Historical Inquiry Deliberation (Hid): The New Republic Lesson Plan, Rhonda Kemp Webb
Historical Inquiry Deliberation (Hid): The New Republic Lesson Plan, Rhonda Kemp Webb
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
The following lesson plan is an example of adapting the Structured Academic Controversy (SAC) format for engaging students in the deliberation of the multiple perspectives for a current societal issue to instead create a procedure for evaluating a historical event or decision. The sample lesson included here for engaging students in this process is entitled “Historical Inquiry Deliberation: The New Republic” and requires students to deliberate the following question:
Which of the competing visions for America’s future was the best approach for the nation at the early stage of its development in the late 18th century?
- Manufacturing: The US …

Building Civil Discourse In Social Studies Through Historical Inquiry Deliberation (Hid), Rhonda Kemp Webb
Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State
This article calls for an increased emphasis on social studies in education and highlights an effective strategy for developing civil discourse skills through what I call Historical Inquiry Deliberation (HID). As social studies educators, we want our students to become engaged in their communities and become the problem solvers of the future. Utilizing the Structured Academic Controversy (SAC) approach builds student confidence, discussion skills, and understanding of the power multiple perspectives can bring to solving a problem. Adapting this technique for analyzing historical content can allow for a collaborative twist to the widely utilized Document Based Question assignment. The article …

Artificial Intelligence History, And Libraries: History And Legacy Of Library Contributions To Machine Learning, Wilhelmina Randtke
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Machine learning seems to be newly everywhere. It's not new, so much as faster processing makes it newly useful. Imagine an automated cataloging program that takes 300 years to run, versus one that takes a week to run. Increased processing speed is a substantive change. This presentation overviews the history of libraries and artificial intelligence. First, teasing out past applications of machine learning in libraries. High quality results and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in libraries have been explored and published for decades. Over time, faster processing allows use at scale. Second, how library and metadata work contributes to machine …

Contemplation Of Improvement Efforts To Manage Combined Sewer Overflows †, Younghan Edwin Jung, Myung Jeong, Hwandon Jun, Trevor Smith
Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications
Combined sewer overflow (CSO) is a significant environmental concern and public health risk (e.g., water contamination, eutrophication, and beach closure). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting program to regulate and address this matter. This program mandates the control of CSOs for more than 700 municipalities obligated to devise Long-term Control Plans (LTCPs) to curb combined sewer overflows and reduce them to safe levels. The LTCP involves diverse strategies, including sewer separation, green infrastructure improvements, and conventional gray infrastructure upgrades. This study investigates several municipalities’ solutions for CSO problems that use conventional …

Peanut Shell Powder As A Sustainable Modifier And Its Influence On Self-Healing Properties Of Asphalt, Bo Wang, Junan Shen, Shuang Li, Wei Wang
Civil Engineering & Construction: Faculty Publications
This paper investigated, for the first time, the feasibility of using peanut shell powder, a plant waste residue, as a modifier for asphalt, particularly its self-healing ability. Modified asphalt samples were prepared using varying particle size ranges and concentrations of peanut shell powder. Various tests, including fatigue–healing–fatigue tests, high- and low-temperature rheological property tests, penetration tests for conventional performance, and atomic force microscopy scans, were conducted to investigate the effects of peanut shell powder on the self-healing performance and other properties of asphalt. The results showed that the porous structure of peanut shell powder was able to absorb light components …
Take A Joy Ride: Applying The Theory Of Interdependence To Library Practice, Kay Coates, Jessica Garner
Take A Joy Ride: Applying The Theory Of Interdependence To Library Practice, Kay Coates, Jessica Garner
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
From the viewpoint of librarianship, when closely examined, the theory of Interdependence emphasizes the shared responsibility between libraries and the patron communities they serve. It can lead to creating inclusive and welcoming environments. Libraries are sensitive to the needs of diverse cultures. Library services are tailored to meet patron needs by training and supporting staff to work effectively with diverse groups. Promoting cross-cultural understanding and supporting lifelong learning libraries can better serve their communities and promote the common goals of literacy, education, and community engagement. Overall, the theory of interdependence highlights the importance of collaboration, partnership and mutual dependence between …
Decolonizing French: Afrophonics In Ken Bugul’S Aller Et Retour (2013), Hapsatou Wane
Decolonizing French: Afrophonics In Ken Bugul’S Aller Et Retour (2013), Hapsatou Wane
The Coastal Review
This article explores the innovative language strategies employed by Senegalese writer Ken Bugul in her novel Aller et retour to construct a dynamic and interconnected linguistic landscape that challenges fixed language boundaries. Ken Bugul's "langue fabriquée" combines elements of French, Wolof, and English, reflecting a transglocal dimension that embodies the essence of afrophonics—a poetics of resistance that empowers local cultures in a globalized context. Through a detailed analysis of Ken Bugul's linguistic choices, including the use of quotation marks, footnotes, and arbitrary transcription, the study reveals how she creates a language that defies categorization and decolonizes French without resorting to …

On Nowhere Zero 4-Flows In Regular Matroids, Xiaofeng Wang, Taoye Zhang, Ju Zhou
Theory & Applications of Graphs
Walton and Welsh proved that if a co-loopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M(K(3,3)),M∗(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow. Lai, Li and Poon proved that if M does not have a minor in {M(K5),M∗(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow. We prove that if a co-loopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M((P10)¯3 ),M∗(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4-flow where (P10)¯3 is the graph obtained from the Petersen graph P10by contracting 3 edges of a perfect matching. History And Current Status Of Mediterranean Spotted Fever (Msf) In The Crimean Peninsula And Neighboring Regions Along The Black Sea Coast, Muniver T. Gafarova, Marina E. Eremeeva
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is a tick-borne rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia conorii subspecies conorii and transmitted to humans by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. The disease was first discovered in Tunisia in 1910 and was subsequently reported from other Mediterranean countries. The first cases of MSF in the former Soviet Union were detected in 1936 on the Crimean Peninsula. This review summarizes the historic information and main features of MSF in that region and contemporary surveillance and control efforts for this rickettsiosis. Current data pertinent to the epidemiology of the disease, circulation of the ticks and distribution of animal hosts are discussed …

Never Too Old For A Field Trip: Exploring Community Assets For Middle Grades Literacy Integration, Christine L. Craddock, Stacie K. Pettit 2949136
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Middle Grades teacher candidates participated in a “field trip” in an Integrated Reading course to model best practices in culturally responsive teaching. The college students visited their downtown city including a regional art museum and memorial sculpture garden commemorating local Black history to experience and contemplate possibilities for literacy integration in their pedagogy. Teacher candidates were encouraged to explore and understand community culture, history, and assets with respect to their future students’ lives, identities, interests, and experiences, and how these considerations should motivate their instructional decision making with literacy applications. A follow-up discussion was facilitated by the course professor along …

Culturally Sustaining Practices In Middle Schools, Chandra Diaz, Rebecca M. Nelson, Laurie A. Ramirez, Nancy B. Ruppert
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
The social unrest during the summer of 2020 in the United States has produced a renewed sense of urgency and agency for the interrogation of curriculum in K-12 education and the development of culturally sustaining practices. This urgency has encouraged more teacher preparation programs to be intentional in developing culturally sustaining teachers. This paper offers four pillars to frame classroom practices to be integrated holistically and support middle level preservice teachers’ development of their culturally sustaining practices. Pillar one focuses on understanding self. The ability to honestly self-reflect and to understand personal practice deeply and continually is critical. Pillar two …

Academic Challenges In Southeastern Middle Schools: Voices Of Teachers And Principals, Michael Dicicco, Ryan Alverson
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
This study seeks to share teachers’ and principals’ voices from middle schools in the Southeastern United States who are attempting to help their students achieve academic success. Obtaining a snapshot of middle schools in the Southeastern United States provides opportunities to recognize trends and identify challenges about the current implementation of middle level programs and practices related to academics. The last large-scale survey was completed over 10 years ago (McEwin & Greene, 2010, 2011) and was focused on principal voices only. When attempting to assess the level of implementation of various school improvement efforts or to gain a deeper understanding …

The Public Health Impact Of Paxlovid Covid-19 Treatment In The United States, Yuan Bai, Zhanwei Du, Lin Wang, Eric H. Y. Lau, Isaac Fung, Petter Holme, Ben Cowling, Alison Galvani, Robert Krug, Lauren Ancel Meyers
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
The antiviral drug Paxlovid has been shown to rapidly reduce viral load. Coupled with vaccination, timely administration of safe and effective antivirals could provide a path towards managing COVID-19 without restrictive non-pharmaceutical measures. Here, we estimate the population-level impacts of expanding treatment with Paxlovid in the US using a multi-scale mathematical model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission that incorporates the within-host viral load dynamics of the Omicron variant. We find that, under a low transmission scenario (Re∼1.2) treating 20% of symptomatic cases would be life and cost saving, leading to an estimated 0.26 (95% CrI: 0.03, 0.59) million hospitalizations averted, 30.61 (95% …

The Lost Fortune Of The Virginiaman: Analyzing The History Of The Beale Ciphers Using Historical Land Grants, Simon E. Rosenbaum
The Lost Fortune Of The Virginiaman: Analyzing The History Of The Beale Ciphers Using Historical Land Grants, Simon E. Rosenbaum
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Since the mid-19th century, the mystery of the Beale ciphers has confounded cryptanalysts, intelligence agencies, historians, and treasure hunters alike. Countless works of scholarship have analyzed the story, the ciphers, and possible locations for the massive buried treasure allegedly in rural Bedford County, Virginia. However, prior methodology applied to historiography on the subject has been unsuccessful in making headway in an understanding of the history and location of the Beale treasure. In examining prior scholarship in conjunction with recorded land grants and associated archaeological scholarship, this paper proposes a new direction for research into the Beale cipher mystery and new …
The Darien Insurrection Of 1899 And The Origins Of The Mcintosh Militia, Elliot Ferro
The Darien Insurrection Of 1899 And The Origins Of The Mcintosh Militia, Elliot Ferro
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The Darien insurrection has been portrayed in historical literature as a lone victory of African American self-defense against racist violence in the Jim Crow south. This portrayal ignores the observable cause of the insurrection as a natural extension of decades of black political organizing in McIntosh County. In beginning to center the story of the Darien insurrection in Darien's home of McIntosh county it becomes clear how the insurrection was not a spontaneous event but a planned protest organized by a long surviving political machine. In recognizing the long history of political organizing by Tunis Campbell, a case can then …

‘Following The Line Of Least Resistance’: African American Women In Domestic Work, 1899–1940, Taylor Simsovic
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper examines the challenges faced by African American women employed in domestic service between 1899 and 1940, with a focus on how race, class, and gender intersected to shape their experiences. Specifically, the study investigates how these women continued to perform reproductive labor as they migrated from the South to Northern states during the Great Migration. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources, the analysis argues that Black women's persistent employment in undervalued labor within white American homes was driven by the mutually constitutive systems of capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy. These systems channeled Black women into …

‘Public Enemy Number One’: The Resistance Of Japanese Americans In Concentration Camps, 1942-1946, Robert K. Coleman
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper explores the defiance of Japanese Americans who were unlawfully imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II, challenging the Model Minority Myth that portrayed them as docile and silent actors. Using court cases, personal stories, newspaper articles, and film analysis, the paper shows how Japanese Americans actively defied their unlawful situation and resisted their oppressors.

Characteristics And Source-Specific Health Risks Of Ambient Pm2.5-Bound Pahs In An Urban City Of Northern Taiwan, Yu-Chieh Ting, Chun-Hung Ku, Yu-Xuan Zou, Kai-Hsien Chi, Jhy-Charm Soo, Chin-Yu Hsu, Yu-Cheng Chen
Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Environmental Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with highly toxic compounds mainly exist in small-sized particles and can induce considerable human health risks. Studies on PM2.5-bound PAHs and their source-specific human health risks still remain scarce. Daily PM2.5 samples (n = 119) were collected every three days from 2016 to 2017 in Taipei city, Taiwan. Fifteen PAHs in PM2.5 were analyzed via gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS). We utilized a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, diagnostic ratios, and potential source contribution function (PSCF) to identify the origins of PM2.5-bound PAHs. The annual concentration of total PAHs (TPAH) was 0.79 ± 0.67 ng …
The Gamma-Signless Laplacian Adjacency Matrix Of Mixed Graphs, Omar Alomari, Mohammad Abudayah, Manal Ghanem
The Gamma-Signless Laplacian Adjacency Matrix Of Mixed Graphs, Omar Alomari, Mohammad Abudayah, Manal Ghanem
Theory & Applications of Graphs
The α-Hermitian adjacency matrix Hα of a mixed graph X has been recently introduced. It is a generalization of the adjacency matrix of unoriented graphs. In this paper, we consider a special case of the complex number α. This enables us to define an incidence matrix of mixed graphs. Consequently, we define a generalization of line graphs as well as a generalization of the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of graphs. We then study the spectral properties of the gamma-signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of a mixed graph. Lastly, we characterize when the signless Laplacian adjacency matrix of …
