Motivation Is A Myth: Supporting Doctoral Students During The Dissertation Writing Process, Njeri M. Pringle, Jamie Workman

This session brings together the results of two larger bodies of ongoing research, one on dissertation writing groups, and one on dissertation coaching. The purposes of both studies were to determine if participating in either or both initiatives had a positive affect on doctoral students’ dissertation writing process. Data were collected via surveys and interviews over the course of multiple semesters. The session will highlight key findings from both studies. The researchers will also share practical implications they have learned from facilitating writing groups and coaching services, debunking the myth that motivation alone leads to successful dissertation completion.

Spirituality impacts learners’ growth and development, including in value formation, problem-solving, critical reflection, interpersonal collaboration, self-efficacy, belongingness, and the search for purposeful and meaningful life and work. Despite increasing scholarly interest, spirituality remains underexplored in higher education, often due to concerns about proselytizing and the fluidity of the concept across multiple framings.

Recent research positions spirituality as a cross-cultural concept encompassing holistic human growth and development. This perspective underscores the need for further investigation into how spirituality, beyond formal religious practices and affiliations, can be integrated into educational practices. Women with children are significantly less likely to complete doctoral programs than their male or non-mothering peers (National Science Foundation [NSF], 2023). This gap underscores the urgency of addressing higher attrition rates for doctoral mothers and the unique challenges that contribute to their departure from the academy. In 2022-2023, women earned approximately 58% of all doctoral degrees (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2024). In 2021, the NSF (2021a) estimated the median age of women in research doctoral programs at 31.7, with a median time to completion of 5.8 years (NSF, 2021b). Subjective Perspectives On Antarctic Wilderness: An Application Of Integral Ecology, Annabelle G. Mayes

Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have set Antarctica aside for peace, scientific research, and environmental protection. However, they have yet to take concrete actions to protect Antarctica’s wilderness values as agreed under the 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. Meanwhile, pristine areas that are free from human interference are declining as human activity escalates. This study examines perceptions of Antarctic wilderness through the lens of integral ecology. Data from 1,640 people and 16 study populations were extracted from four published studies. A Real-Time Mobile Robotic System For Crack Detection In Construction Using Two-Stage Deep Learning, Emmanuella Ogun, Yong Ann Voeurn, Doyun Lee

Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications

The deterioration of civil infrastructure poses a significant threat to public safety, yet conventional manual inspections remain subjective, labor-intensive, and constrained by accessibility. To address these challenges, this paper presents a real-time robotic inspection system that integrates deep learning perception and autonomous navigation. The proposed framework employs a two-stage neural network: a U-Net for initial segmentation followed by a Pix2Pix conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) that utilizes adversarial residual learning to refine boundary accuracy and suppress false positives. When deployed on an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) equipped with an RGB-D camera and LiDAR, this framework enables simultaneous automated crack detection …
