The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee May 2000

The Influence Of Shamanism On Korean Churches And How To Overcome It, Jin Woo Lee

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

What problem do Korean churches have now? Korean churches have had serious growth problems since the 1990s'. Although Korean churches have grown rapidly with the economic growth of Korea, there have been many contributions and evil influences of shamanism, which lies deep in the minds of Korean people. Obviously, shamanism has made a contribution to growth of the Korean church since Christianity was introduced. Many churches and pastors have consented to or utilized such a tendency. However, this created serious problems. Shamanism is anti-Biblical. Shamanism brought about a theoretical combination, transmutation of religion and many mistakes in church life. A …

A Strategy For The Use Of Ministry Action Teams In The Relocation Of A Church Of The Nazarene, Truman Daniel Casey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

When Atlanta First Church of the Nazarene faced the task of relocating their current facilities to a location several miles away, the pastor and the leaders of the church searched for a strategy that would allow the church to relocate without greatly reducing the amount of time the pastor had available for pastoral care. The church also wanted to avoid an excessive increase in the level of stress for other participants in the project. Based upon (1) research of church management literature, (2) research of the Bible, (3) a survey of the people involved in the church relocation project, and …

A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark Apr 2000

A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Old Testament preaching appears to be on the decline. Very often when it is preached, it is done poorly. Since narratives comprise 40% of the Old Testament, a large portion of God's Word is being either neglected or abused by many modern preachers. The purpose of this project is to show how proven hermeneutical and homiletical skills may be combined to provide a strategy for effectively preaching Old Testament narratives. The project will present a series of sermons based on the Old Testament book of Ruth which will demonstrate the author's strategy as it is fleshed out in practical exposition.

The Role Of E-Mail On Information Overload In Organizational Managers, Bruce K. Bell Feb 2000

The Role Of E-Mail On Information Overload In Organizational Managers, Bruce K. Bell

Faculty Dissertations

This descriptive case study explored the role of e-mail on information overload in organizational managers. Conducting research at two international organizations in Central Virginia, the researcher surveyed 73 managers, conducted in-depth interviews with 12 managers, and completed an organizational records review of e-mail messages sent and received. The quantitative data were analyzed using the Pearson cl1rrelation coefficient to discover relationships between each of three subscales: the presence and perceived value of e-mail, resistance to information technology, and the experience of information overload. An independent t-test examined the responses of men and women. Those data revealed no statistically significant relationships between …

Aggressive Personality: When Does It Develop And Why?, Rita Cantrell Schellenberg Jan 2000

Aggressive Personality: When Does It Develop And Why?, Rita Cantrell Schellenberg

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this review, three primary agents of social learning (parent-child interaction, peer interaction and television) are examined in relation to the development of aggressive personality during the formative years (infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence). Research has revealed all three agents as influential in the development of aggression, with the majority of research emphasizing middle childhood as a critical period for peer relationships. This paper suggests that the success or failure of peer relationships during middle childhood is a direct reflection of the social learning that took place during parent-infant and early childhood interactions. Hence, each stage, infancy through …

Adult Attachment Styles And Psychopathology In A Clinical Sample, Gary A. Sibcy Jan 2000

Adult Attachment Styles And Psychopathology In A Clinical Sample, Gary A. Sibcy

Faculty Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between a self-report measure of adult attachment and a self-report measure of psychopathology. Sixty-one outpatients and fourteen acute inpatients were administered the Experiences in Close Relationships (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) questionnaire and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory--3 rd Edition (Millon, 1994), along with a basic demographics questionnaire. Results indicated that only ten percent of the participants were classified as secure while ninety percent were insecure. Relative to the secure group, both preoccupied and fearful attachment styles reported significantly higher levels of overall psychopathology, especially in regard to personality dysfunction. Moreover, when compared head-to-head with …

Morphometric Variation As An Indicator Of Genetic Interactions Between Black-Capped And Carolina Chickadees At A Contact Zone In The Appalachian Mountains, Gene D. Sattler, Michael J. Braun Jan 2000

Morphometric Variation As An Indicator Of Genetic Interactions Between Black-Capped And Carolina Chickadees At A Contact Zone In The Appalachian Mountains, Gene D. Sattler, Michael J. Braun

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We studied hybridization and introgression between Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina (P. carolinensis) chickadees along two transects in the Appalachians using four genetic markers and multivariate analysis of morphology. Genetic data revealed that at least 58% of the birds in the center of each transect were of mixed ancestry and that recombinant genotypes predominated among hybrids, demonstrating that hybridization is frequent and that many hybrids are fertile. Genetic clines generally were steep and coincident in position, but introgression was evident well beyond the range interface. Introgression was higher at the one autosomal locus surveyed than in mitochondrial DNA or in …

Pastoral Evangelism: A Model For Effective Evangelism As Demonstrated By The Ministries Of John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, And John William Jones In The Revival Of The Army Of Northern Virginia In 1863, William E. Brown

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to present the effectiveness of a pastoral evangelism methodology. John Albert Broadus, Alfred Elijah Dickinson, and John William Jones exemplified this methodology while ministering in the camps of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Chapter one explains the research parameters and introduces the historical epoch of Broadus's, Dickinson's, and Jones's army camp ministry. The revival occurred at the end of a transitional period in American revivalism. The chapter surveys sociological, theological, and denominational events in the period 1840-1861 which influenced the men's formation in ministry. This covers the period of the childhood of Broadus, Dickinson, …

Giving Attention To Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, John C. Thomas Aug 1999

Giving Attention To Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, John C. Thomas

Faculty Publications and Presentations

ADHD is one of the most prevalent childhood health concerns, affecting between three and five percent of children. Even though it is so common, it is one of the most misunderstood problems and has caused both parents and children much needless pain and guilt. Sadly, parents of ADHD children are more likely to find criticism and rejection than support and help.

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors Apr 1999

Single Parent Ministry In The Local Church, William A. Connors

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This project in ministry titled, "Single Parent Ministry in the Local Church," is the result of the author's concern for the unique issues faced by today's ever increasing single parent households. This relatively new phenomenon is discussed in light of the historical roots of singleness in general. It is then shown that this "new phenomenon" is really not new at all. Single Parenting is virtually as old as creation itself, going back to the first single parent described in the Bible, Hagar. Much instruction regarding the circumstances of the single parent is discussed. The paper then examines the various, specific …

Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii Mar 1999

Religion And Mental Health: What Are Virginia Minister's Perceptions Of Counseling And Psychology, Clay E. Peters, Ii

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to ascertain which, if any, variables would effect how a minister felt about counseling and psychology, and what impact this may have on the possibility that he or she would refer to secular counselors for those in their congregations who are having difficulties beyond the pastor's expertise. The study investigated this possibility by examining the following variables: age, pastoral experience, educational level, and the amount of psychology class credits that a minister had in training. In addition, it sought to determine what influence a minister's theological belief and his or her denomination had on …
