The Imminent Crisis Of Deepfake Porn, Elaine Webb
The Imminent Crisis Of Deepfake Porn, Elaine Webb
Liberty University Research Week
This paper examines the causes, effects, and proposes solutions to the current crisis of deepfake porn. Deepfake Porn has been defined by The Guardian in April of 2023 as synthetically created pornography. Dutch AI company, Sensity, concluded in 2023 that 96% of deepfake videos online are pornographic. Female celebrities have historically been the victim of deepfake porn but its newest target is the everyday person. This exploitation is unacceptable and means that nonconsensual sex is no longer limited to the physical realm. The two main causes of deepfake porn are toxic pornographic culture and unrestricted technological advancement in the modern …
Media Impact On Stereotypes: How The Media Feeds The Bias Beast, Emma Campbell
Media Impact On Stereotypes: How The Media Feeds The Bias Beast, Emma Campbell
Liberty University Research Week
This project examines the ways in which news media perpetuates inaccurate stereotypes, different methods of diminishing stereotyping on a psychological level, and proposes an adaptation of these strategies to be applied in the news media industry. It is well documented that the media industry frequently feeds stereotypic images rather than diminishing them, even if unintentionally. Stereotypic portrayals in the media can have real-world impacts on the people or groups unfairly treated. These impacts range from influencing interpersonal interactions to influencing public policy that affects those subjected to stereotyping. Existing research has primarily examined the psychological processes of stereotyping and how …
Evita: The Unassuming Rise Of Argentina's Most Beloved First Lady, Adaline Nolley
Evita: The Unassuming Rise Of Argentina's Most Beloved First Lady, Adaline Nolley
Liberty University Research Week
Born in the rural town of Los Toldos, Argentina, Eva María Duarte was not the heiress to great wealth, fame, or success. The illegitimate daughter of a wealthy farmer, Eva was often overlooked and shunned by siblings and citizens of her town. Her rise to fame as one of Argentina’s most renowned historic figures was unprecedented, and it did not follow the acceptable patterns of her time nor those of other great Latin American heroes. From rumors of a romantic relationship with a dashing guitarist to her fateful move to the city of Buenos Aires and her marriage to the …
Smoldering Fire On The Mountain: The Wider Context Of The Battle Of Blair Mountain, Benjamin Grist
Smoldering Fire On The Mountain: The Wider Context Of The Battle Of Blair Mountain, Benjamin Grist
Liberty University Research Week
The Battle of Blair Mountain was the largest labor uprising in American history, and the climactic end to the West Virginia Coal Wars. Most modern scholars focus on the events in the year leading up to the battle. This is understandable, as a gunfight between a union-sympathizing sheriff and company-back detectives is a thrilling event to begin a book or journal article with and acts as a good starting point to explain year-long escalation that ended with the military being called in to put down the uprising. However, the West Virginia Coal Wars were not simply those events leading up …
Unveiling The Power Of Hitler's Propaganda: Examining The Impact Of The Propaganda Of Adolf Hitler And The Nazi Regime On The Nation Before And During World War Ii, Chandra Waller
Liberty University Research Week
This presentation examines the power and impact of the propaganda of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime through a variety of methods that were implemented via the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Shortly after seizing power in 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Regime quickly established the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under the leadership of Joseph Goebbels. The Ministry created a propaganda program which was designed to appeal to the sense of national identity or nationalism, the aspirations, and the fear and weaknesses of various groups of the population. To ensure their message was being …
Shifting Of The Nerves: The Evolution Of Shell Shock And Its Treatment In The United Kingdom, Dylan Cumbo
Shifting Of The Nerves: The Evolution Of Shell Shock And Its Treatment In The United Kingdom, Dylan Cumbo
Liberty University Research Week
This paper looks at the evolution of the British understanding of a new Psycho-neurological condition assigned the common name of ‘Shell Shock.’ I argue that the understanding of Shell Shock within the United Kingdom underwent a gradual evolution due to influences from both the British military and medical personnel. Conditions similar to Shell Shock have been observed throughout history, with the first modern interpretation appearing shortly after the American Civil War. Despite this, medical practitioners within the United Kingdom held onto their older interpretations of psychological medicine. Thus, Shell Shock came as a surprise to those who first witnessed it. …
Shadow Mimicking The Darkness: Hans Asperger’S Relation To National Socialism, Dylan Cumbo
Shadow Mimicking The Darkness: Hans Asperger’S Relation To National Socialism, Dylan Cumbo
Liberty University Research Week
This paper looks at the personal and professional relationship between Hans Asperger, a psychiatrist during the Second World War in Nazi-controlled Austria, and the National Socialist movement. I argue that while Hans Asperger had a mixed relationship with National Socialism, he unarguably played a role in implementing its policies and was found to have been cooperative with the Nazi’s agenda by the SS. Influenced by his family, faith, and childhood experiences, Asperger’s background led him to become active within the medical field. During his time within the clinic at Vienna, Asperger rapidly rose the ranks thanks to the dismissal of …
The Most Innovative Technology: The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, Elaine Webb
The Most Innovative Technology: The Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, Elaine Webb
Liberty University Research Week
The Mayo Clinic reported in February 2019 that the Da Vinci robot surgical system is one of the more prominent and important surgical devices today. However, it is seldom discussed in circles outside of the medical realm. This presentation discusses how this revolutionary machine was designed to facilitate complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. This revolutionary aspect is Doctors Moll and Young’s three main components: the vision cart, the surgeon console, and the patient cart. This presentation explains the fundamentals of these components and how they have been both beneficial to surgeries and may malfunction, harming patients. Additionally, this …
Improper Divulgence: How Distrust And Poor Reporting Influenced Civilians Views Of The Three Mile Island Incident, Dylan Cumbo
Improper Divulgence: How Distrust And Poor Reporting Influenced Civilians Views Of The Three Mile Island Incident, Dylan Cumbo
Liberty University Research Week
This paper looks at how the media impacted the civilian opinion of the United States’ population on the Three Mile Island Incident. I argue that the media outlets reporting on the nuclear incident negatively impacted the public’s perception of the incident, making the disaster appear far worse than what was actually happening. Occurring on March 28, 1979, the meltdown of reactor number two at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, was the worst nuclear incident in United States history. Prior to the meltdown, United States citizens already had exposure to the pros and cons of radiation. Influenced by their experiences with nuclear …
The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce
The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce
Liberty University Research Week
The ancient Romans were fascinated by spectacles of blood on the sands of the arena. Thousands of citizens flocked from all corners of the empire to see gladiators test their mettle against beasts and men alike. Films and popular culture have portrayed the arena as a ruthless blood bowl that one could only leave as a bloody pulp or a savage victor. While by modern standards, the arena can be seen as quite brutal and dangerous, this image of the games leaves an incomplete picture in the minds of many. Several misconceptions, born from popular media, ignore the scale of …
Bridging Biblical Beliefs And Behaviors: Historical And Cultural Influence Of Machismo In Latin America, Kimberly Weaner
Bridging Biblical Beliefs And Behaviors: Historical And Cultural Influence Of Machismo In Latin America, Kimberly Weaner
Liberty University Research Week
Stemming from the Spanish word “macho”, Machismo is a social construct of an exaggerated sense of masculinity that is common across Latin American and Spanish culture. Machismo is typically associated with negative aspects. This research paper seeks to explore the historical and cultural influence of machismo culture in Latin America to find the intersection between machismo and Christianity. Machismo impacts how both men and women behave, speak, and interact with one another. Machismo has a multifaced history within Latin America, spanning its origin from pre-colonial times to contemporary. Beginning with an exploration of pre-colonial gender roles and their evolution during …
"We Do Not Make Pacts With Communists": The Evolving Rhetoric Of Argentine President Javier Milei In Relation To China, Sawyer Deshon
"We Do Not Make Pacts With Communists": The Evolving Rhetoric Of Argentine President Javier Milei In Relation To China, Sawyer Deshon
Liberty University Research Week
This presentation analyzes the rhetoric of current Argentinian head-of-state Javier Milei—who was recently elected president in November of 2023—in relation to China. Chinese investment in Latin America has grown tremendously since the turn of the millennium, demonstrated by the exponential increase in commerce due in large part to a number of Beijing-aligned, left-leaning Latin American governments. Though his predecessor Alberto Fernández had accepted an invitation to join the BRICS trading bloc, whose most prominent member is China, the “liberal libertarian” Javier Milei maintained an aggressive stance against China during his campaign and subsequently declined the invitation. Despite these combative initial …
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
The Need For Standardized Training For Volunteer Healthcare Chaplains, Dominic Anthony Korzecki
Masters Theses
For the past 50 years, many studies have examined the effects of Spiritual Care in medical environments. Though these studies have helped support the legitimacy and necessity for the presence of spiritual care in medicine, a lack of attention has been given to the level of professionalism of those who have been granted permission to administer care. The objective of my thesis is to determine the following: 1) if medical organizations that utilize volunteer-only spiritual care programs for their patients, and families, provide the same level of care as ones staffed by trained professionals, 2) if volunteer-only chaplaincy programs generate …
Unmasking The Holder Of The Purse Strings: Countering Chinese Economic Coercion In The Indo-Pacific, Rachel L. Davis
Unmasking The Holder Of The Purse Strings: Countering Chinese Economic Coercion In The Indo-Pacific, Rachel L. Davis
Senior Honors Theses
The Indo-Pacific is a key focal point of U.S.-China competition due to its geographical, economic, and military significance. China is using political warfare to achieve its strategic goals in the region, influencing other nations to align with its interests. Economic coercion is a key tool of this warfare. This is evident in the Pacific Islands, among America’s treaty allies, in Southeast Asia, and in South Asia. To prove itself the superior partner, maintain access to key points of land, and keep the Indo-Pacific open for trade, the U.S. must counter China’s activities. This can be achieved via a stronger economic …

Exploring The Role Of Curricular Engagement In The Secondary English Classroom: A Case Study, Kelsey Leah Baldwin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Educational engagement is an issue that has become problematic due to the many changes that have occurred since COVID, including technological dependency and teacher burnout. Teachers may need more skills to manage and implement engagement strategies in the classroom setting. Understanding educators’ experiences with classroom engagement in a variety of secondary English classrooms is the setting of this case study. The central research question explores how educators experience student engagement in their classrooms. The theory guiding this study is Bandura’s social cognitive theory, as I utilize the theory to examine behaviors affected by people and the classroom environment. This research …

Provider Education And Nicotine Cessation: An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Madison Riley-Glenn
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Nearly 3.08 million U.S. middle and high school students use some form of nicotine. Additionally, it was estimated that 28.3 million adults in the United States smoke cigarettes. Current prescribers lack the comprehensive knowledge that is involved with nicotine cessation therapy. Nicotine addiction is recognized as a complex disease process, but instrumental opportunities exist to help patients quit this addictive substance. Providers were educated on nicotine cessation modalities that varied from pharmacotherapies to non-pharmacotherapy options. The project implemented an educational intervention for providers at two primary care offices, increasing confidence in providing patients with the best cessation therapy. A pretest …
Our Enemy, The State: Liberty Versus Power On The American Home Front During The First World War, Michael Schearer
Our Enemy, The State: Liberty Versus Power On The American Home Front During The First World War, Michael Schearer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
World War I marked a significant shift in the structure and practice of the federal government. The key feature of this shift was the centralization of national power in the federal government and a burgeoning bureaucracy. This increase in the centralization of power led to an escalation of conflicts between the expanded assertions of national power and the civil liberties of American citizens. While this relationship between state power and civil liberties has been the focus of extensive scholarly research, much less has been written about a mostly forgotten perspective that viewed war as destructive to human flourishing beyond the …

A Comparison Of Student Motivation Between Two Ukulele Curricula In A Multi-Age Classroom, Jill K. Moth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Motivation is a topic of high interest to music educators as they attempt to understand what makes their students want to continue learning. The use of the ukulele in the music classroom has grown over the last ten years due to its versatility. Despite its popularity and music educators’ support for its use, very little research exists on students’ motivation while playing it in a general music classroom setting. Therefore, the purpose of this current study is to compare the motivation levels of two groups of multi-age fourth through sixth-grade students learning the ukulele via different curricula in the music …
An Examination Of The Parental Role In The Discipleship Of Children, Robert B. Jarman
An Examination Of The Parental Role In The Discipleship Of Children, Robert B. Jarman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Parents have an enormous role in the lives of their children. They are responsible for all aspects of their children’s development to prepare them to manage adulthood successfully. Parents invest much of their time in many important areas of the home, yet regarding discipleship, they will often pass on that responsibility to others or neglect it altogether. The danger of a lack of discipleship in the home is that it can potentially contribute to the growing trend of young adults leaving the faith. This thesis project examines the Biblical mandate for parents discipling their children, the reasons for parents not …
