Voice As A Tool For Learning: Using Personal Narratives To Eliminate Boundaries, Alexandra Reyes
Voice As A Tool For Learning: Using Personal Narratives To Eliminate Boundaries, Alexandra Reyes
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Presentations (1999-2023)
In educational linguistics, educators rely on social interactions and real-world experiences to inform pedagogical practice. Such hands-on learning opportunities are not always accessible to students, due to a variety of external factors. Narratives have long been used as tools for teaching and learning in various contexts, particularly when field experiences are unavailable or unfeasible. Personal narratives can be especially powerful, as they provide insight to others’ lived experiences and transcend cultural, geographic, historical, generational, and linguistic worlds. In this presentation I explore the use of written and video personal narratives as a meaningful supplement to (and potential substitute for) field …

Integrating Mathematics, Science, And Literacy Into A Culturally Responsive Stem After-School Program, Shelli L. Casler-Failing, Alma D. Stevenson, Beverly A. King Miller
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
This manuscript shares the implementation of an after-school literacy in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) program designed for middle grades students to increase their interest in science and mathematics learning. This program was conducted at our local Boys and Girls Club facilities where students learned about four science topics (renewable energy, water cycle, Newton’s laws, and natural disasters). Students participated in culturally responsive reading and writing activities incorporating culturally relevant books, journal writing, hands-on projects, and a culminating science fair presentation on the topic of their choice. The authors determined that using literature, particularly culturally responsive picture books and …

Using A Smart Phone To Learn Spanish: Does It Work And Will Students Use It?, Andrew J. Demil, Alysha Assaf, Ryan Cragun
The Coastal Review
Over time, mobile devices have penetrated the classroom, requiring new and beneficial ways to implement classroom instruction. Research suggests that Short Message Service (SMS) based instruction is an effective tool for acquiring second language (L2) vocabulary and idiom knowledge (Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu,). Additionally, studies have found that students believe that mobile learning (m-learning) is beneficial to acquiring a second language (Cavus & Ibrahim; Hayati, Jalilifar, & Mashhadi; Lu, 2008). This study examined whether m-learning can lead to Spanish vocabulary familiarity and if sentence comprehension outperforms reading definitions. Participants were 29 native English speakers studying Spanish as a second …
“You Can’T Catch ‘Em And Sell ‘Em”: Perceptions Of Obstacles To Direct Marketing Among Georgia Fishers, Jennifer Tookes, Tracy Yandle
“You Can’T Catch ‘Em And Sell ‘Em”: Perceptions Of Obstacles To Direct Marketing Among Georgia Fishers, Jennifer Tookes, Tracy Yandle
Sociology & Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Direct marketing of seafood is a promising avenue for seafood sales in the United States, utilizing local foods venues such as farmers markets and Community Supported Fisheries (CSFs). While interest in locally sourced seafood among local foods communities in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia is high, fishers from coastal Georgia have not filled this profitable niche. We investigate why this opportunity is not exploited by conducting qualitative interviews with twenty-one fishers. Fishers described numerous obstacles to direct marketing, focused on the simultaneous labor investment in on-shore and “on the water” efforts. In addition, fishers’ concerns reveal the financial and social risks …

Fluid Dynamic Analysis Over Turbulent Flows, Bryce Mcguire, Tevin James, Dareon Medley
NSF REU: Propulsion, Aerodynamics & Controls of Aerial Vehicles (2021)
The purpose of this research is to run CFDs (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with several type of objects that consist of the following: 90-Degree Pipe, Combustors, Scramjets, Scramjets with Fuel Injectors, and Airfoils. The sole reasoning is to get a clear understanding of the mechanisms that are ran through by using the computational software called: ANSYS. With this, it will aid into running fluid flows through these objects to observe the desirable variables such as: Velocity, Temperature, Pressure, Total Pressure, Total Temperature, Eddy Viscosity, Turbulence Kinetic Energy, Turbulence Eddy Dissipation, etc.

Analysis Of 30°-90° Blended Winglet Additions To Cessna 172, Piper Malibu, And Boeing 737 Wings, John Crowe, Fernando Ramos
NSF REU: Propulsion, Aerodynamics & Controls of Aerial Vehicles (2021)
The objective of this research is to determine the effect of different cant angle winglet additions to multiple types of aircraft throughout various angles of attack. The winglet design to be studied is the blended winglet. Its cant angle is altered to be 30, 60, and 90 degrees. Three different wings were chosen to be modeled and simulated, each with different geometry to attempt to encompass a wide range of wing types. The three wings were a rectangular wing, a tapered wing, and a swept wing. Those models are represented by the Cessna 172, Piper PA-46, and the Boeing 737-300, …
Characteristics Of Rural Stem Clubs And Implications For Students With Disabilities, Karin M. Fisher, Peggy Shannon-Baker, Kelly Brooksher, Kania Greer
Characteristics Of Rural Stem Clubs And Implications For Students With Disabilities, Karin M. Fisher, Peggy Shannon-Baker, Kelly Brooksher, Kania Greer
Elementary & Special Education: Faculty Publications
There are many benefits for students to participate in extracurricular science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities or clubs. It is also known that students with disabilities (SWD) do not participate as much as their peers without disabilities (SWOD). However, there is a lack of research on SWD and their participation in STEM clubs. This sequential explanatory mixed method study explored teachers’ perceptions of the types and characteristics of STEM clubs and their participants, and their professional development (PD) to work with SWD in their clubs. Findings suggest a variety of STEM clubs are offered with an average of 20 …

Wine Consumer Culture Positioning: Case Of The Global Success Of Yellow Tail And Casillero Del Diablo, Samit Chakravorti
AMTP Proceedings 2021
This paper qualitatively discusses through the lens of consumer cultural positioning literature the global success of two wine brands: Yellow Tail of Casella Wines of Australia and Casillero del Diablo of Concha Y Toro of Chile. These two brands have made meaningful gains in many markets across the globe despite the high fragmentation in the world of wine and have mad themselves stand out as icons of “global” brands in the wine world. Analysis of secondary data reveals that the marketing actions of the two brands align with findings from branding literature. Both brands identified different but meaningful consumer cultural …
Engaging With Customers On Social Media: Insights From Business-To-Business Companies, Emory Serviss
Engaging With Customers On Social Media: Insights From Business-To-Business Companies, Emory Serviss
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Social media are an important part of a company’s ability to directly engage with customers. However, the lack of an established definition of engagement creates challenges for scholars and practitioners attempting to assess return on investment derived from social media marketing. In addition, limited scholarly literature exists regarding how B2B customers specifically react to social media. To enhance understanding of how a B2B company’s social media activity affects customer engagement, this manuscript will examine social media utilization and customer response.

B2b Social Media Marketing: A Content Analysis Of The Role Of Scope On Firm Performance, Nicole Beachum, Marianne Loes, Stacy Wellborn, Catherine Hessick
AMTP Proceedings 2021
Both in the literature and in practice, social media marketing is encouraged for organizations looking to build and maintain relationships with their target markets. However, there is a need to better understand the value of social media marketing specifically for B2B organizations. A review of the literature finds that social network theory, social capital theory, and resource advantage theory offer support for the use of social media marketing to ultimately improve firm performance. This paper leverages text mining and content analysis methodologies to examine the relationship of B2B social media use (in terms of frequency of posts and platforms) and …

The Youtube - Savoring Model: Youtube As A Means Of Increasing Savoring For An Upcoming Consumption Experience, Marc P. Dupont
AMTP Proceedings 2021
YouTube started primarily as a means of entertainment. However, in recent years it has become a platform for both information-seeking and information-giving behaviors. Using the consumption, participation, and production framework for user generated media, YouTube is examined as a platform to influence an individual’s savoring and remembered enjoyment of a consumption experience. This study proposes a model for utilizing YouTube as a means of increasing savoring for an upcoming consumption experience through elaborative processing, minimizing distractions, and encouraging remembered enjoyment.
