As biotechnology advances rapidly, a tremendous amount of cancer genetic data has become available, providing an unprecedented opportunity for understanding the genetic mechanisms of cancer. To understand the effects of duplications and deletions on cancer progression, two genomes (normal and tumor) were sequenced from each of five stomach cancer patients in different stages (I, II, III and IV). We developed a phylogenetic model for analyzing stomach cancer data. Orientation Via Enclosure Geometry By Blind-Folded Adults: Evidence Against View-Based Matching Theories Of Spatial Orientation, Marshall L. Green, Katherine A. Gaskin, Jonathan E. Roberts, Bradley R. Sturz

Although spatial orientation via geometric properties of an environment is an ability shared across species, debate remains concerning similarities and differences in the underlying mechanism(s). One theoretical account of spatial orientation suggests that participants match visual memories to current visual perception and navigate to reduce discrepancy between the two. We tested a view-based matching account of spatial orientation by training disoriented and blind-folded human participants to search by touch for a target object hidden in one of four locations marked by distinctive textural cues located in the corners of a rectangular enclosure. An Asymmetry In Shape And Shape Word Interference: Evidence For Core Geometric Knowledge, Joshua E. Edwards, Ty W. Boyer, Bradley R. Sturz

Nativists have postulated fundamental geometric knowledge that predates linguistic and symbolic thought. Central to these claims is the existence of an isolated cognitive system dedicated to processing geometric information. Testing such hypotheses presents challenges due to difficulties in eliminating the combination of geometric and non-geometric information through language. We present evidence using a modified matching interference paradigm that an incongruent shape word interferes with identifying a shape, but an incongruent shape does not interfere with identifying a shape word. This asymmetry in shape and shape word interference suggests that shape words activate spatial representations of shapes but shapes do not …

Cholera Transmission Dynamic Models For Public Health Practitioners, Isaac Chun-Hai Fung
Epidemiology: Faculty Publications (2002-2018)
Great progress has been made in mathematical models of cholera transmission dynamics in recent years. However, little impact, if any, has been made by models upon public health decision-making and day-to-day routine of epidemiologists. This paper provides a brief introduction to the basics of ordinary differential equation models of cholera transmission dynamics. We discuss a basic model adapted from Codeço (2001), and how it can be modified to incorporate different hypotheses, including the importance of asymptomatic or inapparent infections, and hyperinfectious V. choleraeand human-to-human transmission. We highlight three important challenges of cholera models: (1) model misspecification and parameter uncertainty, …

Weighted Inverse Weibull Distribution: Statistical Properties And Applications, Valeriia Sherina, Broderick O. Oluyede

In this paper, the weighted inverse Weibull (WIW) class of distributions is proposed and studied. This class of distributions contains several models such as: length-biased, hazard and reverse hazard proportional inverse Weibull, proportional inverse Weibull, inverse Weibull, inverse exponential, inverse Rayleigh, and Fr´echet distributions as special cases. Properties of these distributions including the behavior of the hazard function, moments, coefficients of variation, skewness, and kurtosis, R´enyi entropy and Fisher information are presented. Estimates of the model parameters via method of maximum likelihood (ML) are presented. Extensive simulation study is conducted and numerical examples are given.
