Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa
Accessory To Genocide? An Exploration Of America’S Response To The Holocaust, Amanda Jean Costa
Senior Honors Theses
In considering America's reaction to the Holocaust, scholars must address serious charges that America bears some culpability for what happened. A survey of prominent historical studies and contemporary documents such as newspaper articles, committee reports, and other government documents prove America had some knowledge of the Holocaust, but did little in response. Considering the United States' knowledge of the situation in Germany, America's restrictive immigration policy in the 1930s makes her at least partially responsible for some of the lives lost. Other measures to stop the Holocaust, such as rescue, ransom, or bombing attempts, would not have been feasible or …
Embedding: A Brief Historical Overview And Contemporary Analysis Of Journalists' External And Internal Struggles With War Reporting, Matthew Hegarty
Embedding: A Brief Historical Overview And Contemporary Analysis Of Journalists' External And Internal Struggles With War Reporting, Matthew Hegarty
Senior Honors Theses
American war reporting today, specifically in the Iraq War, differs in many ways from past American military conflicts - not only in technology available to reporters, but in today's reporting philosophies. This thesis maintains that, for war reporters, "objective coverage" is essentially impossible. To support this claim, the thesis examines war reporting historically in the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Iraq War. The thesis also studies the oft-tumultuous relationship between the troops and the press and analyzes the struggles of war correspondents in maintaining objectivity as they dealt with internal conflict and external censorship.
Finally, the thesis …
Creating A Crisis: The Diem Coup As An American Construction, Glen Emmett Koch, Ii
Creating A Crisis: The Diem Coup As An American Construction, Glen Emmett Koch, Ii
Senior Honors Theses
On May 8, 1963, the South Vietnamese Civil Guard killed eight Buddhists who had protested the ban on flying the Buddhist flag. Events such as this ignited a political confrontation between the Buddhists and the South Vietnamese government. Although practicing Buddhists did not make up a majority of the population, they effectively enflamed the Vietnamese people against Ngo Dinh Diem, the president of South Vietnam, and captured the attention of the American news media by staging sacrificial suicides, hunger strikes, and street protests. The United States tried to convince Diem to make some concessions to the Buddhists, but their powers …

Towards An Effective Christian Cross-Cultural Youth Training Model: A Youth Ministry International Case Study, Jeddy Katule Kaleli
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This project is an attempt to explore the indispensable components of an effective Christian cross-cultural youth training model within the context of contemporary youth culture. Taking Youth Ministry International training philosophy as a case study, it analyzes it from an African Christian perspective within the framework of Biblical, anthropological and missiological perspectives. The study has revealed that an effective Christian cross-cultural youth training model must take seriously the cultures in which others live without compromising the authority of Biblical absolutes.

High School Athletic Eligibility Policies: A Mixed-Methods Study Of The Perspectives Of Public School Athletic Directors, Harlie G. Miller
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
High school students in North Carolina public schools must meet academic eligibility requirements in order to compete on school sponsored teams. While all districts must follow the state association guidelines, local education agencies may elect to create policies that are more rigorous. This mixed-methods study investigated the impact of the academic eligibility policies on high school campuses. The research relied heavily upon interviews with high school athletic directors, but also analyzed measures of student academic success. Interviewees were male and female, white and African-American. They had varied years of experience, and were from schools that were different geographically and demographically, …

Roger Scruton: The West And The Rest Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson
Roger Scruton: The West And The Rest Study Guide, Steven Alan Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In The West and the Rest, Scruton examines the clash between two civilizations: Islam and the West. He contrasts the dynamic, highly institutionalized, but increasingly decadent secular legal tradition of the West, which promotes such ideas as citizenship, corporate personality, and territorial jurisdiction, with the backward-looking but unified vision of a universal community associated with the Koran. One thing that troubles the relationship of these two civilizations today is a crisis of confidence in the West, which has produced a nihilistic, self-condemning “culture of repudiation.” This countercultural solvent has been infiltrating the flood of cultural byproducts of the West that …

Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to discover if and how dance communicates vital plot and character information nonverbally. The example analyzed was the film Singin’ in the Rain. This thesis examined the six dance sequences in the film to determine if the dancing is an integral, powerful, and significant communicative addition to the film. Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was used in conjunction with Seymour Chatman’s concept of kernels and satellites to determine if the dances communicated significantly to the film’s viewers. The Narrative Paradigm, though loosely framed, provided the concepts of coherence and fidelity. These concepts helped determine if …
The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes
The Integration Of Church And Home: A Strategic Partnership For Spiritual Formation, Michael B. Haynes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The American family is deteriorating according to current research. This deterioration stems from the church’s inability to develop Christians who practice life according to the principles of the Bible. In a culture characterized by an atomic worldview, the church and family must work together to develop Christians who live according to the relational worldview of Scripture. This project describes how one church developed and implemented a strategy partnering the church and family for the spiritual formation of the next generation. This project is designed as a model for churches seeking to impact the culture one home at a time.

This educational reform which attempts to raise the quality of education across the nation has been implemented locally through the Virginia Standards of Learning. The Standards of Learning framework highlights the necessity of proficient communication for the sake of the future ambitions of students. Such an objective has been attained through grammatical instruction of Standard English integrated within the language arts. Although …
Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith
Christian Libraries For The Next Generation: Expanding Access To Evangelical Literature, Gregory A. Smith
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent changes in the world of information present unique challenges and opportunities for the dissemination of evangelical literature. This report suggests six ways that the Association of Christian Librarians can support evangelical education and scholarship in a context that is increasingly global, Web-based, and free from the confines of the traditional college campus. Implementing a combination of these strategies could make evangelical literature much more accessible via the Web, the dominant delivery platform of our day. However, choices among available strategies must take account of competition within the marketplace.
