Informal Support Of Older Persons Under Different Living Arrangements : A Case Study In Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, Ching Ying, Anita Ng
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This research focuses on sources of informal support for elderly people under different living arrangements in Hong Kong, with Tuen Mun new town as a case study. The thesis attempts to assess the attitudes of elderly people to the needs and adequacy of the informal support provided by their family members and their social support network. It also attempts to assess older people's views of the incentives and motivations for children to provide support to their elderly parents. In this way, it hopes to throw light on conceptual issues including the role of filial piety and changes in intergenerational relations, …

Age Differences In Work Adjustment : A Study Of Male And Female Managerial Stress, Coping Strategies And Locus Of Control In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu, Paul E. Spector, Cary L. Cooper, Kate Sparks, Ian Donald

The present study is a 15 month project which involved data collection from Hong Kong managers at three points to examine mechanisms by which age would relate to work well-being. A total of 634 managers, both male and female, was drawn by random sampling and purposive sampling methods. The results showed that age was negatively related to job strains and quitting intention, and positively related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, older managers reported fewer sources of stress, better control coping, and a more internal work locus of control. Multiple regression analyses suggested that relations of age with job satisfaction and well-being …

Personal Control And Organizational Coping Strategies Of Job Stress : Empirical Results From China, Oi Ling Siu, Jianhong Ma
APIAS Working Paper 工作論文
The purpose of the present study is first to examine the relationship between organizational strategies and job stress, taking the assumption that personal control will mediate the underlying organizational strategies-job stress connection, and then to develop stress copings by recombining management with regard to their impact on personal control. Further, the role of educational level and types of jobs on job stress will also be examined.

The present study is a 15-month project which collected data from Hong Kong mangers at three points to examine the role of age, coping strategies, and locus of control in managerial stress in Hong Kong. The Occupational Stress Indicator-version 2 (OSI-2) was used as the instrument to collect data by self-administered survey method. Gender Differences In Retirement Planning : Some Observations On The Case Of Hong Kong, W. K., Kenneth Law
Gender Differences In Retirement Planning : Some Observations On The Case Of Hong Kong, W. K., Kenneth Law
APIAS Working Paper 工作論文
Despite the importance of retirement planning to the maintenance of social and economic well-being in later life (Monk, 1985; Dorfman, 1989, Maule, Cliff, and Taylor, 1996) and in spite of the fact that retirement planning has received increased attention from western gerontology researchers, it is as yet largely missing from the agenda of elderly research in Hong Kong. This paper presents an attempt to introduce some local insights into the subject.
Ageing In The Asia-Pacific Region : Trends And Policy Implications, David Rosser Phillips
Ageing In The Asia-Pacific Region : Trends And Policy Implications, David Rosser Phillips
APIAS Working Paper 工作論文
Summary
This paper reviews the background to demographic ageing in the Asia-Pacific region and discusses some of the economic and cultural features associated with it. The region includes countries exhibiting a variety of experience in demographic ageing and percentages aged 65 years or more range from 3% to 16%. Fairly distinct sub-regional ageing groupings are emerging. At the demographically older extreme lie Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea. With somewhat smaller percentages of elderly people come China (with huge numbers of elderly people but low per capita income), Thailand and Indonesia and which are likely to have above the …

Hong Kong has been a British Colony for more than one and a half centuries. The British has provided a legal-administrative framework under which the Chinese live and work (Chan and Lee, 1995), The Census showed that ninety-eight percent of the Territory's total population are ethnically Chinese. In 1991, nearly one half of HongKong's residents were immigrants from the Chinese Mainland and two thirds of the remaining were Hong Kong born off-springs of immigrants from the mainland. Although expatriotes from other countries are accountable for the remainder 2% of the population, a great majority of expatriotes are from overseas Chinese …

ln spite of the complexity of such dynamic relationships in the caregiving system, the literature shows that dominant research paradigm has places elderly care in the framework of a simple, unqualified social exchange theory. The primary goal of this paper to critique research approach based on the social exchange theory. First, we wish to discuss how the exchange theory lies at the heart of the debate between the proponents and opponents of having family members as the primary care providers for elderly. We wish to review the basic assumptions that social exchange theory holds about caregiving relationships. Second, we suggest …

Positive Effects Of Modernization On Later Life, Wing Kin, Kenneth Law
Positive Effects Of Modernization On Later Life, Wing Kin, Kenneth Law
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
Early gerontological theories (e.g., role theory, subculture theory, disengagement theory, activity theory and modernization theory) on the study of the elderly used to concentrate on the discussion of the effects of various kinds of social change on individuals' later life adaptation. Modernization has conventionally been perceived as a bad dream for most elderly people. It is the modernization which deskills them, devalues their experiences, take away their authority, ... and finally leaves them in misery.
The validity and applicability of this simple relationship between modernization and the misery of later life as a result of the decline of social status …

The dual purpose of this paper is:
• to provide a context for the Patten administration's latest, and perhaps its last, aged income-support system reform prescription in terms of possible policy goals, the broad spectrum of income support strategies available, and the internationally-recognised minimum standards for social security programs; and
• to set out a specific program design agenda related to program coverage, withdrawal contingencies, program financing and program administration that the Patten administration needs to address when developing its latest proposed aged income-support program.
