Examination Of Early Stage Grey Iron Solidification Through The Development Of Fast-Quench Methodology, James C. Liggett
Examination Of Early Stage Grey Iron Solidification Through The Development Of Fast-Quench Methodology, James C. Liggett
Honors College Theses
As grey iron casting accounts for a significant share of the foundry industry, proper understanding of the effects of solidification and growth mechanisms on the mechanical properties of grey iron is crucial. Prior experimentation has been performed examining early stage solidification and growth of the carbon phase of ductile iron, in which rapid quench samples are obtained which detail austenite-graphite interactions during solidification. This prior experimentation is built upon in though this research and applied to examine the early stage growth of flake graphite in grey iron. The purpose of this research is to validate a proposed fast-quench method by …
An Investigative Study Of Combustion And Emissions With Noise And Vibrations Of Synthetic Fuels Within An Aero-Gas Turbine, Camille J. Phillips
An Investigative Study Of Combustion And Emissions With Noise And Vibrations Of Synthetic Fuels Within An Aero-Gas Turbine, Camille J. Phillips
Honors College Theses
The pollution from the aerospace transportation is rapidly becoming the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The FAA expects aviation emissions to almost triple by 2050, making the aerospace industry responsible for the release of approximately 25% of the global carbon dioxide budget. These aviation emissions, including CO2 and NOx, as well as other GHGs, contribute to the destruction of ozone layer. Carbon dioxide emissions have a particularly negative effect on humans, leading to airway diseases especially in children and elderly. To combat the addition of further GHG emissions into the atmosphere, it is necessary to minimize the usage …

Data Analysis To Evaluate The Performance Of Breathing Masks Used For Filtering Nano-Level Particles At Manufacturing Sites, Gracia M. Dardano
Data Analysis To Evaluate The Performance Of Breathing Masks Used For Filtering Nano-Level Particles At Manufacturing Sites, Gracia M. Dardano
Honors College Theses
The work performed in this research aims to evaluate the performance of commercially available breathing masks in filtering airborne nanoparticles at manufacturing sites. Nanoparticles are found virtually anywhere, from dust in a worksite to a simple sneeze. Therefore, they pose a substantial threat to human health as their velocity and volatility are high. This research analyzes if current efforts of breathing masks to hinder nanoparticles are effective, especially at manufacturing sites. Data has been collected in order to analyze the behavior of nanoparticles and to measure nanoparticle levels at manufacturing sites and its working environment. Data is statistical in nature …

For Good Measure: Assessing The Impact Of Game-Based Instruction In The Archives, Autumn M. Johnson, Dawn Nikki Cannon-Rech
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
Presented at Society of Georgia Archivists annual meeting
Game-based instructional programs can provide creative, hands-on learning opportunities while protecting valuable collections. This presentation will reflect on the experience of using game-based instructional techniques to successfully develop an Escape Game that engaged a campus community with archival sources and authentic learning. Sensory game immersion provided authentic engagement with the materiality of collections, their historical context, and the deeper critical narratives within the collection. Tasks were designed to engage learning objectives that explored archival conceptualization, discovery, and interpretation. The successful program increased awareness of the archival collections throughout the University community …

Improved Signal Performance For Smartphones, Devin A. Ferrell
Improved Signal Performance For Smartphones, Devin A. Ferrell
Honors College Theses
The research project “Improved Signal Performance for Smartphones” involves collecting and analyzing data from a smartphone’s available connections and making the information available in a simple application interface. Due to the data collection/analysis and iOS system framework, several ethical and professional issues will be encountered ranging from individual privacy to company standards/guidelines. These conflicts are addressed, and solutions are provided, along with researching into similar situations that others have reported. By making comparisons between this project and similar approaches, professional and ethical areas of concern can be addressed early into development, or completely avoided. The research project course was properly …
Study On The Viability Of Preparing Plaster Molds For Rapid Prototyping Of Complex Ceramic Parts Using The Lost Pla Method, Shelton F. Fowler Iv
Study On The Viability Of Preparing Plaster Molds For Rapid Prototyping Of Complex Ceramic Parts Using The Lost Pla Method, Shelton F. Fowler Iv
Honors College Theses
In the field of metal casting, cast parts often require an internal cavity to be made to meet design requirements. Frequently, these interior surfaces are not manufacturable through standard machining processes, and even when possible, they would most likely involve expensive and time-consuming operations. In order to avoid these machining costs, expendable ceramic or sand cores are manufactured and placed into the mold to allow the direct casting of complex internal geometries. This research seeks to use relatively inexpensive plastic 3D printing technology and the lost PLA casting process for the production of low-cost and rapidly producible ceramic cores. A …

Cultivating Water Literacy In Stem Education: Undergraduates' Socio-Scientific Reasoning About Socio-Hydrologic Issues, David C. Owens, Destini N. Petitt, Diane Lally, Cory T. Forbes
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
Water-literate individuals effectively reason about the hydrologic concepts that underlie socio-hydrological issues (SHI), but functional water literacy also requires concomitant reasoning about the societal, non-hydrological aspects of SHI. Therefore, this study explored the potential for the socio-scientific reasoning construct (SSR), which includes consideration of the complexity of issues, the perspectives of stakeholders involved, the need for ongoing inquiry, skepticism about information sources, and the affordances of science toward the resolution of the issue, to aid undergraduates in acquiring such reasoning skills. In this fixed, embedded mixed methods study (N = 91), we found SHI to hold great potential as meaningful …
