A Tutorial On Oxidative Stress And Redox Signaling With Application To Exercise And Sedentariness, Robert Buresh, Kris Berg
A Tutorial On Oxidative Stress And Redox Signaling With Application To Exercise And Sedentariness, Robert Buresh, Kris Berg
Faculty Articles
Oxidative stress has been shown to play a role in the etiology of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Free radicals and, most prominently, the superoxide radical, result from oxidative metabolism and several enzyme-catalyzed reactions, and endogenous cellular antioxidants dismutate many reactive oxygen species (ROS). Under certain conditions, ROS production can outpace dismutation (e.g., long-term sedentariness and positive energy balance) and the result is oxidative stress, with proteins, lipids, and DNA the most common targets of radicals. However, the molecules that contribute to oxidative stress also appear to participate in vital cell signaling activity that supports …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Perceived Leadership Behaviors, Perceived Team Cohesion And Team Performance, Alvin Miles
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
In an effort to help explain more of the variance in team performance, studies examining the effects of leadership upon team performance have included a limited number of contexts (Antonakis, Avolio and Sivasubramaniam, 2003; Tejada, Scandura and Pillai, 2001). This study is the first to empirically examine the relationship of leadership styles to team cohesion, and team cohesion to team performance utilizing the nine-factor version of the full range of leadership theory (transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and no leadership typologies) in the context of professional sports. Further, it empirically measures the perceptions of official members of the sports league ecosystem …

Susceptibility To Eating Disorders Among Collegiate Female Student-Athletes, Cherilyn N. Mclester, Robin Hardin, Stephanie Hoppe
Faculty Articles
Context: Research has suggested that the prevalence of young women with eating disorders (EDs) is increasing, but determining the exact prevalence of EDs within the female student-athlete (FS-A) population is difficult. Looking at certain traits may help us to identify their level of susceptibility to developing an ED. Objective: To determine the susceptibility of FS-As to EDs in relation to self-concept, including self-esteem and body image. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Athletic training and health centers at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I, II, and III institutions via e-mail questionnaire correspondence. Patients or Other Participants: A total of 439 FS-As from …

Comparing Student Performance And Satisfaction In Face-To-Face And Hybrid Formats For A Finance Course, Patricia R. Robertson
Comparing Student Performance And Satisfaction In Face-To-Face And Hybrid Formats For A Finance Course, Patricia R. Robertson
Faculty Articles
In a study conducted at a large, public university, the author assessed the impact of course delivery method (face-to-face versus hybrid formats) on student performance and satisfaction. The study was based on the concurrent instruction of a senior-level finance course over two semesters. Student performance was based on the percent of students achieving a grade of A, B or C in the course (as opposed to D, F or W/WF) and the scores on the individual gradable assignments. The study shows no significant difference between hybrid and face-to-face delivery in the mean score of student performance. In addition, there was …
Unaccustomed Exercise Causes Rhabdomyolysis, Yuri Feito
Unaccustomed Exercise Causes Rhabdomyolysis, Yuri Feito
Faculty Articles
Cross Fit TM is a relatively new strength and conditioning program defined as “constantly varied, functional movements, performed at a high intensity”. The goal of the program is to increase “work capacity across broad time and modal domains” [1]. Even though this training modality has been criticized by the main stream media for “high risk of injury” most of these claims have been anecdotal, as recent evidence suggest this training modality is not any more “dangerous” than other exercise programs [2]. One of the biggest criticisms of this training modality has been its association with Rhabdomyolysis, a condition that results …
Prevalence And Incidence Rates Are Not The Same: Letter To The Editor, Yuri Feito
Prevalence And Incidence Rates Are Not The Same: Letter To The Editor, Yuri Feito
Faculty Articles
I recently became aware of an article by Weisenthal et al,2 “Injury Rate and Patterns Among CrossFit Athletes,” published in the April 2014 issue of your journal. Considering this is a topic of interest to me, I read the article with great expectations and detail. I commend the authors for their fantastic job, both in their methodology as well as in their interpretation of their findings. They truly did a great job explaining their definition of what constituted an injury, which has been lacking in several studies, as well as providing great recommendations for the “safe” participation in this …

An Exploratory Model Of The Antecedent Factors Contributing To Fan Support/Attendance At Hbcu Basketball Games, George W. Stone, Kathryn T. Cort, Japhet Nkonge
An Exploratory Model Of The Antecedent Factors Contributing To Fan Support/Attendance At Hbcu Basketball Games, George W. Stone, Kathryn T. Cort, Japhet Nkonge
Atlantic Marketing Journal
The factors that impact attendance at sporting events in general and at small college sporting events in particular have been widely examined by sports marketing academicians. Among the various factors emerging over two decades has been attendance based on identity with individual teams and players, to idiosyncratic factors such as the environment and the entertainment value of the sporting event itself. Less is known, however, about what creates and promotes the desire to attend sporting events associated with historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’s). HBCU’s, like their other small college athletic departments, are now facing financial difficulties because of dwindling …
Infusing Disability Sport Into The Sport Management Curriculum, Deborah R. Shapiro, Brenda G. Pitts, Mary A. Hums, Jimmy Calloway
Infusing Disability Sport Into The Sport Management Curriculum, Deborah R. Shapiro, Brenda G. Pitts, Mary A. Hums, Jimmy Calloway
Faculty Articles
Disability sport is growing around the world with momentum and is described as a "movement" (Bailey, 2008; DePauw & Gavron, 2005). While there are more similarities than differences with sport management for able-bodied athletes and those with disabilities, there are additional needs and considerations for persons with disabilities (DePauw & Gavron, 2005). The noticeable visibility of individuals with disabilities in society, including sport, raises concerns about the degree to which sport management academic programs have modified their curricula to ensure that individuals working in the sport management field are prepared to deal with the uniqueness of disability sport. This paper …
Why The Master? Human Capital Development For Practicing U.S. Cycling Coaches, Daniel Larson, Joel Maxcy
Why The Master? Human Capital Development For Practicing U.S. Cycling Coaches, Daniel Larson, Joel Maxcy
Faculty Articles
The economic structure of the industry of cycling coaches has yet to be the subject of any apparent published inquiry. This study describes the basic characteristics of practicing cycling coaches and presents economic models of the determinants of commercial success for individual coaches. Data were collected through an independent survey of current and former U.S.A. Cycling (USAC) coaches in 2010 (N = 386). Results of ordinary least squares and negative-binomial regression models suggest that coaching and competitive experience are associated with larger clienteles, but formal human capital investments do not generally add to a coach's ability to garner more clients. …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Women's Experiences With Personal Training, Cherilyn N. Hultquist, Melissa N. Madeson, Amy Church, Leslee A. Fisher
Faculty Articles
Personal training is a rapidly growing industry in a country that is in dire need of physical fitness and health improvements. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand women's experiences with personal training. To address the research question, eight female participants ages 24 to 54 years were interviewed using the following phenomenological question: "When you think about your current experience with personal training what stands out for you?" The interviews were conducted, transcribed, and qualitatively analyzed to identify themes in participants' responses. The ground that emerged was positive experience within which existed four figural themes: Relationships, trainer …

The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists has long recognized the valuable synergy between research and education, and the mutual importance of each in advancing the field. Consequently, a focal point of an Academy grant initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education has been a systematic analysis of research capacity and advanced education. A grant project in 2004 convened a series of meetings and produced the Advanced Education and Research Training Initiative (AERTI) report.
Continuing the initiative, a multidisciplinary and multinational group of experts convened in Chicago July 17-19, 2009 to review the 2004 AERTI Report, evaluate its recommendations …
