Louisiana Acadian Handicrafts, Valex Richard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was the purpose of the writer to make a study of the Acadian handicraft work and to determine its role in the settlement of Louisiana. This required discovery of each craft’s origin, brief tracing of its development, and its value to the Acadian people. To make this craft study, the writer visited the Acadian settlement in Southwestern Louisiana, interviewed officials, watched the native Acadian craftsmen at work, inspected equipment, took photographs of the craft designs, questioned producer or owner as …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Lower Mississippi River delta is an area of active sedimentation receiving an estimated two-million tons of material daily via the Mississippi River. This sediment is being deposited in bodies of water which differ in such physical properties as salinity, temperature and depth. Variations in these environmental factors influence or possibly control the distribution of life which in turn determine the nature of the organic remains incorporated with the sediment deposited.

This study of the recent foraminiferal faunules from the environment of the lower delta stemmed from an investigation of the mudlumps at the mouths of the; passes of the …

The Sugar Plantations Of William J. Minor, 1830-1860, Charles L. Wingfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

When the fertile regions of south Louisiana were devoted to the growth of sugar cane and the production of raw sugar on a commercial scale, resident farmers converted from cotton to the new staple, and planters from neighboring regions invested heavily in the new commodity. One such adventurer was Stephen Minor, whose one plantation in Ascension Parish was expanded into three in Louisiana by his son, William J. Minor. Waterloo plantation, as the Ascension land was called, and the two Terrebonne Parish plantations, Southdown and Hollywood, were operated on an absentee basis by William J. Minor until 1856, when he …
