A Study Of The Relationship Between Semiotic Content In Commercial Email Subject Lines And The Decision By The Recipient To Open The Message, Stephen J. Johnson
A Study Of The Relationship Between Semiotic Content In Commercial Email Subject Lines And The Decision By The Recipient To Open The Message, Stephen J. Johnson
Masters Theses
The writings of Saussure, Peirce, Barthes, Eco and others express theories that symbols, signs, and signals are integral elements in the assignation of meaning within general human communication. Email marketing specialists such as Stephanie Miller, Andy Goldman, and Jeannieay Mullen opine that it is the email recipient’s inferences regarding the words in the address or subject lines that are the primary determinants in the decision whether or not to first open and subsequently respond to a commercial email. It would then seem that email marketers would be well served by understanding what forms these inferences in the minds of the …

The Rhetorical Implications Of Clementia In Cicero’S Caesarian Speeches, Aaron Rozeboom
The Rhetorical Implications Of Clementia In Cicero’S Caesarian Speeches, Aaron Rozeboom
McNair Scholars Journal
Cicero’s Caesarian speeches were delivered in 46-45 B.C. to Caesar after his victories in the Civil War. Caesar faced a number of critical issues as he dealt with the political and social aftermath of the years after 49 B.C., including what to do with the supporters of his enemies. Cicero, preeminent orator and a key political, was well-placed to speak on behalf of these individuals. Clementia, as an intrinsic theme, impinges upon social, political, and linguistic spheres and became a nexus for anxieties and manipulation between the senatorial and plebian orders. This research compares and contrasts the understanding, presentation, and …

Friendship, Otherness, And Gadamer’S Politics Of Solidarity, Darren R. Walhof
Friendship, Otherness, And Gadamer’S Politics Of Solidarity, Darren R. Walhof
Peer Reviewed Articles
This article makes the political dimension of Gadamer’s thought more explicit by examining the interplay of three concepts in his work: solidarity, friendship, and the other. Focusing primarily on certain post–Truth and Method writings, I argue that Gadamer’s conception of solidarity has to do with historically contingent manifestations of bonds that reflect a civic life together of reciprocal co-perception. These bonds go beyond conscious recognition of observable similarities and differences and emerge from encounters among those who are, and remain, in important ways other to each other. I make this case through an analysis of Gadamer’s phenomenology of friendship and …

Association Mechanisms And The Intentionality Of The Mental, Mark Stephen Pestana
Association Mechanisms And The Intentionality Of The Mental, Mark Stephen Pestana
Articles, Book Chapters, Essays
This paper is an explanation of how the intentionality of perception is due to specific associations of sensations. It describes the intentionality of the mental and the problem that intentionality poses for accounts of the mind. The concept of "direction of fit" or "fulfillment of the act" is central to this description. An amalgamation of various recent interpretations of intentionality into a unified theory is presented along with an account of why even such a unified theory fails to account for direction of fit. The direction of fit of perceptual intentionality is then elucidated as a function of patterns of …

Perceived Barriers To Care Among Hispanic Women Who Delay Prenatal Care, Gustavo A. Moretta
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among selected demographic variables and the barriers to prenatal care perceived by English- Speaking, Hispanic women. The Health Belief Model was used as the theoretical framework to guide the development of this study.
The sample consisted of 20 participants aged 18 years to 38 years of age who had sought prenatal care at a primary care clinic in a midwest community. The participants had visited the provider for prenatal care after the twelfth week of gestation. Data were obtained using two instruments. Melnyk’s Perceived Barriers to Care Seale (1990) measured …
Inducing The Holy Spirit Through The Pentecostal Message, Melissa Guzman
Inducing The Holy Spirit Through The Pentecostal Message, Melissa Guzman
McNair Scholars Journal
Pentecostalism (PC) is the most prolific branch of American evangelical Christianity (Jacobsen 2003) as it has been able to provide to its adherents, subcultures and collective identities that bestow meaning and belonging (Smith 1998). PC arose from Methodist and Baptist branches of Christianity at the end of the 19th century (Blumhofer 1993) and was involved in adjusting millions of migrants to U.S. city life (Synan 1997). Because PC has “straddled the race line in ways that most other American religious movements did not” (Jacobsen 2003: 260), it is significant to consider its wide appeal by analyzing how it manifests itself …

Jobs Are Going Overseas: The Discursive Construction Of Outsourcing, Vandana Pednekar-Magal, Kathryn Remlinger
Peer Reviewed Articles
In this article we examine the discourse of outsourcing and globalization in India and the US as represented in global popular media; and show that it is rooted in a given range of ideological positions—revealed by identifying key arguments, vocabulary and linguistic structure of the texts. Ideological material, we argue, is enacted in the discursive structures of the text; and that the role of the state is discursively constructed through those positions.
Nookaler Ambitions: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of Persuasive Speech, Eric Gladstone
Nookaler Ambitions: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of Persuasive Speech, Eric Gladstone
McNair Scholars Journal
This study proposes a general model of persuasion based in social-psychology and cognitive information processing theory and is composed of an ideal listener/speaker/environment interaction. Drawing upon research conducted by Lowenthal and Guterman (1950), Erich Hoffer (1952), and Prakanis and Aranson (1992), the model is oriented towards post-911 presidential communications for testing. Presidential rhetoric is organized into seventeen themes, and these themes are analyzed so as to determine what effect, if any, said persuasive trends have on the individual listener. Insight into the characteristics and effects of persuasive communiqués is essential to the development of rational, critical psyches within persuasively-dense environments.
