient postmodern theorist, and explores how he came to regard his own intellectual history as paradigmatic of the arc of subjectivity in the West from the Middle Ages to Nietzsche and Bergson. Adams was a self-conscious philosophical nominalist, and he believed that his radical doubts about the capacity of language for embodying meaning had their origin in medieval nominalism. Adams found the seeds of modernity and the problem of subjectivity which were the focus of his own musings on the nature of the self and history in Abelard …
