Arguments From Evil And The Parenting Style(S) Of God, Kyle Dean Gazlay May 2020

Arguments From Evil And The Parenting Style(S) Of God, Kyle Dean Gazlay

Masters Theses

In scholarly debates there are two primary positions on whether a God who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent can coexist with the presence of evil in the world. Atheists claim that God and evil do not coexist, while theists proclaim that God and evil can and do coexist. Atheists have used arguments from evil as a chief weapon against the existence of God and evil. Within arguments from evil, atheists create arguments that take an evidential or probabilistic stance on the matter. These arguments are called evidential arguments from evil. The evidential arguments from evil will use parent analogies to …

A Causal-Comparative Study Investigating Differences In Cultural Intelligence Levels Of College Faculty, Annik A. Miller

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In this age of globalization, colleges need to ensure that their students be able to function effectively across cultures upon graduation. This ability is referred to as Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and is comprised of four subfactors: Metacognitive, Cognitive, Motivational, and Behavioral CQ. Faculty play an important role in getting students exposed to the cross-cultural experiences and thoughts needed to develop CQ, yet little is known about the faculty’s CQ levels. The purpose of this study with a quantitative causal-comparative cross-sectional research design was to determine if the undergraduate faculty members in this convenience sample have differing levels of CQ between …

The Effect Of Teacher-Team Generated Formative Assessments On Student Writing Achievement Test Levels, Justin Michael Calhoun

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Formative assessment has been studied for the last 2 decades. Increased high-stakes accountability requirements have intensified the focus on preparing students to demonstrate increased achievement on end-of-course summative tests. Districts have turned to common formative assessments as a means to increase student achievement on end-of-course testing. Therefore, more study was needed to determine if common formative assessments lead to increased students’ achievement on summative writing assessments. This causal-comparative study examined two groups of eleventh-grade students to determine if any differences existed between student achievement scores on teacher-created formative assessments and common formative assessments created by teacher teams. Data were gathered …

Race, Ethnicity & Culture With Purpose: The Growth Of A Multicultural Church Ministry, Jamar R. Mabry May 2020

Race, Ethnicity & Culture With Purpose: The Growth Of A Multicultural Church Ministry, Jamar R. Mabry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Christianity is a major galvanizing factor. However, it is prudent to pay attention to the real and latent divisions in society that hinder social harmony: even without the calming effect of the Christian faith. Attempting to form a multicultural church must therefore involve an understanding of the races and ethnicities that comprise the target population. That process is as academic as it is pragmatic. The academic aspect of conceiving race involves a historically literate understanding of the heritage and factors that created the present race and ethnic power relations not only in the locale: but across the entire country as …

The Implications Of New Historicism For Evangelical Bible Interpretation: An Evaluation, Drake Deornellis Apr 2020

The Implications Of New Historicism For Evangelical Bible Interpretation: An Evaluation, Drake Deornellis

Senior Honors Theses

The twentieth century has seen a rise in recognizing the Bible not only as historical or theological work but also as a piece of literature, and the natural progression of this idea is to apply the same methods used for literary texts to the biblical text. However, many movements in literary studies seem antithetical to evangelical ideas of interpretation, as the goal of evangelical interpretation is always to find God’s intended meaning for the text. This thesis will explore the features of one literary theory, New Historicism, as presented in Practicing New Historicism, and ask if this theory can be …

Khmer Phonetics & Phonology: Theoretical Implications For Esl Instruction, Alex Donley

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis develops an approach to English teaching for Khmer-speaking students that centers on Khmer phonetics and phonology. Cambodia has a strong demand for English instruction, but consistently underperforms next to other nations in terms of proficiency. A significant reason for Cambodia’s skill gap is the lack of research into linguistic hurdles Khmer speakers face when learning English. This paper aims to bridge Khmer and English with an understanding of the speech systems that both languages use before turning to the unique challenges Khmer speakers must overcome based on the tenets of L1 Transfer Theory. It closes by outlining strategies …

Aliteracy To Literacy: An Applied Research Study To Solve Elementary Readers' Aliteracy Problems, Brian Kirk Buis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this applied research study was to solve the problem of aliteracy for upper elementary readers at an after-school program, Smith Academy (a pseudonym), and to design a reading program to address the problem. Offering high-interest books to children who are reading below grade level could stimulate their enjoyment of reading and increase the amount of reading that they do. The more a person practices any skill, the better he or she becomes at it. The benefits of reading are well-documented, yet many children become either non-readers or reluctant readers by the end of elementary school. By addressing …

"Members One Of Another": Heteroglossic Utterances As Critiques Of Injustice In Charles Dickens’S Bleak House, Cale Baker Mar 2020

"Members One Of Another": Heteroglossic Utterances As Critiques Of Injustice In Charles Dickens’S Bleak House, Cale Baker

Masters Theses

Charles Dickens often dealt with societal injustice within his work, and he often used the different languages—the language of the poor, the rich, the religious, the political—of various social strata to expose the disparity between the high and the low social classes. Within Bleak House, Dickens inserts different voices common to Victorian London through his third-person narrator to highlight the upper class oppression of the poor. To see Dickens’s insertion of these different voices, I use Mikhail Bakhtin’s work on heteroglossia and dialogism as a framework for understanding how Dickens inserts these different voices to specifically expose injustice. Additionally, I …

In a nation mired in racial violence, how can African American churches reach the divided communities with the love of Jesus Christ? What methods can African American pastors use to enlighten their communities and seek racial unity within the greater community? How can African American pastors share this single truth with their communities: As long as America is divided by racial bigotry, economic disparity, and cultural indifference, every citizen is injured, and our nation is bound to fail. Although similar questions are asked nationwide, this thesis focuses on the perspectives of African American pastors and their churches from the Gullah …

Like many other forms of knowledge, cultural intelligence (CQ) is acquired or learned. Our study uses the CQ scale as a means of measuring growth in cultural intelligence in students participating in a two-month home-stay in Guatemala. Based on this data, we selected students to interview as a way of discovering specifically in what areas they grew the most and why they think they experienced CQ growth. As a result of these interviews, we have pinpointed three key areas of growth that will be the focus of this post presentation: a shift from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation, a rejection of …

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones Jan 2020

Youth Decline In Church Growth And Attendance, Marion Diane Jones

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Youth attendance in the church has declined in the recent past. The reason for their decline is that they no longer find a church to be socially and spiritually relevant to their lives. The paper seeks to provide a solution to the problem through spiritual formation and increasing the depth of youth programs so that they can remain socially relevant to the lives of the young people. This will be done by encouraging youth people to know who Jesus is and how to have a personal relationship with him through faith.

Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat Dec 2019

Learning From The Past To Educate The Future: An Analysis Of The Modern Classical School, Miranda Boljat

Senior Honors Theses

Classical schooling combines the wisdom of thousands of years of learning with the knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s world. Despite the antiquity of some of these ideas, the movement has continued to grow in both number of schools and also number of students attending, measuring almost 100 new schools each decade since 1993. One of the motives for this growth is how Classical schools utilize a curriculum which includes the trivium, Latin, and the Great Books of Western Civilization. Together, these elements of the curriculum lead to improved test scores and general college readiness.
