The Educational Value Of 4-H Activities As Perceived By Louisiana 4-H Agents, Lanette Griffin Aug 1995

The Educational Value Of 4-H Activities As Perceived By Louisiana 4-H Agents, Lanette Griffin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the educational value of 4-H activities as perceived by Louisiana 4-H agents. Data were obtained by a researcher designed survey completed by 91 4-H agents during the 1994 Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service’s annual conference. The data showed the 4-H camp was the highest rated educational activity and it was the only activity perceived as having a very high educational value. Twenty activities were rated as high in educational value, 25 as moderate in educational value, and four items as low in educational value. Agents were also asked to estimate the number …

The Kinetics Of Quantal Transmitter Release From Retinal Amacrine Cells, Salvador Borges, Evanna Gleason, Michael Turelli, Martin Wilson Jul 1995

The Kinetics Of Quantal Transmitter Release From Retinal Amacrine Cells, Salvador Borges, Evanna Gleason, Michael Turelli, Martin Wilson

Faculty Publications

Exocytosis of transmitter at most synapses is a very fast process triggered by the entry of Ca2+ during an action potential. A reasonable expectation is that the fast step of exocytosis is followed by slow steps readying another vesicle for exocytosis but the identity and kinetics of these steps are presently unclear. By voltage clamping both pre- and postsynaptic neurons in an isolated pair of retinal amacrine cells, we have measured evoked synaptic currents and responses to single vesicles of transmitter (minis). From these currents, we have computed the rate of exocytosis during a sustained presynaptic depolarization. We show here …

We evaluate the ability of the BATSE spectroscopy detectors to detect the absorption lines observed by Ginga in gamma-ray burst spectra. We find that BATSE can detect the 20.6 keV line in the S1 segment of GB 870303 with a detection probability of ∼1/4 in nearly normal incident bursts, with the probability dropping off to nearly 0 at a burst angle of 50°; the lines at 19.4 and 38.8 keV in GB 880205 have a high detection probability in BATSE up to burst angles of 75°. In addition, we calculate detection probabilities for these two line types as a function …

Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson Jun 1995

Local Initiation Of Spermatogenesis In The Horse, A. J. Clemmons, D. L. Thompson, L. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Gross observation of testicular parenchyma of 1.5 to 2-yr-old horses reveals both light and dark regions. If this gross, differential shading reflects quantitative differences in the development of spermatogenesis and interstitial cell populations, the horse may prove to be a useful model for study of the paracrine relationships associated with initiation of spermatogenesis. The objective of this study was to characterize seminiferous tubules and interstitium of testes with gross, differential shading. Testes with both light and dark regions of parenchyma were obtained from horses 1.5- 2 yr old and compared to parenchyma of fetal, 2-yr old, or 5-yr-old horses. Stereology …

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep → e J/ψ p for Q2 < 4 GeV2 at s = 296 GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5 pb-1, using the ZEUS detector. The J/ψ was detected in its e+e- and μ+μ- decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be 52-12+7 ± 10 nb at an average γp centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and 71-20+13±12 nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low x in the proton is assumed. © 1995.

Bead Colors As Social Relations Markers At Mission Soledad, California, Lori Lee Buck May 1995

Bead Colors As Social Relations Markers At Mission Soledad, California, Lori Lee Buck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is an interpretive analysis focusing on the use of beads as a tool for determining social relations at Mission Soledad, California. The main indicator of social relations used in this thesis is bead distribution. Two attributes were used to classify the beads, color and type.

To understand the importance of the bead distribution, the ideologies of the three native cultures that were recruited to the mission and the Spanish missionaries who founded the mission were studied. From this information, color symbolism and sources were examined to gain knowledge of important colors. This was done with the hopes that …

We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel D*+ → (D0 → K-π+)π+ (+c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference ΔM=M(D*)-M(D0) as well as in the M(Kπ) distribution at the D0 mass are found. The ep cross section for inclusive D*± production with Q2 < 4 GeV2 in the γp centre-of-mass energy range 115 < W < 275 GeV has been determined to be (32±7-7+4) nb in the kinematic region pt(D*) ≥ 1.7 GeV, |η(D*)| < 1.5. Extrapolating outside this region, assuming a mass of the charm quark of 1.5 GeV, we estimate the ep charm cross section to be σ(ep → ccX) = (0.45 ± 0.11-0.22+0.37) μb at s=296 GeV and 〈W〉 = 198 GeV. The average γp charm cross section σ(γp → ccX) is found to be (6.3 ± 2.2-3.0+6.3) μb at 〈W〉 = 163 GeV and (16.9 ± 5.2-8.5+13.9) μb at 〈W〉 = 243 GeV. The increase of the total charm photoproduction cross section by one order of magnitude with respect to low energy data experiments is well described by QCD NLO calculations using singular gluon distributions in the proton. © 1995.

Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley Jan 1995

Equity Sensitivity: Scale Development And Validation., Kerry Shaun Sauley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Equity Sensitivity Instrument (Huseman, Hatfield, and Miles, 1985) has been the primary measure used in equity sensitivity research to date. It appears to suffer from content deficiency and an inappropriate scoring procedure. Because of these problems, this dissertation constructed a new measure, based on systematic item development procedures, that provided thorough coverage of the equity sensitivity construct. Development of the new measure was based on Huseman, Hatfield, & Miles' (1987) theory of equity sensitivity. Items for the new measure were developed using the traditional approach of developing items that directly inquire about a person's equity sensitivity and a second …

Limited Warfare As A Pragmatic Concern: The Bounds Of Domestic Consensus, The Controlled Use Of Force, And United States Security., Robert Keith Jones Jan 1995

Limited Warfare As A Pragmatic Concern: The Bounds Of Domestic Consensus, The Controlled Use Of Force, And United States Security., Robert Keith Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Over forty years since the Korean War, Americans continue to face limited war as a fundamental challenge to their security. In order to help the public to deal more effectively with the problem, this study seeks a pragmatic understanding of limited war (i.e., one in which it is possible to judge in retrospect the cumulative practical results of previous limited wars). In achieving that goal, two other objectives are sought: first, to model and critically evaluate two types of knowledge used by policymakers to wage limited wars; and, second, to detail the development of such knowledge from its historical origins …

Rhetoricizing Habermas: The Restoration Of Legitimacy As A Theme In The 1992 Televised Presidential Debates., Kevin Travis Jones Jan 1995

Rhetoricizing Habermas: The Restoration Of Legitimacy As A Theme In The 1992 Televised Presidential Debates., Kevin Travis Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the past twenty years, scholars have posited the emergence of a legitimacy crisis in the American political system. Symptoms of the crisis were low voter turn out and a culture of withdrawal, cynicism, alienation, and a widespread perception of institutional incompetence and indifference. At the very least, the widespread mood of apathy and decline have been seized upon by various candidates seeking political office, in particular the presidency, who routinely engage in discourse targeting legitimacy restoration. This discourse echoed the general theme of the Jeffersonian Myth. This myth, which predates Jefferson in its old Roman roots, targets the citizen …

Reconceptualizing A Secondary Content Area Reading Course From A Phenomenological Perspective Using Reflections Of Preservice Teachers., Edith Grossman Mayers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study is the reconceptualization of a secondary education six credit hour content area reading course. Classroom and field experiences were modified to promote preservice teachers' reflections concerning what teaching is, who teachers are, and self-as-teacher. The purpose of the revised multifaceted course was to provide opportunities for students' rethinking of teaching as they were taught or teaching as they experienced such in student teaching. In addition, prior lived experiences and students' resistance to a course in content area reading were examined from a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective. The existing course classroom experience was modified to include reading autobiographies and construction …

The Life History (Age, Growth And Reproduction) Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) And Its Affinity For Oil And Gas Platforms., Jeffrey Howard Render Jan 1995

The Life History (Age, Growth And Reproduction) Of Red Snapper (Lutjanus Campechanus) And Its Affinity For Oil And Gas Platforms., Jeffrey Howard Render

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to describe the association of red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, with oil and gas platform habitat in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Ages were estimated using transverse sections of sagittae. Annuli were validated to have formed yearly. Age estimates ranged from less than 1 to 54 years. Von Bertalanffy growth models were significantly different for males and females; females exhibited a faster initial growth rate but achieved a lesser maximum length than did males. The variability in age among individuals of a given length or weight class precluded formulation of age at size keys. Otolith …

The South And American Foreign Policy, 1894-1904: Regional Concerns During The Age Of Imperialism., Marshall E. Schott

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

After the depression of 1893, some New South prophets advocated a more assertive, foreign policy as a means to attain regional economic uplift. With the objective of obtaining overseas markets, some of the prophets even supported the use of force to create American colonies as an appropriate goal of American foreign policy. The acquisition of new territories, and hence, new markets, the prophets maintained, would be an economic boon to southern producers of cotton, textiles, and other goods. And the economic stimulus accompanying an increase in foreign trade would lift the region out of poverty, promote the growth of southern …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines Bela Bartok's Scherzo for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 2 (1904), a work that was composed during a period when the composer's style was about to undergo a radical change. Chapter One charts the course of Bartok's training as a pianist, discusses his compositional influences, and provides a brief history of the Scherzo and its more familiar sibling, the Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 1. Chapter Two looks at the Scherzo in detail, addressing the following: the overall form, the harmonic plan, the size and use of the orchestra, the idiomatic piano writing, and the use of …

The Dual Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: The Heroic Narratives Of Martin Luther King, Jr. And Malcolm X., Kerry Paul Owens Jan 1995

The Dual Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: The Heroic Narratives Of Martin Luther King, Jr. And Malcolm X., Kerry Paul Owens

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since reconstruction African-American leaders have embodied conflicting aspirations. While some leaders like Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass urged complete assimilation, others like W. E. B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey have preached autonomy and separation. These leaders have tended to serve as icons for rival programs; their rhetoric as authoritative, and their lives as inspired models for future leaders. This dissertation examines the hagiography of the two most famous leaders of the late 20th century, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. It argues that their rhetoric was undergirded by the myth of the heroic quest and that their lives …

The Efficacy Of Scaffolding Strategies In Holistic Language Intervention On Language And Phonologically Delayed Children., Monica Lynne Bradshaw Jan 1995

The Efficacy Of Scaffolding Strategies In Holistic Language Intervention On Language And Phonologically Delayed Children., Monica Lynne Bradshaw

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the efficacy of scaffolding strategies within holistic language intervention with six language and phonologically delayed preschool children. The scaffolding condition was compared to two experimental controls using either wh-questions or print awareness techniques. It was hypothesizsd that the use of scaffolding strategies would result in greater semantic displacement, syntactic complexity, and phonological complexity than the use of either the wh-questions or print awareness controls. Efficacy of the conditions was measured by (a) semantic levels, (b) mean length of utterance, and (c) percent of words produced correctly. An alternating treatment was employed in the single-subject study. The subjects …

An Examination Of Investor Evaluation Of Corporate Social Performance., Gisele Kay Jackson Jan 1995

An Examination Of Investor Evaluation Of Corporate Social Performance., Gisele Kay Jackson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the relative importance of criteria that investors consider when evaluating corporate social performance. Socially sensitive investing has increased in importance in the past two decades and the availability of information is key to effective social action. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the relative importance assigned to specific social criteria by representatives of socially or environmentally responsible mutual funds in the U.S. and abroad. A hierarchy of social criteria is developed. Five criteria enter into the evaluation of corporate social performance: community involvement, environment, fair business practices, human resources, and products and services. The …

The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley Jan 1995

The Effect Of Developmental Factors On The Use Of An Electronic Communication Device., Judith Danute Oxley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study addressed a poorly understood variable of voice output communication aid (VOCA) use, namely mnemonic development. Forty children without disabilities, aged from 49 to 60 months, were required to use an IntroTalker (Prentke Romich Company) to participate in a one-on-one storybook reading task with the investigator. They were provided with sixteen messages to use during a scripted reading of The Three Bears. Children could use a trained verbal elaboration strategy or generate their own methods to retrieve messages. Immediate and delayed responses of children under two training methods were compared, and the contribution of developmental factors, including metamemory, were …

The Socialization Of Beginning Principals In Louisiana: Organizational Constraints On Innovation., Scott Martin Norton Jan 1995

The Socialization Of Beginning Principals In Louisiana: Organizational Constraints On Innovation., Scott Martin Norton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the organizational socialization experiences of beginning principals. This study approached the problem through a mixed methodology strategy of research, using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. A factor analysis of 187 responses to a socialization survey instrument resulted in three components of socialization which were used as the dependent variables in the study. Variation was found in the principals' socialization level, but this variation was not predicted by any of the independent variables. For the dependent variable vision, African-American principals reported higher mean scores than white principals; also, principals in elementary schools showed …

The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan Jan 1995

The Production Of Triploid Oyster Larvae (Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin)) In Louisiana., John Eric Supan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gonadal recycling of oyster broodstock, salinity effects during induction, and cytochalasin B (CB) dosage were investigated as factors affecting the production of triploid oyster larvae in Louisiana. These factors were studied at an oyster hatchery on Grand Isle, LA during 1992-1994 to help transfer triploid oyster technology to the Gulf region. Oyster broodstock were held nearshore in Caminada Bay, Louisiana and histologically analyzed between induced spawnings and during the winter of 1992-1993. Gametogenesis was analyzed qualitatively by developmental staging and quantitatively using mean gonad/body ratios (GBR) per section. The monthly percent occurrence of the developmental stages, as well as histological …

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak Jan 1995

The Pueblo Region As A Linguistic Area: Diffusion Among The Indigenous Languages Of The Southwest United States., Catherine Bereznak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of this dissertation is to investigate whether the Pueblo region of the Southwest United States is a legitimate linguistic area (LA). The Pueblo region has long been recognized as a cohesive culture area, but an in-depth examination of the Pueblo region as a linguistic area has not previously been done. Because a linguistic area is by definition an area in which linguistic features have spread through diffusion, traits which are widespread for other reasons (e.g., genetic inheritance or independent parallel development) must be eliminated as evidence for a Pueblo LA. The methodological approach which I adopt emphasizes the …

Derivative Securities In Germany: An Examination Of The Price Discovery And Extreme Value Processes., John Paul Broussard Jan 1995

Derivative Securities In Germany: An Examination Of The Price Discovery And Extreme Value Processes., John Paul Broussard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the price discovery and extreme value processes found in Germany's stock index and stock index futures markets. These two concepts are framed within the fundamental relationship between risk and return found in the financial economics literature. Results from the price discovery analysis indicate that the stock index futures market processes information more quickly than the underlying spot market. However, this processing can be characterized by a feedback loop because sometimes the spot market processes information more quickly than the futures market. An indepth analysis of the information processing relationship implies that the futures market processes information faster …

An Introduction To The Songs Of Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) With Complete Chronological Catalogue., Viola R. Dacus Jan 1995

An Introduction To The Songs Of Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) With Complete Chronological Catalogue., Viola R. Dacus

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The German-born composer and conductor Felix Wolfes (1892-1971) left a substantial legacy of over two hundred inspired and finely crafted songs. These works have earned him a place among his self-proclaimed ancestors, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss, Mussorgsky, and his teachers, Reger and Pfitzner. Unfortunately, both the composer and his works remain virtually unknown today. Wolfes's output as a composer consists almost entirely of German lieder. His style is strongly rooted in the Romantic tradition of earlier lieder composers, but Wolfes did more than merely imitate his predecessors. While the majority of his output suggests a conservative post-tonal idiom, he frequently stretched …

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara Jan 1995

Text And Context Of The Suwo': Bribri Oral Tradition., Carla Victoria Jara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation comprises the analysis of six extensive texts in Bribri, a Chibchan language spoken in Costa Rica, Central America. The theoretical framework is based mainly on M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan's social-semiotic perspective of text analysis and on Joseph Grimes' analysis of discourse. In order to characterize this genre within its context of discourse, the three components of context, i.e., field, tenor and mode, have been defined for the corpus of texts. To determine how texture and structure, the basic properties of text, are displayed, one text is analyzed in detail and the results are compared with the other …

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale Jan 1995

Wiretapping And National Security: Nixon, The Mitchell Doctrine, And The White Panthers. Volume I., Jeff A. Hale

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses a modern version of a constitutional struggle which has characterized American democracy since the first days of the Republic: the citizen's right to privacy versus the Government's need to guarantee "national security." It addresses the Supreme Court's landmark Fourth Amendment wiretapping decision of June 1972, U.S. v. U.S. District Court, which ruled unconstitutional the so-called "Mitchell Doctrine", the Nixon Administration's attempt to gain Judicial sanction for "national security" wiretaps without prior court order of suspected "domestic subversive" groups. In its unanimous Keith decision, the Court upheld the "primacy of warrants" in domestic intelligence investigations. Keith remains the …
