A Multi-Causal Approach To The Thirty Years’ War, Ethan Haan
A Multi-Causal Approach To The Thirty Years’ War, Ethan Haan
Grand Valley Journal of History
The Thirty Years’ War was arguably the most consequential war of the Wars of Religion and of the wider European conflicts in the 17th century. The historiography on the causes of the war has been present ever since literature on the conflict became available shortly after its cessation. Since 1900, the debate over the underlying motivations has intensified and has become muddied in some areas. This study aims to summarize and clarify the previous positions that historians have taken on what caused the war, from religious urges to socio-economic and political factors. This study also attempts to clearly define where …
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Evidence Based Protocol: Improving Depression Assessments In Primary Care, Katherine E. Hoffhines
Master's Projects
Depression is a destructive condition that can have a profoundly negative impact on quality of life, wellbeing, and health (Thase, Stowell, Berry, Mencia & Blum, 2014). Worldwide, depression is the leading cause of medical disability costing the health care system over $210 billion annually (World Health Organization, 2014; Greenberg, Fournier, Sisitsky, Pike & Kessler, 2015). The World Health Organization (2016) estimates depression affects 350 million people of all ages globally. One and three adults in the U.S. will experience a major depressive episode during their lifetime (Kessler, Petukhova, Sampson, Zaslavsky & Wittchen, 2012; Rubin, Ciechanowski, Egede, Lin & Lustman, 2004). …

Medieval Europe And The Culture Of Contempt In The Age Of The Lateran Councils, Frank P. Lacopo
Medieval Europe And The Culture Of Contempt In The Age Of The Lateran Councils, Frank P. Lacopo
Grand Valley Journal of History
The period in European history frequently dubbed the long twelfth century saw increased social persecution against those who were deemed outsiders by the Christian elite. Much of the standard historiography of the period emphasizes that the era was culturally and intellectually vibrant. However, clerical elites unified against social “others” within this context in the process of protecting their position in a changing Latin Christian society. Jews were deprived of their allodial tenures and forced to adopt undesirable occupations, lepers were made into objects of aversion, and those of supposedly unwholesome sexual orientations, particularly homosexuals, were ostracized. This culture of contempt …

Reconsidering Attachment In Context Of Culture: Review Of Attachment Studies In Japan, Kazuko Y. Behrens
Reconsidering Attachment In Context Of Culture: Review Of Attachment Studies In Japan, Kazuko Y. Behrens
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This paper revisits the attachment controversies, reexamining the debates regarding attachment phenomenon being universal or culture-specific, and reconsiders whether it is possible to conduct culturally sensitive attachment research in non-Western societies while incorporating systematic empirical designs to enable replications across cultures. The goal of this paper is to improve our understanding about the clash between the fields and achieve consensus regarding the value of attachment research while acknowledging the limitations of attachment research in certain cultural contexts. The cultural debate will focus on one non-Western culture – Japan – where the controversy began. Finally, this review proposes the way in …
Foundation Support Of Immigrant Communities: Insights From A Survey Of Immigrants In Minnesota’S Twin Cities, Nicole Martinrogers, Ryan Evans, Paul Mattessich
Foundation Support Of Immigrant Communities: Insights From A Survey Of Immigrants In Minnesota’S Twin Cities, Nicole Martinrogers, Ryan Evans, Paul Mattessich
The Foundation Review
Immigration brings both benefits and challenges to communities. This article provides insight into the needs of these communities and offers suggestions for how foundations can consider immigrant and refugee communities in their work.
This article combines information from Minnesota Compass, a foundation-governed social-indicators initiative, and Speaking for Ourselves, a study of immigrants and refu- gees in Minnesota’s Twin Cities metropolitan area that identifies the needs and strengths immigrants bring to our communities.
The results can help guide foundations and their grantees on how to improve a community’s quality of life for immigrants and refugees – to the benefit of all …
Conceptualizing Cultural Variations In Close Friendships, Roger Baumgarte
Conceptualizing Cultural Variations In Close Friendships, Roger Baumgarte
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The goal of this article is to propose a model, new to the field, describing cultural variations in close friendships. The model addresses shortcomings in past research regarding how close friendships differ in individualist compared to collectivist cultures. The model proposes three dimensions, with six overlapping but conceptually useful styles of friendship, Independents versus Interveners, Includers versus Excluders, and Idealists versus Realists. Succinct, simplified descriptors of each style follow: Independents respect each other’s autonomy, value spending quality time with friends, and support each other’s sense of self. Interveners are actively involved in their friends’ lives, reflecting the …

Into Darkness: Representing American Anxieties, Alison Pettibone
Into Darkness: Representing American Anxieties, Alison Pettibone
Cinesthesia
The film Star Trek Into Darkness (Abrams, 2013) examines what it means to be human and the fears that are latent within the American subconscious through layered storytelling coupled with the special effects that are now conventional in big budget studio productions. There are many elements within the film that lend themselves to the intricate narrative weaving including mise-en-scene, sound and especially characters. All of these elements combine to create an engaging science fiction thriller that also subtly comments on America’s global status and anxieties about the future.

Madness, Death, And Civilization: Non-European Women Under Patriarchy And Imperialism, Mengying Li
Masters Theses
In light of Wide Sargasso Sea, through which Jean Rhys intends to provide the madwoman Bertha in Jane Eyre with a voice and a life, this thesis attempts to reread Jane Eyre from a postcolonial perspective, arguing that both texts can be read as critiques of the cruelty and inhumanity of European civilization. After the English beat the Spanish at sea, and complete the First Industrial Revolution, it establishes the country as the greatest imperialistic power in the world. The need of labor, raw material, and new market leads them to develop colonies in remote areas like the Caribbean. By …

Coming Home: How Identity Plays A Role In Students Who Study Abroad In An Area That Is Representative Of Their Heritage, Mariana I. Naddaf
Masters Theses
Study abroad participation has more than tripled over the past two decades in the United States and has led to increased research efforts on topics such as the benefits of study abroad and the development of students who study abroad; however, little research exists on students who have heritage connections to the area in which they study abroad. In order to address this need within the field of higher education and study abroad, a hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to explore what factors, if any, affect changes in identity salience for students who study abroad in areas that are …
