Anatomy Of Adults' Learning Experiences, Frederick Milacci, Ian Baptiste, Kristine Lalley, Honoratha Mushi Oct 2001

Anatomy Of Adults' Learning Experiences, Frederick Milacci, Ian Baptiste, Kristine Lalley, Honoratha Mushi

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, 4 researchers conduct phenomenological interviews to find out how adults describe their learning experiences and what meanings they attach to those descriptions. The study proposes common structural and functional features of adults' learning experiences, while noting important substantive differences between and among the participants interviewed. The study also raises questions concerning the differences between experiences in general and learning experiences in particular; between learning and performance; and it questions the meaning and validity of the construct, group learning. It also draws several implications regarding the teaching of adults. Lastly, it proposes a way to reconcile he apparent …

Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen Jul 2001

Dr. Darwin Meet The Great Physician, Alan L. Gillen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Darwinists have repeatedly used the terms “constrained” and “failing” physiology to describe our heart and blood vessels. After all, the leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Therefore, by Darwinian reasoning, the anatomical and physiological design of the circulatory system must be bad, and evolution in its randomness has given us a “raw” deal. This position is stated by Nesse and Williams (1995, p. 5), “Bones, physiology, the nervous system — the body has thousands of consummate designs that elicit our wonder and admiration. By contrast, however, many aspects …

Aluminum Inducted Apoptosis As A Model Of Neurodegeneration, Doug Strand Apr 2001

Aluminum Inducted Apoptosis As A Model Of Neurodegeneration, Doug Strand

Senior Honors Theses

The fundamental mechanism for cell loss in Alzheimer's disease is currently unknown although evidence has implicated an array of contributing factors including oxidative stress and apoptosis. Recently, the potentially critical role of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases has become increasingly compelling due to the analysis of the cascade if events preceding neuronal apoptosis. Previous studies have shown that the intracisternal administration of aluminum (A1) to aged white rabbits yields man biochemical and pathological similarities to Alzheimer's disease and further implicated apoptosis. The specific aim of this project was to develop an in vitro model that uses aluminum to trigger the …

The Transformation Of The Romanian Criminal Justice System, Stephen R. Bowers Apr 2001

The Transformation Of The Romanian Criminal Justice System, Stephen R. Bowers

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1989, Romanian freedom fighters liberated the nation from the yoke of an oppressive dictatorship. As a former communist state, Romania is charting a new course to expanding democracy and a market economy in Eastern Europe. This paper examines the current Romanian criminal justice system in the context of history, geography and government through an examination of the functions and legal framework controlling the three sub-systems (law enforcement, adjudication and corrections) and how youthful offenders are treated. The study finds a need to adopt more fully a systems perspective.

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu Jan 2001

Encyclopedia Of Jihad, Alexei Malashenko, Stephen R. Bowers, Valeria Ciobanu

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Western powers are the chief targets of a global Islamic jihad. Once believed to be a relic of history, the notion of Islamic jihad regained a political role in the 1980s. There are multiple meanings of the term jihad. While “great jihad” implies peaceful activity “small jihad” denotes the use of violence. There has never been a war in which Christians and Muslims have participated where the latter has not appealed to the slogan of holy war. The failure of Iran’s “white revolution” in 1979 set the stage for development of violent strategies against the West. The Chechen conflict …
