The Effect Of Markedness On Korean L2 Learners’ Pronunciation Of The English /L/ And /R/, Johannah Lovett Jan 2009

The Effect Of Markedness On Korean L2 Learners’ Pronunciation Of The English /L/ And /R/, Johannah Lovett

Senior Honors Theses

The complex process of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a challenge for linguists to explain. One perspective, the Markedness Principle, states that certain language characteristics are not as common cross-linguistically. For example, the coda position in syllables occurs less universally in languages. Linking this with the well-known difficulty that native Korean speakers typically face with the English phonemes /l/ and /r/, the hypothesis states that pronouncing these sounds is most challenging in the coda. An experiment is designed to embed nonsense words containing /l/ and /r/ in a story, which is recorded as the subjects read aloud. The hypothesis is …

Multiple Pre-Nominal Adjective Usages By Asian L2 Learners Of English, Sarah D. Mcmahon Dec 2008

Multiple Pre-Nominal Adjective Usages By Asian L2 Learners Of English, Sarah D. Mcmahon

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on adjective ordering in the English language, particularly in how it affects Asian ESL students’ grasp on English grammar. In order to complete the thesis, research was done comparing the aforementioned ESL students’ handling of pre-nominal adjective placement with that of generally accepted English adjective order. This was used for the following reasons: (i) to identify whether adjective placement is innate or learned; (ii) to discover common errors made by ESL students in adjective ordering; and (iii) to show that the findings may, upon extension, be used to implement ESL curriculum.

A Comparative Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Biblical Worldview Among High School Students In The American Association Of Christian Schools Of Georgia, North Carolina, And South Carolina, Michael Hugh Bryant Dec 2008

A Comparative Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Biblical Worldview Among High School Students In The American Association Of Christian Schools Of Georgia, North Carolina, And South Carolina, Michael Hugh Bryant

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This non-experimental quantitative study is a comparative analysis of factors contributing to the biblical worldview of students attending select Christian schools in the states of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The research design uses non-randomized control groups, an instrument which includes original questions in addition to items from three other instruments, and a Likert-type scale. Results imply that the subjects appear to consistently reflect orthodox doctrine in their responses, if not always in their behavior. The subjects were homogenous in many of their answers even though there were particular questions that evoked a wide disparity of answers. The particular …

The Academic Needs Of The Native Spanish-Speaking English Language Learner Under The No Child Left Behind Act (Nclb), Amy J. Whicker Nov 2008

The Academic Needs Of The Native Spanish-Speaking English Language Learner Under The No Child Left Behind Act (Nclb), Amy J. Whicker

Senior Honors Theses

The instructional demands and pressures placed on today’s educators are constantly increasing, influenced by national and state learning standards, assessments, and changing student demographics. More specifically, the standards of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) set by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) require academic gains to be made yearly by all students, including those with significant learning hurdles, such as the language acquisition difficulties faced by English Language Learners (ELLs). While the future of the NCLB Act is debatable, the necessity of effective classroom arrangements and instructional methods is indubitable. In addition, because the majority of this ELL population is …

A Comparison Study Of Remediation Services Offered To Latino Students In The Primary Grades, Melissa Harold Lannom Nov 2008

A Comparison Study Of Remediation Services Offered To Latino Students In The Primary Grades, Melissa Harold Lannom

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This comparative study was designed to assess the efficacy of Reading A-Z, an online reading program with differentiated reading levels from kindergarten to sixth grade, on first through third grade Latino students. Ten Virginia elementary schools in a single school district participated in this study of tutoring services offered to low-performing, Spanish-speaking students. Increases in individual instructional reading levels (IRL) and word recognition in isolation (WRI), as measured by Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) assessment, were documented using pretest scores collected in fall 2007 with posttest scores collected in spring 2008. An independent t-test was used to determine if differences …

An Analysis Of The Inter-Dependency Of The Prominent Motifs Within The Book Of Qohelet, Richard Alan Fuhr, Jr. Oct 2008

An Analysis Of The Inter-Dependency Of The Prominent Motifs Within The Book Of Qohelet, Richard Alan Fuhr, Jr.

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation analyses and evaluates the seven most prominent motifs in the book of Qohelet with a view towards demonstrating the inter-dependency between these motifs. As each motif is evaluated in light of its relationship to other prominent motifs, a balanced approach to Qohelet is reached.

Chapter one presents an introduction to the background issues vital to Qohelet studies, along with a survey of current approaches and the presuppositions from which my own analysis of Qohelet will be taken. Chapter 2 begins the evaluation of motifs, focusing on the problem, or "dilemma" of hevel and Qohelet's quest to find a …

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard Oct 2008

Existential Temporality As Fore-Ignorance: Implications For Divine Foreknowledge, David Pensgard

Masters Theses

Investigation into the nature of time is commonly taken to be a necessary precursor to the study of God's temporal status. These studies involve metaphysical concerns within the philosophy of time that focus on the logical structure of tensed statements about the future. Taking a different approach, this paper investigates the nature of temporality, rather than time, and proceeds via a phenomenological methodology. This often-overlooked methodology, it is argued, is preeminent over the metaphysical methodology. When the results of the two methods conflict the phenomenological methodology should dominate discussion. Proceeding with the more powerful method, it is argued that temporality, …

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams Oct 2008

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams

Masters Theses

Parents are continually looking for correct and effective ways to discipline and instruct their children. Often, parents will tell a personal narrative beginning with “when I was your age” to demonstrate to their children the appropriate way to think and behave. This thesis asks three research questions: What are the common themes in parental narratives that young adults remember in relation to instruction or discipline? How does the narrative structure demonstrate narrative coherence and fidelity? What do young adults self-report about the impact of the parental narrative on their cognitive dissonance? Through a content analysis of eighty completed surveys by …

Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser Jul 2008

Does Deuteronomy 32:17 Assume Or Deny The Reality Of Other Gods?, Michael Heiser

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Deuteronomy 32, the Song of Moses, is well known among biblical scholars for its textual, linguistic, and translation difficulties. l Attention to Deut 32 has tended to focus on vv. 8-9, and 43 in light of fragments of those verses recovered at Qumran and their disagreement with the Masoretic Text (MT).' Though conceptually related to these verses and briefly discussed in commentaries, Deut 32.17 has received no concentrated attention in scholarly journals. Given the divergent ways the verse has been handled by Bible translators, Deut 32.17 deserves consideration.
