Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

In addressing the compelling question - How does exploration benefit and/or harm different groups of people?, students consider counternarratives of marginalized groups (i.e., Indigenous Peoples, the crew on Columbus's ship, etc.) as well as the effects of exploration on these groups of people. Through the supporting question - Should we continue to celebrate Columbus Day?, students are engaged in a Claim - Evidence - Reasoning protocol to analyze sources detailing Indigenous life before European arrival as well as the actions of Christopher Columbus and the associated consequences. Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

In this action research project, a high school AP European History teacher explores the impact of novelty-based assessment on student learning and information retention. By replacing traditional lecture and quiz methods with a creative Napoleon eulogy project, the teacher investigated whether novel assessment strategies could enhance student achievement. Students were tasked with researching an individual in Napoleon's orbit and delivering a eulogistic speech, departing from conventional evaluation methods.

The study revealed promising results: student comfort with Napoleonic history increased by 41.9%, and long-essay scores improved by 5.25%. Interestingly, while students did not initially recognize the project's educational value, follow-up assessments …

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

The K-5 social studies curriculum introduces students to foundational knowledge in civics, geography, economics, and history. Social studies is also a vehicle through which students: (a) synthesize content knowledge which in turn supports reading comprehension, (b) learn about community structures around them, and (c) build social-emotional skills through an in-depth understanding of the human condition. Yet, instructional time allocated to social studies has decreased over the past few decades, and scores on national social studies assessments indicate that most students do not attain proficiency in acquiring social studies knowledge. For $k \geq 1$ and a graph $G$ without isolated vertices, a \emph{total distance $k$-dominating set} of $G$ is a set of vertices $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that every vertex in $G$ is within distance $k$ to some vertex of $S$ other than itself. The \emph{total distance $k$-domination number} of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a total $k$-dominating set in $G$ and is denoted by $\gamma_{k}^t(G)$. When $k=1$, the total $k$-domination number reduces to the \emph{total domination number}, written $\gamma_t(G)$; that is, $\gamma_t(G) = \gamma_{1}^t(G)$. A simple graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$ is \emph{$\mathbb{Z}_{k}$-antimagic} if there exists a function $f: E(G) \to \mathbb{Z}_{k} \backslash \{0\}$ such that the induced function $f^+(v)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)} f(uv)$ is injective. The \textit{integer-antimagic spectrum} of a graph $G$ is the set IAM$(G) = \{k: G \textnormal{ is } \mathbb{Z}_k\textnormal{-antimagic and } k \geq 2\}$. A \emph{weak join} of vertex-disjoint graphs is the collection of the graphs with additional simple edges (possibly none) between the original graphs. In this paper, we characterize IAM$(H)$ where $H$ is a weak join of Hamiltonian graphs.

It is conjectured that the mxn grid graph has a prime labeling for all positive integers m and n. It is known that for any prime p and any integer n such that 1≤n≤p², there exists a prime labeling on the pxn grid graph P_m x P_n. Also, it is known that the ladder P₂ x P_n has a prime labeling for all positive integers n. An estimated 20–25% percent of households in the US rely on on-site sanitation via septic tanks to manage their wastewater. Septage management strategies such as land application, treatment at wastewater treatment plants, and treatment at independent septage treatment plants are common regulated and protective processes for managing septage. There can, however, be potentially negative environmental impacts such as groundwater contamination if septic systems are failing or improperly designed. In this perspective, we reimagine septage management at each step of the septage value chain, identify barriers to change, and propose solutions to overcome these existing barriers.
