The Prevalence Of Lead Fragments From Shotgun Slugs/Muzzleoader Bullets In Ground Venision Meant For Human Consumption, Genevieve Alexander, Given Harper, Faculty Advisor
The Prevalence Of Lead Fragments From Shotgun Slugs/Muzzleoader Bullets In Ground Venision Meant For Human Consumption, Genevieve Alexander, Given Harper, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
Recent studies have shown that lead shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets often fragment inside game animals. The majority of ammunition types used in firearms that are permitted by the State of Illinois for hunting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) contain lead, which is toxic to both humans and animals that scavenge deer carcasses. Although many studies have examined the impact of lead bullet fragmentation in game animals from high powered rifles, few studies have documented the presence of lead fragments from shotgun slugs and muzzleloader bullets in ground venison meant for human consumption in Illinois. In this study, ground …

Honors Projects
One of the most difficult obstacles I faced while working on this collection of writings was articulating exactly what this project is. It is, on the surface, a Research Honors Project, defined by Illinois Wesleyan University as "an opportunity for qualified seniors to engage in a significant research project under the guidance of a faculty advisor" ("Office of the Provost"). In my preliminary Research Honors proposal, I declared my intention to concoct a capstone project which, through ecopoetics, would honor my four years of study in the fields of Environmental Studies and English. I wanted to utilize my skills in …

Assessing The Biodiversity And Susceptibility Of Trees In Maxwell Park To Future Invasive Tree Pest Outbreaks, Genevieve Alexander '14
Assessing The Biodiversity And Susceptibility Of Trees In Maxwell Park To Future Invasive Tree Pest Outbreaks, Genevieve Alexander '14
Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers
The purpose of this project was to assess tree susceptibility to invasive tree pest outbreaks in a Central-Illinois urban park. Tree biodiversity in Maxwell Park, located in the Town of Normal, Illinois, was evaluated assuming that the greater the tree biodiversity in a park, the more resilient the park would be to future invasive tree pest outbreaks. The Town of Normal Parks and Recreation Department served as the community partner for this project. By determining Maxwell Park’s current level of biodiversity, proposed new trees for future replacement plantings could be identified to help increase biodiversity and decrease the potential for …
Assessing The Indoor Tanning Behaviors And Risk Of Skin Cancer Among Illinois Wesleyan University Students, Ellen Cornelius '14
Assessing The Indoor Tanning Behaviors And Risk Of Skin Cancer Among Illinois Wesleyan University Students, Ellen Cornelius '14
Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers
The purpose of this research is to assess the indoor tanning behaviors of students at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) in Bloomington, Illinois and formulate strategies to reduce students’ risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is widespread, and is the second most common cancer among people aged 15-24 years. There is strong evidence to support that many skin cancer cases seen today could have been avoided if the individual had never used an indoor tanning device. Research suggests the use of indoor tanning devices is popular among college-aged females in the US, thus persuading this demographic to reduce their indoor tanning …

The Feasibility Of Eliminating Disposable Plastic Water Bottles At Illinois Wesleyan University, Joseph Daniels, Abigail Jahiel, Faculty Advisor
The Feasibility Of Eliminating Disposable Plastic Water Bottles At Illinois Wesleyan University, Joseph Daniels, Abigail Jahiel, Faculty Advisor
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
The bottled water industry is polluting, costly, and dangerous to the health of the consumers and the environment. Chemicals in the plastic bottles often leach into the water, which can be harmful to the consumer. Water bottles also create many problems after disposal, often ending up in landfills or in waterways rather than being recycled.
This report looks into what needs to be done to eliminate the sale of disposable plastic water bottles at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU). It discusses the negative effects of the bottled water industry, and why a ban would benefit IWU students, faculty, and staff. What …
