Getting Real With Strategy: Insights From Implementation Science, Douglas Easterling, Allison Metz
Getting Real With Strategy: Insights From Implementation Science, Douglas Easterling, Allison Metz
The Foundation Review
Foundations are increasingly coming to appreciate the importance of strategy. But simply having a strategy – even an explicit strategy – does not guarantee that a foundation will actually achieve its goals.
To implement a strategy effectively, a foundation needs to operationalize it in the form of specific functions that staff will carry out and needs to create an organizational infrastructure that supports the strategy. The field of implementation science offers a set of tools for helping foundations address these tasks.
After introducing some general principles of implementation science, this article describes in depth the concepts of practice profiles, which …
Screening Initiative For Non-Stroke Geriatric Inpatients, Kimberly Harper
Screening Initiative For Non-Stroke Geriatric Inpatients, Kimberly Harper
Doctoral Projects
Current literature reveals a need for improved depression screening efforts among inpatient geriatrics. This population is at higher risk for severe depression, suicidal ideations, poorer health outcomes related to decreased compliance to healthcare regimens, and increased healthcare costs. Current best practice involves the utilization of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS-SF), a 15-question yes or no answer screening tool. While not diagnostic, the tool has established validity and reliability testing. The GDS-SF should not be used on subsets of the population diagnosed with stroke, dementia or delirium.
The purpose of this project was to develop a protocol for implementation of …

Use Of Culturally Tailored Media To Increase Hiv Screening Among African Americans, Leda Evans
Use Of Culturally Tailored Media To Increase Hiv Screening Among African Americans, Leda Evans
Doctoral Projects
Over one million people in the United States have HIV with a substantial portion of these individuals being African American. Innovative approaches to improving the HIV disparity among African Americans have been encouraged by the federal government. Culturally tailored HIV risk reduction interventions have been noted as effective in several studies in reducing risk behavior. The purpose of the intervention was to determine if the use of culturally tailored HIV risk reduction media would result in an increase in HIV screening among African Americans. A one-time community based-intervention with no control group was utilized to determine impact of media. Screening …

Liberal Studies Undergraduate Research
This Community dialogue was designed to discover what homeless individuals need, in terms of services and assistance, to prevent the perpetuating cycle of homelessness itself. After the discussion, our team hopes service organizations in Grand Rapids will take our findings into consideration in their efforts towards designing and implementing programs around homelessness.

Culture, Emotional Expression And Parental Socialization Strategies Among Two-Year-Old Israeli Toddlers, Manal Khoury Karayanni, Jenny Kurman
Culture, Emotional Expression And Parental Socialization Strategies Among Two-Year-Old Israeli Toddlers, Manal Khoury Karayanni, Jenny Kurman
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
One of the most important developments in childhood is the development of emotional expression and its regulation. The capacity for the deliberate modulation of one’s behavior and emotion develops mainly in the second year, and it is considered a key developmental milestone that markedly transforms the child’s ability to function in the social environment (Kochanska, Coy, & Murray, 2001; Maccoby, 2007). Social norms, established by culture, dictate how, where, when and to whom specific emotions are expressed (Garrett-Peters & Fox, 2007). These norms are specific rules taught in a specific culture and dictate which emotional expressions are socially desirable in …
Parenting Practices, Racial Socialization, And Adolescent Functioning In African American Families, Adeya Richmond, Laura D. Pittman
Parenting Practices, Racial Socialization, And Adolescent Functioning In African American Families, Adeya Richmond, Laura D. Pittman
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
African American parents’ use of racial socialization messages has been associated with other parenting practices and behaviors as well as adolescent functioning. This study explored the relationships among racial socialization, general parenting practices (e.g., parental monitoring knowledge, harsh parental discipline, and parent-child relationship) and three psychological outcomes (e.g., scholastic competence, self-esteem, and externalizing behaviors) among 103 African American adolescents. Based on linear regressions, adolescents’ scholastic competence was positively associated with cultural socialization and negatively associated with promotion of mistrust, but self-esteem and externalizing behaviors were not linked to any racial socialization dimension. Further, cultural socialization was …
Exploring The Quality And Inequality In The Literacy Development Opportunities Of South African Preschoolers, Annalene Van Staden
Exploring The Quality And Inequality In The Literacy Development Opportunities Of South African Preschoolers, Annalene Van Staden
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
According to the South African Constitution and Bill of Rights, with their emphasis on a culture of civil liberties and the democratic values of liberty, equality and human rights, the country’s education system should be inherently capable of meeting the diverse needs of every child and preventing the breakdown and exclusion of any learner. In reality, however, the South African education system fails to address the literacy needs of many South African children. National literacy surveys suggest that the country is ‘headed for a national education crisis’ (Bloch, 2009:12), because we ‘barely produce literate and numerate children’. Against this disturbing …

A Critical Analysis Of Acculturation, Sociocultural Pressures, Body Image, And Disordered Eating Among Asian Immigrants In Australia, Canada, And The United States, Lexa Watroba, Jayne Eckley, Arlette Ngoubene.Atioky
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Asian immigrants are an emerging ethnic minority in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Previous literature has examined how immigration to Western countries and the sociocultural pressures associated with a new host country, particularly the United States, impacts Asian immigrants’ body image and dietary regimen. However, there has been less of a focus on the level of acculturation of Asian immigrants in Canada and Australia and its relationship with body image dissatisfaction, disordered eating, and sociocultural pressures. The paucity of cross-cultural analysis and the inconclusive knowledge of how acculturation and sociocultural pressures may serve as predictors of poor body image …

Nonprofit Organizations And The Utilization Of Social Media: Maximizing And Measuring Return Of Investment, Morgan Appleby
SPNHA Review
With billions of global users, the successful utilization of social media platforms is becoming an essential task for the nonprofit sector. Organizations that successfully implement strategic social media campaigns experience significant improvements to their organizational capacity. Navigating the implementation of a social media campaign is a challenging process, specifically, maximizing and measuring return on investment. This comprehensive literature review was conducted to gain deeper understanding of the challenges associated with maximizing and measuring return on investment in social media campaigns and to identify emerging best practices for addressing these issues. Existing literature from multiple fields including marketing, business, communications, and …
