Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior
Hannah More And The Evangelical Influence On The English Novel, Karen Swallow Prior
Faculty Dissertations
Hannah More was a significant literary, political, and social figure of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Ample evidence exists that More's only novel, Coelebs in Search of a Wife (1808), played a significant role in increasing the popularity and acceptability of the genre of the novel. Yet, More's rightful place in the story of the "rise of the novel" has been largely overlooked in literary criticism today.
This dissertation examines the life, work, and influence of Hannah More, an Evangelical Anglican, feminist, and social reformer. Emphasis is placed on those aspects of her life that demonstrate More's unique …

Proper Function, Natural Reason, And Evils As Extrinsic Goods, Edward N. Martin
Proper Function, Natural Reason, And Evils As Extrinsic Goods, Edward N. Martin
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
This is a paper about God, evil, and the soul-making theodicy. Too often we pair together this theodicy with various liberal philosophical theologians (e.g. John Hick), and miss the importance of the rich resources that we find in the theodicy itself. I would like to propose that we not overlook the continuing importance of this theodical method, for this method or approach to theodicy seems squarely in line, in its essential parts, with the New Testament conception of the development of Christian character and the theological virtue of hope. Consider Paul's sentiment in the Book of Romans.

"The People Have Not Obeyed": A Literary And Rhetorical Study Of Jeremiah 26-45, Gary E. Yates
"The People Have Not Obeyed": A Literary And Rhetorical Study Of Jeremiah 26-45, Gary E. Yates
Faculty Dissertations
The goal of this study is to provide a holistic reading of the largely narrative material in Jeremiah 26-45 that is informed by the disciplines of literary and rhetorical criticism. This study seeks to contribute to the growing trend of reading the book of Jeremiah as a literary entity that possesses an editorial unity in spite of the complex compositional history that appears to stand behind the book. This study will focus primarily on the overarching plot and structure that emerge from the reading of Jeremiah 26-45. The thesis is that this section of the book of Jeremiah consists of …

Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Developing An Effective Ministry With Mid Life Single Adults In A Mega Church, Charles Richard Hughes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of current literature demonstrates that very little material is available to assist local churches with developing a targeted ministry with mid life single adults. The purpose of this project was to answer the basic research question of how an effective ministry with mid life single adults was developed in a mega church by answering six sub questions concerning demographic analysis, the need, a model, the membership, leadership and administration, forming a chain of variables for effective ministry. Based on an extensive questionnaire of the membership in 1991 and 1994 the project draws conclusions in this historical perspective case …
Seminary Student Spiritual Formation: Recommendations Based On A Review Of Scripture And A Survey Of Evangelical Seminaries, William E. Wegert
Seminary Student Spiritual Formation: Recommendations Based On A Review Of Scripture And A Survey Of Evangelical Seminaries, William E. Wegert
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Concern for the spiritual formation in ministerial training has grown in recent years, and reasons for this are discussed. The history of spiritual formation in pastoral training as well as relevant Scriptures are reviewed. Particular attention is given to Christ's earthly ministry as well as key biblical terms related to spiritual formation. Certain expectations based on the weight of Scripture are determined. Results of a spiritual formation survey sent to thirty-five evangelical seminaries and a self-study of the writer's own seminary are analyzed. This project makes recommendations for enhancing seminary spiritual formation efforts.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among alcohol consumption, sexual assault and rape, and nonsexual violence in a college population at a large Northeastern university. A 49-item questionnaire was designed to elicit responses from both victims and perpetrators. Of the 1,084 respondents: 518 were male, 566 were female, the majority were White (91.8%), and in the 18-21 age range. Unwanted sexual activity, rape, and violence were significantly related to alcohol consumption on the college campus studied. These data indicated that alcohol was involved in: a) unwanted sexual activity--both from the victim's perspective (85.7%) and from the …

A Strategy For Evaluating The Liberty University Convocation Program, Robert Roy Jackson
A Strategy For Evaluating The Liberty University Convocation Program, Robert Roy Jackson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of the current literature demonstrates that virtually no material is available that assists accredited Christian universities and colleges in evaluating their convocation! chapel programs. The purpose of this project is to develop a strategy for evaluating the Liberty University Convocation Program with a view towards helping others with the same process. This project accomplishes the purpose by examining the particular audience that we are currently ministering to in convocation (Generation X), along with strategies for reaching them, and analyzing data from internal and external convocation surveys with the goal of improving convocation.

A Strategy For Ministry To Widows In The Local Church, Richard Watson Sadler
A Strategy For Ministry To Widows In The Local Church, Richard Watson Sadler
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In examining current literature, very little research has been done in the area of caring for widows in the local church. The biblical mandate, present social conditions, and the results from questionnaires sent to pastors and widows of Southern Baptist Churches of West Virginia validate the need to assist the church in developing and implementing a strategy in ministering to widows. Deacons, the servant-leaders, are the responsible agents for ministry to widows and the catalyst in getting others involved. This project is an instrument to awaken and equip God's people for the tremendous ministry privilege in serving widows.
