This research is a qualitative, case study of five women who have successful careers in the male dominated field of athletics. An interview was done with each woman to determine whether her professional/personal life had been affected in any way by the athletic patriarchy and how their experiences were similar or different. The purpose of this research was to examine the influences of the athletic patriarchy on women's athletics and to explore issues of power and gender within these influences. The effects of herbivores and invasive plants on native plants are well known, but few studies have addressed their impacts on rare plants. Threatened or endangered plant species may be more susceptible to negative effects of biotic factors due to their already low distributions. My study quantifies the interactions between deer, an invasive plant, a rare herb and its associated plant community to assist in the conservation of native plants. Trillium reliquum is an endangered spring ephemeral herb that is native to three states in the southeast. Natural and anthropogenic factors work together to influence species habitat use. Kings Bay in Crystal River, Florida serves as critical habitat for the Florida manatee, but is also used extensively by humans. This study documented the seasonal dispersion and behavioral patterns of manatees in Kings Bay with regards to natural and anthropogenic factors from May 2005-June 2006. Survey stations were established across the bay and the number of manatees, people in the water, and boats were counted. The behavioral patterns of four major states were recorded using focal animal observations. During the winter, manatees aggregated in areas containing both springs …

Various commercially important marine species are known to utilize the salt marsh; research has shown that marsh infauna play an important role in the diets of these species. The distribution and abundance of some of these infauna has been shown to be influenced by vegetative cover. In 2001, salt marshes along the coast of Georgia began to die, resulting in the loss of the dominant vegetation. During the summer of 2005, six 0.5 x 0.5 meter quadrats were haphazardly placed and set up permanently in the low marsh at two study sites along the Crooked River in vegetated and unvegetated …

Relationship Between Endogenous Creatine Levels And Maximal Upper Body Strength, Short Term Muscle Recovery And Body Fat In Males, Vincent James Dalbo

Numerous studies have found creatine supplementation to positively enhance performance but no research found has examined the effects of endogenous creatine levels on performance. The purpose of this study was twofold. First we examined correlations between endogenous creatine levels and strength, absolute strength, short term muscle recovery and body fat. We also examined the effects of creatine supplementation with a sufficient washout period on plasma creatinine levels. Participants consisted of 24 healthy men who met with the experimenter twice over a 4 day period. Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), 2001, many school districts across the nation have sought to find new sources to meeting the demands mandated by the legislation. Little research exists on the methods Georgia high schools with small student enrollment utilize to meet annual yearly progress (AYP) as outlined in the NCLB. This study was a mixed-method design gathering quantitative and qualitative data from twenty-eight Georgia high school principals and teachers with a small student enrollment. Fourteen of the twenty-eight counties identified responded to the Survey on Characteristics of Successful Schools. No single question received …

This study focused on the lives of women majoring in science at a two-year institution. The specific research goal was to investigate the lived experiences of first year female science majors at Waycross College, relevant to their career choices. The participants in this study consisted of 6 young women enrolled as science majors in the fall semester of 2005. Two interview sessions were conducted during their first year of study. In polygynous, sexually dimorphic species like the African elephant, Loxodonta africana, resource distribution influences female dispersion, while the location of females shapes male dispersion. Human constriction of viable habitat has affected elephant movements and impact. Elephants travel in matriarchal family groups, as single males or bachelor groups often looking for receptive females, and in mixed associations. Waterholes serve to meet the physical needs of elephants and as areas for information exchange, especially for males in search of females. West Nile Virus is an important arbovirus (virus transmitted by arthropods) that has recently affected the health of both humans and animals in the United States. West Nile fever was first identified in the US in 1999. West Nile virus (WNV), vectored by mosquitoes, has had a detrimental impact on domestic horse health with over 23,000 equine cases in the United States since 1999. Previous research has focused on how this disease progresses and affects equids days to weeks post infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate permanent equine behavioral changes. Are Chemical Defenses Allocated Within Sponges To Defend Regions Most At Risk To Predator Attack?, Christopher John Freeman

The allocation of chemical defenses to regions most at risk to predator attack may provide adequate protection at minimal metabolic cost. This study examined chemical defense allocation within three sponge species from a temperate reef by investigating the predictions that: concentrations of chemical defenses are 1) higher in the outer 2 mm of the sponge tissue, 2) positively correlated with tissue nutritional quality, 3) negatively correlated with sponge structural components, and 4) varied enough to have differential effects on predator deterrence. The concentrations of chemical defenses varied within Ircinia felix and Aplysina fulva, but were equal throughout I. campana. There …
