Others First: A Visual Roadmap 4 Transformation, Toby D. Wagoner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Small rural churches tend to have an inward-focus mindset fueled by the need for self-preservation and survival. This transactional ministry mindset negatively impacts sharing the love of Christ with others, culminating in apathetic attitudes toward church functionality. The problem this DMin action research project sought to address is the inward focus of First Baptist Church of Ravenswood members. The church needs to improve its evangelism and discipleship efforts, embrace sharing their love of Christ with others, begin engaging guests on a meaningful level, and consider facility upgrades. Members were reminded of the importance of demonstrating their love of Christ to …

Investigating Antimicrobial Properties Released From Developing Amphibian Eggs, Olivia Grimsley
Investigating Antimicrobial Properties Released From Developing Amphibian Eggs, Olivia Grimsley
Liberty University Research Week
Early amphibian development often occurs in a hostile environment, abundant with potential predators and pathogens. While it is known that amphibian eggs are protected physically by 5-8 layers of glycoprotein jelly, additional protection mechanisms used against water pathogens are largely unknown. Previous research in our lab has indicated that amphibian eggs exhibit a unique microbiome on the egg surface which is distinct from the surrounding environment. This uniqueness may indicate defensive, rather than offensive, resistance by developing eggs to microbes. A recent series of experiments in our lab to observe a defensive/offensive response have not provided clarity. This project is …

The Effect Of Post-Translational Modifications Of Irs-1 On Insulin Sensitivity, John Zelenka
The Effect Of Post-Translational Modifications Of Irs-1 On Insulin Sensitivity, John Zelenka
Liberty University Research Week
Over 500 million people worldwide, including 36 million Americans, are affected by type II diabetes, a metabolic disease characterized by insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Complications associated with this disease include but are not limited to retinopathy, cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, and nephropathy. One of the major causes of insulin resistance stems from the protein IRS-1’s insensitivity to activate downstream events when insulin binds to its receptor. Although there are numerous proteins that downregulate IRS-1 through serine phosphorylation, p300, a broad histone acetyltransferase responsible for the regulation of hundreds of transcriptions factors, can also inhibit IRS-1 through acetylation. Recent studies revealed that …

The Relationship Between Social Media Usage, Loneliness, And Mindfulness In College Students, Edward Cook
Liberty University Research Week
In recent years, both social media usage and loneliness have been increasing for young adults. While previous work has revealed a relationship between social media usage and loneliness among young adults, the purpose of the current study is to examine if mindfulness mediates this relationship and if different types of social media engagement moderate this relationship. We hypothesize that higher social media usage will be related to higher loneliness, which will be mediated by lower mindfulness, and that specific types of social media engagement will moderate the relationship between higher social media usage and higher loneliness. Participants will complete a …
