Henry C. Urban was born on December 27, 1848, in Frank fort, Germany. He attended the Berlin School of Art, where he studied architecture, After one year of mandatory service in the German Army, he went to Paris, where he built several public buildings. There he met William Preston, of Boston, who asked Urban to work for his agency. He agreed, and came to the United States in 1883. He came to Savannah in December of 1888 (on his honeymoon) to supervise the construction of the De Soto Hotel. After that, he built the recently destroyed lndep endent Presbyterian …

On one of his early report cards, a teacher's description of him stated he was "like a windmill." The energies harnessed to come to the United States from France and found a dynamic business was indeed like a windmill. He lived in Savannah from 1868 until his death in 1915 and established a very successful jewelry business which is still in operation today. He was a devoted family man and took an active part in the civic and social activities of his new Savannah home.

Israel Keech Tefft was born in Smithfield, Rhode Island on February 12, 1794. He was educated in Boston and settled in Savannah in 1816 where, he established a hardware business. In 1821 he became joint editor and proprietor of the Georgian. After quitting the business in the same year, Tefft took a position with the Bank of the State of Georgia, of which he was elected Cashier in 1848, a position he filled until his death on June 30, 1862. A man of history and literature, he was one of the founders of the Georgia Historical Society in 1839 and …

John Lowlow was born in Savannah, Georgia, on August 6, 1841. In 1856, he ran away with John Robinson's Circus. For the next half century he would travel with the circus. He be came one of America's most famous clowns during his life time. He died on October 18, 1910, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is buried in Cleveland, Ohio.
