Going The Distance: Flipped Classrooms And The Research Appointment

The Southeastern Librarian

This case study examines the use of online help guides and their potential impact in helping graduate distance students prepare for a scheduled meeting with a reference librarian. Students taking a dissertation planning course were surveyed to determine if a custom LibGuide and accompanying class assignments prepared them for in-depth research during their meeting with a reference librarian. Findings revealed that the majority of students believed that this flipped-classroom style approach had a positive impact on their research abilities and skills. Recommendations are provided for online help resources that can be adapted for use in online and hybrid courses.

The Social Register: Staying Relevant In The Post-Industrial Age, David Broad Jul 2020

The Social Register: Staying Relevant In The Post-Industrial Age, David Broad

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

The Social Register has been since 1888 a defining feature of the American social upper class which has been argued by Baltzell, Domhoff and others as a governing class. From its beginnings in the flowering of the corporate oligarchy in the industrial age, the Social Register has changed relatively little in character or content. Recent journalistic and social scientific examinations of Social Registry have questioned its continuing relevance to the thesis that the social upper class is a governing class. This paper examines some of the foundational work of Domhoff and others and extends that examination to recent developments in …

High-Resolution Mapping Of Fish Conservation Priorities Within The Mobile River Basin, James R. Carl Jul 2020

High-Resolution Mapping Of Fish Conservation Priorities Within The Mobile River Basin, James R. Carl

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Identifying potential protected areas is increasingly important as freshwater fishes and associated aquatic organisms are under increasing peril. Human population, growth and subsequent landscape alteration, is degrading water quality and changing the physical characteristics of streams, potentially threatening aquatic species. The goal is to assess the capacity for protected areas to maintain diverse stream fish communities within the Mobile River Basin, including the upper Coosa River basin, by overlaying projections of fish species distributions and footprints of protected areas. Tools for identifying fish species distributions, environmental predictors, and potential protected areas include spatial conservation prioritization algorithms combined with open access …

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor Jul 2020

Open Research Projects And Public Sociology: Students Communicating Creatively In The Classroom And Beyond, Daniel J. Rose, William V. Taylor

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

As teachers, we often deny students the freedom to choose topics of inquiry and methods of communication. We have developed an open research project that challenges students to identify a social problem, gather research, and apply what they have learned by targeting an audience and developing a strategy for effective communication. This assignment centers a “problem-posing” focus that tasks students with confronting relevant issues in their lives and communities. It emphasizes public sociology by shifting the audience for their projects from instructors to classmates, families, communities, and beyond. Students have communicated their work through a variety of mediums, including children’s …

Thirdspace Investigations: Geography, Dehumanization And Seeking Spatial Justice In Kinesiology, Brian Culp Jun 2020

Thirdspace Investigations: Geography, Dehumanization And Seeking Spatial Justice In Kinesiology, Brian Culp

Faculty Articles

The 39th Annual Dudley A. Sargent Lecturer challenges the kinesiology professions to be intentional in addressing issues related to spatiality. Beginning with an outline of how such a focus has viability for the profession, the author overviews: (a) spatial justice and mobility through the lens of Gordon Parks; (b) surfing, localism and cityhood efforts; (c) notions of space and dehumanization as defined by Herbert Kelman; and (d) the need for a renewal of kinesthetic consciousness in the face of unrestricted technocracy in physical education. The second part of the lecture presents an interpretation of Edward Soja’s theory of Thirdspace in …

Regional Economic Communities In Africa As A Conflict Mitigation Mechanism: The Case Of The Economic Community Of West African States, Jean-Marc Akakpo May 2020

Regional Economic Communities In Africa As A Conflict Mitigation Mechanism: The Case Of The Economic Community Of West African States, Jean-Marc Akakpo

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is the regional institution mandated to develop economic and political integration between its 15 member states. ECOWAS expanded its mandate in the 1990s to include conflict prevention and mitigation. The Council of the Wise, a group of respected elders from ECOWAS member states, was created to engage in preventive diplomacy and is a unique institution based on African cultures’ respect for elders as mediators. The research question for this dissertation was: “What is the role of ECOWAS and the Council of the Wise in transforming conflict in West Africa, especially in Mali?” …

Model For Play | Creating Environments For Learning Through Playful Exploration, Ana Giron May 2020

Model For Play | Creating Environments For Learning Through Playful Exploration, Ana Giron

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Cultivating imagination in early childhood education is a fundamental stage in the development of children. This cultivation is set aside when children reach school age. The traditional classroom has become a workstation environment, where children move from task to task—creating a singular type of student and disregarding the inherent differences of the human condition. Educational experience has become stagnant and repetitive, with little to no room for the development of individual imaginations. The design of the classroom setting is a critical point of exploration—as the mechanism for change in the education of children. This thesis aims to explore the learning …

Informing Space: A Human Centered Approach To Designing An (Adaptive) Modular Dwelling On Mars, Hala Alfalih, Hala Alfalih

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

With tech giants like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Lockheed Martin teaming with NASA to spearhead the mission to Mars, this provides an opportunity for architecture and design to engage in the conversation of the inevitable future of space exploration.

Research will explore structure, module and habitat as a means of developing an adaptive and parametrically designed dwelling for the first astronauts that will land on Mars. This thesis explores the intersection of the physical built environment and the psychology of astronauts in a remote, foreign and harsh environment. How can a shelter provide the essential needs to inhabit Mars while …

Chain Of Custody: Access And Control Of State Archival Records In Public-Private Partnerships, Sarah E. Carlson Apr 2020

Chain Of Custody: Access And Control Of State Archival Records In Public-Private Partnerships, Sarah E. Carlson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

As I write this, Ancestry.com is a central party in a lawsuit with the organization Reclaim The Records, citing that it, a private corporation, received preferential priority and access to public records before individual patrons of the public in Freedom of Information requests for genealogical records.[i] Concern that public records may move into private hands demarcates an increasingly digital realm of record-keeping and public history. As companies and the public jockey for access to records in a race for access – one open and the other annexed behind a paywall – the blatant corruption is alarming. Yet, public records …

Exploring The Experiences Of Community Health Workers In The Dominican Republic Using Photovoice, Johnathan Steppe Mar 2020

Exploring The Experiences Of Community Health Workers In The Dominican Republic Using Photovoice, Johnathan Steppe

Doctorate of Nursing Science Dissertations

In order to mitigate the growing health worker shortage, many low-middle income countries (LMICs) use community health workers (CHWs) to extend health services to underserved communities. Community health workers are laypersons with minimal training who provide basic health services for they communities in which they live. Although past research has demonstrated that CHWs can provide appropriate care that contributes to positive health outcomes, many CHW programs fail to achieve long-term sustainability. As the largest group of health professionals, nurses often work closely with CHWs, and are therefore well-positioned to support sustainability of CHW programs.

The purpose of this participatory action …

Money Matters: Academic Library Scholarship And Funding Initiatives For Graduate Students, Wendy Doucette, Elizabeth Kline Mar 2020

Money Matters: Academic Library Scholarship And Funding Initiatives For Graduate Students, Wendy Doucette, Elizabeth Kline

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Graduate programs in all disciplines view external funding as a benchmark of success. For students on research teams and for those seeking academic careers, faculty role models demonstrate the need for funding as an integral part of the research cycle. Closer to home, the increasing cost of graduate education requires students seek supplemental funding. This session, divided into two segments (internal and external funding), will present experiential case studies for how academic libraries can design scholarships and fellowships to serve graduate students in this often overlooked phase of their graduate education.

Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has …

Myositis Ossificans Traumatica With Associated Pseudarthroses In An Adult From Late Bronze Age Athens, Greece, Susan K. Smith, Maria A. Liston

Faculty Articles

This case study documents an unusual heterotopic ossification with associated pseudarthroses of the lumbar spine. We examined the partial skeletal remains of an adult from a Late Bronze Age (Mycenaean Late Helladic IIB-IIIA1 period, approximately1400–1375 BCE) chamber tomb from the Athenian Agora excavations in Greece. This individual had a large bony mass in the region of the intertransversarius muscle that spanned L3–L5 vertebrae and formed pseudarthroses at the superior and inferior ends. The differential diagnosis of the bony mass included dystrophic and neoplastic calcifications and myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT). MOT is a benign heterotopic bone growth typically found in skeletal …

The Rise And Fall Of A Parallel-Walled Structure: Assessing The Site Sequence At Pachamta, Teresa Raczek, Prabodh Shirvalkar, Esha Prasad, Lalit Pandey

Faculty Articles

In this article, we investigate the chronology of a large parallel-walled mudbrick structure at the site of Pachamta in Rajasthan, India. Pachamta is larger than the contemporaneous Harappan site of Kalibangan and part of a society collectively known as the Ahar Culture. Recent excavations at Pachamta provided an opportunity to elaborate on the available dates for this society and to investigate the chronology of an enigmatic parallel-walled structure. The chronology and function of such prominent structures remains murky, although scholars have suggested that these buildings served as public storage because they resemble the granary at Harappa. Through excavation, our team …

Introduction: Toward An Engaged Feminist Heritage Praxis, Tiffany C. Fryer, Teresa Raczek Jan 2020

Introduction: Toward An Engaged Feminist Heritage Praxis, Tiffany C. Fryer, Teresa Raczek

Faculty Articles

We advocate a feminist approach to archaeological heritage work in order to transform heritage practice and the production of archaeological knowledge. We use an engaged feminist standpoint and situate intersubjectivity and intersectionality as critical components of this practice. An engaged feminist approach to heritage work allows the discipline to consider women’s, men’s, and gender non-conforming persons’ positions in the field, to reveal their contributions, to develop critical pedagogical approaches, and to rethink forms of representation. Throughout, we emphasize the intellectual labor of women of color, queer and gender non-conforming persons, and early white feminists in archaeology.

Economic Strength And Micropolitan Statistical Areas: Looking Beyond Generalities, W. Frank Thompson Jr., Ayesha Tariq, Connie Nott

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Facility location decisions serve an important role in setting up efficient and cost-effective supply chains. While metropolitan areas may appear an obvious choice for many companies, nonmetropolitan areas deserve consideration. In the past, nonmetropolitan areas have been broadly classified as “rural” with reports of economic decline. This research looks beyond the general category of nonmetropolitan by dividing the area into micropolitan statistical areas and non-core statistical areas. The authors use U.S. Census data from the years 2010 to 2016 to analyze changes in population, median household income, retail employment, and retail salaries in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. Companies can use …

Diversity And Consumption: Evaluation Of The Research Papers On The Lgbt Community In Top Marketing Journals, Cintia Loos Pinto, Nuria Huete Alcocer, Laura Mercedes Avellaneda Rivera, Ricardo Teixeira Veiga

Atlantic Marketing Journal

The purpose of this research is to identify the evolution of papers published on LGBT issues in the main marketing journals. To that end, the 50 top-ranked journals in the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) were analyzed, revealing that 17 of them had at least one publication on the subject. Analysis of a total of 34 articles enabled the main topics studied to be summarized in six categories: the effects of LGBT advertising on the viewers; LGBT advertising – an overview; gender studies in marketing; the gay-friendly approach; the LGBT market; and social marketing.
