Persuasive Attack And Defense Of Campus Free Speech: Implications For The First Amendment, Joseph R. Blaney, Matthew J. Blaney Jan 2023

Persuasive Attack And Defense Of Campus Free Speech: Implications For The First Amendment, Joseph R. Blaney, Matthew J. Blaney

Faculty Publications - Communications

This essay examines controversies and exchanges regarding free speech on college and university campuses in the United States. The authors offer an overview of the general discord about free speech and a review of the most current and relevant jurisprudence. Following this, theories of persuasive attack (Benoit and Dorries, 1996; Legge et al., 2012) and persuasive defense (Benoit, 1995) are used as a lens to characterize the topoi (opportunities for argument) from which attempts to limit or protect campus free speech proceed. Analysis points to future conflicts centered on viewpoint neutrality versus a compelling interest in protecting listeners from potentially …

The Absence Of Trauma-Informed Practices In The High School Production Process: A Qualitative Study, Jimmy Chrismon, Adam W. Carter Jan 2023

The Absence Of Trauma-Informed Practices In The High School Production Process: A Qualitative Study, Jimmy Chrismon, Adam W. Carter

Faculty Publications – Theatre, Dance, and Film

Theatre has the potential to impact students’ mental health, especially when creating and telling stories with traumatic themes. Theatre teachers are uniquely positioned to unintentionally inflict further harm on their students if they do not incorporate trauma-informed practices (TIP) in the work they do in class and in productions. As theatre educators typically do not have special certifications or credentials in mental health, knowing TIP is crucial to help prevent the retraumatization of students who have experienced trauma. This study discusses current practices in the high school production process in the United States and the absence of TIP in theatre …

The Vignette Method: A Flexibile Method For Capstone Courses And As A Supplemental Learning Experience In Research Labs, Susan Sprecher

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

Many departments in colleges and universities require a capstone course that involves the students conducting a research project. This author has had over 20 years of experience teaching such a capstone course and describes a flexible research method for student research projects – the vignette study (an experiment embedded in a survey). She also has teams of undergraduate students working in her lab for research credit make progress on a vignette design as one of several research activities. The vignette study can be used for students across many majors, including but not limited to sociology, psychology, criminal justice, nursing, social …

Long-Term Health Effects Of Work Trajectories Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults: The Mediating Role Of Work, Material, And Social Environments, Oejin Shin, Ji Young Kang, Seoyeon Ahn, Borin Kim, Sojung Park

Faculty Publications - Social Work

Using data from 14 waves (2003–2016) of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) (N = 1,627 individuals aged 45–64; 22778 observations), in this study, we conducted sequence analysis and a multi-categorical variable mediation analysis (1) to examine to what extent long-term work histories exhibit varying degrees of de-standardization and precariousness using sequence analysis (2) to explore the potential mediating effects of work, material, and social environments in the association between multiple work sequences and self-rated health. We found the coexistence of a relatively stable long-term employment pattern and a high prevalence of precariousness. The health and economic …

Self-Disclosure Of Mental Illness In The College Classroom: The Role Of Stigma And Avoidance, Christopher Gjesfjeld, Jeffrey Kahn Jan 2023

Self-Disclosure Of Mental Illness In The College Classroom: The Role Of Stigma And Avoidance, Christopher Gjesfjeld, Jeffrey Kahn

Faculty Publications - Social Work

Many college students identify having a mental health condition, yet students may be ambivalent about self-disclosing their mental health. While stigma and self-disclosure have been examined in research, personal factors may also impact self-disclosure behaviors. The present study examined 150 U.S. college students with a self-identified mental health condition. Research aimed to predict classmate self-disclosure by stigma, avoidance beliefs, and the interaction of these variables. Multiple regression analysis found a significant interaction effect, whereby stigma was negatively associated with self-disclosure only under conditions of low avoidance. Implications suggest that self-disclosure interventions target stigma and avoidance beliefs to encourage greater self-disclosure.

Mapping Communities Of Mothering: Where Race, Class, Gender, And Space Intersect, Cynthia Edmonds-Cady Jan 2023

Mapping Communities Of Mothering: Where Race, Class, Gender, And Space Intersect, Cynthia Edmonds-Cady

Faculty Publications - Social Work

This manuscript explores the unique construction of community that young, low-income, women create, based on the embodied internal and external spaces they occupy as lone mothers. Issues related to diverse women’s representation, voice, and power, within these socially constructed communities are examined. Attention is paid to how young low-income mothers experience and actively create their own supportive community within both geographic and social boundaries, in active resistance to dominant and oppressive assumptions. To explore these concepts in-depth, results are presented from an ethnographic study that examined the community participation of eleven young, low-income, racially diverse single mothers living in a …

Awareness Of Social Media Audiences Among Adolescents In A School-Based Intervention, Keeley Hynes, Luke Russell, Daniel Lannin, Leandra N. Parris, Ani Yazedjian

Faculty Publications – Psychology

The current study investigated adolescents’ (N=213) decision finding processes and affective reactions to interactions on social media via 29 focus groups. As part of a larger study, adolescents participated in focus groups at two time-points across an academic year while participating in a school-based intervention promoting healthy romantic, interpersonal, and family relationships, job readiness, and financial literacy. Qualitative analyses indicated adolescents’ experiences and decisions on social media platforms were informed by their awareness of audiences, namely who they thought would view their posts and anticipated responses from “friends,” “family members,” “fans,” “creeps,” and “potential employers.” Comprehensive school-based interventions may serve …

Activism As Leadership: Supporting Progressive Activists Within Our Work, S. Gavin Weiser Jan 2023

Activism As Leadership: Supporting Progressive Activists Within Our Work, S. Gavin Weiser

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This empirical work is driven by a study on the experiences and motivation of a group of college-aged student activists. Using a cohort of 14 millennial-aged activists who organized their work in response to a rise of right-wing authoritarianism in national and state politics, this paper presents recommendations for how student affairs professionals working in activities-oriented functional areas can leverage these experiences to build capacity around engagement, leadership development, sense of belonging, and work in partnership with these communities to challenge unjust practices within the academy. Further, I argue that in order to do our work of supporting students in …

Exploring Faculty Perspectives On Open Access At A Medium-Sized, American Doctoral University, Rachel E. Scott, Julie Murphy, Cassie Thayer-Styes, Chad E. Buckley, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Faculty hold widely varying perspectives on the benefits and challenges afforded by open access (OA) publishing. In the United States, conversations on OA models and strategy have been dominated by scholars affiliated with Carnegie R1 institutions. This article reports findings from interviews conducted with faculty at a Carnegie R2 institution, highlighting disciplinary and individual perspectives on the high costs and rich rewards afforded by OA. The results reiterate the persistence of a high degree of skepticism regarding the quality of peer review and business models associated with OA publishing. By exploring scholars’ perceptions of and experiences with OA publishing and …

Self-Care With Self-Compassion (Sc2): A Program To Foster Well-Being In Graduate Speech-Language Pathology Students, Laura R. Chapman, Karalee Cole

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

This article describes elements of Self-Care with Self-Compassion (SC2), a novel program designed to foster well-being in graduate speech-language-pathology (SLP) students. Graduate SLP students experience elevated levels of perceived stress, which can ultimately impact their professional competence. University programs, faculty, and staff are uniquely positioned to help students learn to cope with stress. Self-care and self-compassion may buffer some of the effects of stress, and at the same time foster qualities in students that facilitate learning and promote healthy clinical practice. Twenty-five incoming SLP graduate students participated in SC2, a required, two-part workshop. Levels of perceived …

The Racial Diversity Lag In Audiology: Improvement Of Recruitment And Retention Of Black Doctor Of Audiology Students, Jacquelyn Jouett, Antony Joseph Jul 2022

The Racial Diversity Lag In Audiology: Improvement Of Recruitment And Retention Of Black Doctor Of Audiology Students, Jacquelyn Jouett, Antony Joseph

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

The racial composition of the Audiology workforce is, by no means, a reflection of the US population. Black and African American audiologists are disproportionately represented in the United States. Diverse audiologists are significantly underrepresented in clinical and academic fields. Inversely, students in the racial majority are overrepresented in Audiology and most medical specialties for that matter. This disparity may limit access to hearing-healthcare for some populations in the country. Several factors that contribute to this condition must be more fully understood before this issue can be corrected. Recruitment and retention must be improved to increase diversity, particularly students of color, …

The Moderating Effect Of Mission Statement Integration Within Non-Profit Organizations, Emma Christine Harris Jun 2022

The Moderating Effect Of Mission Statement Integration Within Non-Profit Organizations, Emma Christine Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding non-profit organizational factors that distinguish successful companies from unsuccessful companies will aid in the implementation of clearer business planning strategies (Bart, 1998). Past research has shown that companywide mission statements have the capability to optimize productivity and energize the workforce (Patel et al., 2015). This study aimed to examine the effects of mission statements on prevalent factors linked to nonprofit organizational success. It was hypothesized that (1) the integration of the mission statement into the work environment moderates the relation between P-O fit and employee engagement and (2) mission statement integration also moderates the relation between P-O fit and …

Intercampus Health Care Simulation Model For Development Of Students’ Interprofessional Socialization And Competency, Cody Marie Busch, Lynn Gilbertson, Colleen Gullickson, Elizabeth Laessig Jun 2022

Intercampus Health Care Simulation Model For Development Of Students’ Interprofessional Socialization And Competency, Cody Marie Busch, Lynn Gilbertson, Colleen Gullickson, Elizabeth Laessig

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Clinical education standards for speech-language pathology and nursing programs indicate the need for students to gain experience with interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP). However, colleges not affiliated with hospitals struggle to offer experiences between healthcare disciplines. The purpose of this paper is to present a case study as a model for interprofessional healthcare simulation that can be applied to schools that have limited access to a variety of professional programs and few complimentary medical specialties at their home institution. The partnership of a masters in speech-language pathology (MS-SLP) program at a public state sponsored institution and a bachelors of science in …

Vocabulary & Academic Success In University Undergraduate Students, Sandra Irvin, Kathryn Guillot Blankenship Jun 2022

Vocabulary & Academic Success In University Undergraduate Students, Sandra Irvin, Kathryn Guillot Blankenship

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Thirty- nine students at a four-year university participated in this two-part study. One part investigated the relationship between maternal education and vocabulary while also looking at the relationship between vocabulary and academic success. The second portion looked at the relationship between vocabulary and word learning. Results from the study indicate that vocabulary knowledge is significantly correlated with GPA and students’ ability to learn words in a limited amount of time. Students with higher vocabulary scores earned higher gain scores and GPA. Maternal education was not significantly correlated with PPVT scores, contrary to what prior literature would suggest.

Pregnant Women's Perception Of Risk Associated With Tobacco Use During Pregnancy, Teresa Lynn Gulley Feb 2022

Pregnant Women's Perception Of Risk Associated With Tobacco Use During Pregnancy, Teresa Lynn Gulley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore pregnant women’s perception of risk related to tobacco use during pregnancy. A concept analysis of pregnant women’s perception of risk related to substance use is included in Chapter 1. Pregnant women’s perception of substance use risk is more than knowledge of risk but instead an internalization of personal risk based on belief in susceptibility and severity of harm. In Chapter 2, a literature review was conducted to review the current state of the literature regarding pregnant women’s perception of tobacco use risk during pregnancy. The literature review supports low risk perception among …
