John Hill Hewitt was a first generation Native American. His paternal ancestors were of Welsh extraction while his mother 's family ancestry was largely English with some royal Portuguese blood. Hewitt noted that his mother's large Roman nose and curly hair were dominant features among her children} Such features lent him a negro appearance which became a painful stigma for him in the American South during the Nineteenth Century.

In 1847, Joseph Sullivan emigrated to the United States from Kerry, Ireland. Along with him came his wife, Mary, a son, John, a daughter Margaret, and a Mary Sullivan. By 1850 the Sullivan family move to Savannah, Georgia from New York. However, they do not become citizens until 1852. While in Savannah, the Sullivans experience the birth of two daughters-Mary and Ellen. Joseph Sullivan's occupations included being a laborer, porter, janitor. However he worked as a clerk at Southern Bank for ten years. By 1887 Joseph Sullivan's life comes to an end.

Daniel R. Thomas was born in 1843 and died April 7,1916. Married Jeane M. E. Had four children, two died before adulthood. The two that lived were John M. and Jennie T. Danlel R. Thomas wad a coal manufacturer and an insurance agent.He was a. member of the Independent Presbyterian Church. He became an Alderman ln Savannah ln 1883 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1901. Daniel R.
