The Effects Of Carbon On Nitrogen Transformations In Restored Wetland And Wastewater Soils, Jared M. Theriot Jan 2012

The Effects Of Carbon On Nitrogen Transformations In Restored Wetland And Wastewater Soils, Jared M. Theriot

LSU Master's Theses

Since the industrialization of the Haber-Bosch process in the 1940’s, anthropogenic activity has nearly doubled the Earth’s nitrogen fixation. Furthermore, nitrate has become the number one groundwater contaminant in the United States and has harmful effects such as eutrophication, algal blooms, and pollution of drinking water. Soils from two sites influenced by high nitrate loading were examined to determine their biogeochemical integrity. First, the Loosahatchie Bar, located northwest of Memphis, Tennessee, is influenced by excess surface water nitrate loading by the Mississippi River. The Loosahatchie Bar is a newly restored wetland that now has similar hydrologic influence to an upstream …

Evaluation Of Pleistocene To Holocene (Mis 5 To 1) Climatic Changes In Southwestern Black Sea: A Palynological Study Of Dsdp Site 380, Shannon Ferguson Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Pleistocene To Holocene (Mis 5 To 1) Climatic Changes In Southwestern Black Sea: A Palynological Study Of Dsdp Site 380, Shannon Ferguson

LSU Master's Theses

Site 380 of the Deep Sea Drilling Program [DSDP] is located in the southwestern region of the Black Sea (42°05.94’, 29°36.82’E). The location of this site is important due to its proximity to the narrow Bosphorus strait, the only present-day connection between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. Drops in eustatic sea level during extensive Pleistocene glacial episodes disconnected the Black Sea from the Aegean Sea at the Bosphorus strait, creating a change from brackish to freshwater within the Black Sea during these intervals. Organic-walled phytoplankton (dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs, and fresh-water algae) are investigated to better constrain these glacio-eustatic …

A Survey Of Ballistosporic Phylloplane Yeasts In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sebastian Albu Jan 2012

A Survey Of Ballistosporic Phylloplane Yeasts In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sebastian Albu

LSU Master's Theses

A study documenting basidiomycete yeast biodiversity was conducted in Baton Rouge, Louisiana during 2010 and 2011. Using the spore-fall method, the leaf surfaces of seven ferns were sampled at biweekly intervals. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit (LSU) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were used to identify 463 isolates representing 81 species spanning 12 orders within six classes in Basidiomycota. Nearly 30 of these isolates appear to be species new to science. Data indicate fern leaf developmental stage has an effect on the number of yeasts present. A …

"Condoms And Candy": Pro-Choice Students On Campus, Jordan Rebecca Kea Jan 2012

"Condoms And Candy": Pro-Choice Students On Campus, Jordan Rebecca Kea

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis seeks to understand the dynamics of a feminist student organization within the context of a college campus in southern Louisiana. Through a methodology of participant observation, interviews, spot observations and archival research I examine how this pro-choice organization navigates campus public space. This project focuses on aspects of collaboration or collective action within a network of organizations, the participation of members, and the discursive processes of storytelling and audience effects. This collaborative ethnography also investigates how cross-sex interactions mediate topics of motherhood, abortion, and sexuality.

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards Jan 2012

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards

LSU Master's Theses

A common method used by consumers to determine if shrimp are thoroughly cooked when boiling, is to wait until the shrimp float to the top of the water and are pink in color. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the current floating and color cooking method is adequate to ensure the elimination of Listeria and Salmonella species. Furthermore, to determine if processing and storage methods reduce the effectiveness of this method. Shrimp samples were submerged into bacterial suspensions for 30 min then allowed to air dry for 1 hr and color parameters were measured using a colorimeter. …

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg Jan 2012

Biomass And Mass Balance Isotope Content Of Mussel Seep Populations, Philip Martin Riekenberg

LSU Master's Theses

Cold seep mussels, Bathymodiolus childressi, are common cold seep constituents that form large populations at upper continental slope (500-1000 m) cold seep sites in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. These mussels utilize methane present through symbiotic relationships with methanotrophic bacteria. This study uses a coupled isotope technique to determine the relative incorporation of respiratory carbon in the shell as a measure of the availability of methane between different seep sites. This method indicates a higher abundance of methane at the Brine Pool site than at the Bush Hill site which appears significantly more resource limited and that changes in methane …

The Problem And Possibility Of Animal Minds In Brandom's Work: Revisiting Heidegger, Rationality And Normativity, Joel David Musser Jan 2012

The Problem And Possibility Of Animal Minds In Brandom's Work: Revisiting Heidegger, Rationality And Normativity, Joel David Musser

LSU Master's Theses

Robert Brandom denies animals implicit reasoning by emphasizing their inability to make inferences explicit, and in so doing, denigrates animals by likening their behavior to that of machines and artifacts. I contest, however, that animals are paradigmatically more than any similarity or analogy to mechanical processing, just as humans are paradigmatically more than any reductive analogy to animals. The human/animal distinction need not come at the cost of ignoring the difference between animals and artifacts, and I believe we can largely subscribe to Brandom’s differentiation of the human in terms of expressionism if we allow that animals can make implicit …

Social Influences On Sculpted Romanesque Corbels In The Eleventh And Twelfth Centuries, Chelsea Buras Jan 2012

Social Influences On Sculpted Romanesque Corbels In The Eleventh And Twelfth Centuries, Chelsea Buras

LSU Master's Theses

Sculpted corbels of the Romanesque period are often categorized as obscene or grotesque, and frequently dismissed as medieval humor or an individual artist’s imagination. Common themes on corbels include images of debauchery and obscenity, as well as depictions of the effects of sin. These themes are usually communicated through the image of entertainers (acrobats, musicians, and dancers), acts of excess such as overindulgence in alcohol or sexual vice, threatening gestures, monstrous animals, or the human visage transformed by idiocy. As titillating and lowbrow as the images on corbels may seem, they should not be relegated to categories of absurdity or …

Rsd-2 Mediates Rde-4-Independent Antiviral Silencing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Rui Zhang Jan 2012

Rsd-2 Mediates Rde-4-Independent Antiviral Silencing In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Rui Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

RNA interference (RNAi) is a phylogenetically conserved gene regulation mechanism that modulates a wide variety of biological functions through suppressing gene expression at transcriptional or posttranscriptional levels (Bass 2000; Sharp 2001). One of the major natural functions of RNAi is antiviral defense in cytosol. RNAi directed viral immunity (RDVI) targets viral transcripts for destruction using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) processed from viral replication intermediates, in the form of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), as sequence guide (Lu, Maduro et al. 2005). Accumulating evidence suggests RDVI in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans begins with the biogenesis of virus-derived siRNAs (viRNAs) by DCR-1 (Bernstein, …

Biodiesel Production From Microalgae: Co-Location With Sugar Mills, Christian Lohrey Jan 2012

Biodiesel Production From Microalgae: Co-Location With Sugar Mills, Christian Lohrey

LSU Master's Theses

Co-location of algae production facilities with sugarcane mills in Louisiana was investigated as a way to address the bottlenecks for algal biodiesel production. Using the process modeling software Sugars™, an algal biodiesel production process was integrated with the operation of a typical-sized 10,000 metric tons/day (11,000 short tons/day) sugarcane mill to evaluate material and energy balances. A process is proposed wherein alga production is supplemented with energy, water, and CO2 available from a sugarcane mill. The Energy Return on Invested, EROI (a ratio of the energy produced/energy required) of the proposed algal biodiesel production process was 1.25; meaning 25% more …

Reductive Dechlorination Of High Concentrations Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas Sp., Andrew D. Maness Jan 2012

Reductive Dechlorination Of High Concentrations Of 1,2-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, And 1,1,2-Trichloroethane By Dehalogenimonas Sp., Andrew D. Maness

LSU Master's Theses

The research goals presented here were to evaluate the solvent concentrations over which Dehalogenimonas lykanthroporepellens strain BL-DC-9T and Dehalogenimonas sp. IP3-3 are able to reductively dechlorinate 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), 1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP), and 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA). Both of these novel bacteria were isolated from contaminated groundwater at the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. Superfund site located near Baton Rouge. Both cluster in the phylum Chloroflexi, related to, but distinct from, the widely studied, reductively dechlorinating “Dehalococcoides” strains .

Although previous research demonstrated that strains BL-DC-9T and IP3-3 are able to reductively dechlorinate a variety of polyhalogenated alkanes, the solvent concentration at which the strains …

Improving Nitrogen Management In Sugarcane Production Of The Mid-South Using Remote Sensing Technology, Joshua Lofton Jan 2012

Improving Nitrogen Management In Sugarcane Production Of The Mid-South Using Remote Sensing Technology, Joshua Lofton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In Louisiana, current N rate recommendations for sugarcane production are based on multiple year N response trials and refined based on soil and crop variables. Without accounting for current growing conditions, recommendations can potentially lead to over- or under-application of N. The objectives of this research were to 1) determine the ability of an in-season response index value (RINDVI) to estimate sugarcane yield response index (RIHarvest), 2) determine if sugarcane yield potential could be determined using normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI), and 3) estimate the optimum N rate and application timing for sugarcane production in Louisiana. Experiments were established in …

Rapid Microwave Drying Of Non-Food Agricultural Feedstock For Improved Biofuel Production, Laura A. Picou Jan 2012

Rapid Microwave Drying Of Non-Food Agricultural Feedstock For Improved Biofuel Production, Laura A. Picou

LSU Master's Theses

Due to limited supply of traditional fossil based fuels, and increased interest in air and water quality along with other environmental concerns, there has been a rise in the utilization of biomass based energy sources. Many agricultural materials can be used for the production of biofuels, including materials that are typically underutilized such as sweet sorghum bagasse and otherwise nuisance species such as Chinese tallow tree seeds. The goal of this project was to examine the relationship between the dielectric properties of sweet sorghum bagasse and Chinese tallow tree (CTT) seeds, respectively, and frequency and moisture content; to determine pertinent …

Immunization Of West Nile Recombinant Envelope Domain Iii With Equine Cd40 Ligand Protein Vaccine Induced Specific Immune Response In Rabbits And Horses, Shiliang Anthony Liu Jan 2012

Immunization Of West Nile Recombinant Envelope Domain Iii With Equine Cd40 Ligand Protein Vaccine Induced Specific Immune Response In Rabbits And Horses, Shiliang Anthony Liu

LSU Master's Theses

West Nile virus (WNV) is one of several flaviruses known to infect mammalian species, including humans. There were 15,257 horse cases reported in 2002 and 1,086 in 2006 in United States. Recently, significant increases in equine and human cases have been reported in United States. Domain III of the WNV envelope protein binds to cellular receptors, and induces a significant portion of the neutralizing antibody response against the virus. CD40 Ligand (CD40L, CD154) enhances productive interactions between T cells and APC and has been shown to function as a potential adjuvant. In this study, we constructed and expressed a fusion …

The Effects Of Iodixanol Present During Equine Semen Cryopreservation, David Paul Beehan Jan 2012

The Effects Of Iodixanol Present During Equine Semen Cryopreservation, David Paul Beehan

LSU Master's Theses

The objectives of this study were to determine what effects iodixanol would have on total and progressive motility, plasma membrane integrity (viability), acrosome integrity and DNA structure when present during cryopreservation of equine spermatozoa,. We hypothesized that the addition of iodixanol would improve post-thaw values for measured parameters. Ejaculates from six stallions were collected, centrifuged at 900 x g for ten minutes to remove supernatant, and suspended to 200 x 106 cells/ml with 0%, 2.5% and 5% iodixanol in an egg-yolk based extender and cryopreserved. Before and after cryopreservation sperm motility was assessed by computer assisted semen analysis, and samples …

Turn-On's And Edible Friends: An Imaginal Menagerie, Matthew Ryan Henderson Jan 2012

Turn-On's And Edible Friends: An Imaginal Menagerie, Matthew Ryan Henderson

LSU Master's Theses

Turn-on’s and Edible Friends explores alternative sexual behavior. Societal standards have an overwhelming interest in imposing judgment upon sexual identity. The imagery is influenced by taboo and peculiar sexual fetishes. Animal personifications of the fetish are used as satire to detach the viewer from the action, and also as a metaphor for the reins with which the general public takes control over our private relationships. Thus the work becomes confrontational with the viewer and forces them to question their perceptions and comforts about sexual identity.

Holding-Responsible And Liability, Luke Kosinski Jan 2012

Holding-Responsible And Liability, Luke Kosinski

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is an attempt to separate holding-responsible from accountability, where accountability is understood as being the substratum or ground of one’s acts, the subject-cause. It begins from François Raffoul’s rethinking of responsibility in his book, The Origins of Responsibility, as separate from accountability and asks if holding-responsible is possible on such an account. Holding-responsible is examined through the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, Harry Frankfurt, and Martin Heidegger. In Nietzsche, the phenomenological roots of the terms are examined in the breeding of an animal that can promise, the relationship between a creditor and an ower, and the belief that debt …

Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald Jan 2012

Effects Of Varying Land Use On Headwater Stream Fish Assemblages And In-Stream Habitats In Southwestern Louisiana, Alexandra Marie Fitzgerald

LSU Master's Theses

Although watershed land use effects on in-stream fish habitat and fish-macrohabitat associations have been widely studied in the past, low-gradient, coastal Louisiana streams have been poorly described in the literature. In this thesis, I report the results of a two-year study exploring relationships among regional land use, in-stream physical habitat, and headwater stream fish assemblages. In chapter two, I examined in-stream habitat variables such as depth, flow, and substrate combined with three-pass electrofishing depletion estimates at thirteen 100-m stream sites. I used a combination of principle component analysis and structural equation modeling to determine if trends were present in the …

Gis-Based Spatial Analysis Of Place Names In Yunnan, China, Ling Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Yunnan, with the largest number of minority languages in China, is labeled as “The Museum of Dialects”. The rich diversity of ethnic groups is reflected in its toponyms (place names). The objectives of this study are to (1) construct a GIS database of toponyms in Yunnan at the prefecture, county and township levels from a comprehensive toponymical dictionary series of China; (2) analyze the spatial distribution of Han, Tibeto-Burman (Zang-Mian) and Kam-Tai (Zhuang-Dong) toponyms and its association with environmental factors; and (3) examine the historical evolution of toponyms. Results show that the study shows that the highest concentrations of Zang-Mian …

Advice In Troubles Talk Conversations Between Strangers: The Role Of Problem Seriousness And The Impact Of Advice On Helper Supportiveness And The Desire For Future Interactions, Andrea Jean Vickery Jan 2012

Advice In Troubles Talk Conversations Between Strangers: The Role Of Problem Seriousness And The Impact Of Advice On Helper Supportiveness And The Desire For Future Interactions, Andrea Jean Vickery

LSU Master's Theses

In troubles talk conversations, problems are disclosed and discussed. When responding to problem disclosures, advice is one common response where the respondent recommends how to think, feel or act in response to a problem. This thesis focuses on extending our understanding of advice messages, with a main research question focused on determining if advice occurs in initial interactions between strangers. Through an analysis of 125 transcribed conversations, advice was present in 38.4% (n = 44) of the conversations. Advice was offered in response to less serious problems, supporting the first hypothesis. There was no support found for the positive association …

Comparative Genomics, Transcriptome Analysis And Characterization Of Selected Regulatory Genes Of Burkholderia Glumae, Felix Francis Jan 2012

Comparative Genomics, Transcriptome Analysis And Characterization Of Selected Regulatory Genes Of Burkholderia Glumae, Felix Francis

LSU Master's Theses

Burkholderia glumae is the primary causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice, which is becoming a major threat to global rice production. The genome of a highly virulent B. glumae strain, 336gr-1 that was isolated from rice in Louisiana, was sequenced to better understand the genome-scale characteristics, particularly that of its pathogenicity. Comparative genomic analyses with another strain, BGR1 that was isolated from Korea, revealed several unique regions present in the genomes of these two geographically separated phytopathogenic bacteria. Genome plasticity, primarily caused by a horizontal gene transfer, was observed in these closely related strains of Burkholderia that are …

Pregnancy And The Relationship To Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Ann Hardin Shaw Jan 2012

Pregnancy And The Relationship To Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Ann Hardin Shaw

LSU Master's Theses

The Macular Study was a case control study that evaluated if parity and other participant characteristics predicted the diagnosis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Women, compared to men, are at higher risk for AMD. AMD is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly population [1]. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) is a long-chain fatty acid that is essential for the structure and function of the eye. During pregnancy the growing fetus depletes the maternal stores of DHA through placental transfer. The fetus needs an ample supply of DHA for proper retinal and central nervous system development. To date …

Hidden Music: Vowel Formant Theory And The Languages Of Verdi's Don Carolos, Justin Andrew Owen Jan 2012

Hidden Music: Vowel Formant Theory And The Languages Of Verdi's Don Carolos, Justin Andrew Owen

LSU Master's Theses

Don Carlos, Giuseppe Verdi’s third French opera, was first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1867; today, it is commonly performed in its Italian translation. This translation is problematic, however, because it departs from the original French in more than language: as a translation to be sung, it often conveys a different meaning, places key words on different sections of the melody, and consists of a different sound. This latter aspect and its relationship to notated melody is the focus of this study. For the purpose of this study, the sound of a language is defined by the overtones of …

Decoding Comics: Essential Elements For Transcription, Ni Tyjah Thigpen Jan 2012

Decoding Comics: Essential Elements For Transcription, Ni Tyjah Thigpen

LSU Master's Theses

Comics (plural in form but used with a singular verb as defined by Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, HarperPerennial) provides a fresh perspective on the interaction of culture and language and spans from simple one-frame comics to graphic novels. Speech in comics is fully interpretable only in relation to the other elements; therefore a transcription system that includes them all is necessary. I have developed a unique transcription method which incorporates all the salient aspects of comic art revealing the linguistic codes embedded within. I show that transcription techniques, while primarily focused on speech, can also be applied …

An Analysis Of Change In Policy Context Regarding Corexit Dispersant Use Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kelly Arceneaux Jan 2012

An Analysis Of Change In Policy Context Regarding Corexit Dispersant Use Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Kelly Arceneaux

LSU Master's Theses

On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the offshore drilling platform Deepwater Horizon located in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in the largest oil spill in U.S. history. The subsequent use of massive amounts of chemical dispersants near the Gulf floor, an untested method, led to great controversy regarding the regulation, use, and toxicity of dispersants of the COREXIT family of products, as well as of dispersants in general. This study compares dispersant (COREXIT brand products in particular) regulation and use in the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom; the latter two countries are among the largest oil producers …

Reduced Protein For Late-Lactation Dairy Cows, Andre De Barros Duarte Pereira Jan 2012

Reduced Protein For Late-Lactation Dairy Cows, Andre De Barros Duarte Pereira

LSU Master's Theses

Excess protein in dairy cattle diets unnecessarily increases the cost of production and may contribute to environmental pollution. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of feeding dairy cows with two levels of dietary protein on animal performance and manure characteristics. Two experiments were carried out with 24 lactating dairy cows each. Experiment 1 was corn silage based and had a control TMR (HP1) estimated to contain 16.5% CP with SBM and treatment TMR (LP1; 13.5% CP) using DDGS and rumen protected Lys and Met. Experiment 2 was ryegrass haylage based and had a control TMR (HP2) …

Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner Jan 2012

Effects Of Mimic Artificial Oyster Reefs On The Ecology Of Juvenile Fishes In Marsh Ponds: A Before-After-Control-Impact Analysis, Steven B. Garner

LSU Master's Theses

I sought to assess the enhancement potential of mimic artificial oyster reefs (MAORs) on trophic dynamics of juvenile estuarine fishes in marsh ponds. Tropic dynamics were investigated by determining the impacts of MAOR addition on meiofauna and macrofauna and then comparing these results to the gut contents and condition of four abundant estuarine fishes: Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), bay whiff (Citharichthys spilopterus), sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius), and pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides). Samples were collected every other month for two years (March 2009 – 11) employing a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design. Halfway through the experiment (March 2010), two mud sites in two marsh …

Water Quality Dynamics Of Low-Gradient, Headwater Streams In A Timber-Industry Dominated Watershed In Louisiana, Abram Atys Dasilva Jan 2012

Water Quality Dynamics Of Low-Gradient, Headwater Streams In A Timber-Industry Dominated Watershed In Louisiana, Abram Atys Dasilva

LSU Master's Theses

Timber harvesting can degrade the quality of adjacent water bodies, an important concern for Louisiana, nearly 50% of which is forested, and in which the forest industry is the second-largest manufacturing employer. To protect valuable freshwater resources in Louisiana, a manual of best management practices (BMPs) was published in 2000 describing techniques for limiting forestry-caused water quality degradation. While these BMPs are widely implemented, their effectiveness in protecting water quality is largely unknown. To determine the effectiveness of these BMPs, this thesis research conducted three studies to address timber harvest BMP effectiveness on protection of stream dissolved oxygen, metabolism, and …

Developing A Geospatial Protocol For Coral Epizootiology, Jennifer Anne Lentz Jan 2012

Developing A Geospatial Protocol For Coral Epizootiology, Jennifer Anne Lentz

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial statistics, specifically the techniques used to map, detect, and spatially analyze disease epidemics, could be used to advance our understanding of coral reef health. Given that different types of spatial analysis, as well as different parameter settings within each analysis, can produce noticeably different results, poor selection or improper use of a given technique would likely lead to inaccurate representations of the spatial distribution and false interpretations of the disease. For this reason, I performed a comprehensive review of the following types of exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA): mapping and …

Modeling Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat In A Fire-Dependnent Ecosystem In North Florida, Christina Legleu Jan 2012

Modeling Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) Habitat In A Fire-Dependnent Ecosystem In North Florida, Christina Legleu

LSU Master's Theses

Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) populations have declined with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystems across their historic range. The influence of gopher tortoise burrows on co-inhabiting plants and animals necessitates an understanding of how landscape features and management practices influence gopher tortoise presence, absence, and abandonment. In this study, naïve gopher tortoise burrow encounter rates from a line transect distance sampling (LTDS) pilot study were used for two methods of modeling gopher tortoise habitat. In Chapter 1, naïve encounter rates were tested for a linear correlation to a HSI model created from three ranked geographic information system (GIS) landscape variables. Initial …
