Gender Differentiation And Gender Hierarchy In C. S. Lewis, Alicia D. Burrus Apr 2014

Gender Differentiation And Gender Hierarchy In C. S. Lewis, Alicia D. Burrus

Honors College Theses

This thesis explores the evidence of sexism in the literary works of C. S. Lewis. Lewis’s relationships with women in his personal life were often estranged, and his works frequently display a predominant view of women as inferior. Each of Lewis’s major fictional works shows evidence of sexism, though such evidence lessens in frequency and prominence with each subsequent work. Lewis’s opinion and portrayal of women did change with his marriage to Joy Davidman Gresham, though his fiction never achieved a complete lack of prejudice against women.

Benefits Of Exercise Intervention In Reducing Neuropathic Pain, John L. Dobson, James L. Mcmillan, Li Li Apr 2014

Benefits Of Exercise Intervention In Reducing Neuropathic Pain, John L. Dobson, James L. Mcmillan, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Peripheral neuropathy is a widespread and potentially incapacitating pathological condition that encompasses more than 100 different forms and manifestations of nerve damage. The diverse pathogenesis of peripheral neuropathy affects autonomic, motor and/or sensory neurons, and the symptoms that typify the condition are abnormal cutaneous sensation, muscle dysfunction and, most notably, chronic pain. Chronic neuropathic pain is difficult to treat and is often characterized by either exaggerated responses to painful stimuli (hyperalgesia) or pain resulting from stimuli that would not normally provoke pain (allodynia). The objective of this review is to provide an overview of some pathways associated with the development …

Fabricating Microfluidic Valve Master Molds In Su‐8 Photoresist, Aaron Dy, Alin Cosmanescu, James Sluka, James Glazier, Dwayne Stupack, Dragos Amarie Apr 2014

Fabricating Microfluidic Valve Master Molds In Su‐8 Photoresist, Aaron Dy, Alin Cosmanescu, James Sluka, James Glazier, Dwayne Stupack, Dragos Amarie

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Multilayer soft lithography has become a powerful tool in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, material and life sciences, and medical research. Complex fluidic micro-circuits require reliable components that integrate easily into microchips. We introduce two novel approaches to master mold fabrication for constructing in-line micro-valves using SU-8. Our fabrication techniques enable robust and versatile integration of many lab-on-a-chip functions including filters, mixers, pumps, stream focusing and cell-culture chambers, with in-line valves. SU-8 created more robust valve master molds than the conventional positive photoresists used in multilayer soft lithography, but maintained the advantages of biocompatibility and rapid prototyping. As an example, we used …

Do Omnivorous Shrimp Influence Mayfly Nymphs In A Tropical Island Stream?, Nicholas A. Macías, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Jonathan W. Duggins, Alonso Ramírez

Biology: Faculty Publications

Interspecific interactions can play an important role in determining habitat selection and resource use between competing species. We examined interactions between an omnivorous shrimp and a grazing mayfly, two co-dominant taxa found in Puerto Rican headwater streams, to assess how predator presence may influence mayfly resource use and instantaneous growth in a tropical rainforest ecosystem. We conducted a series of behavioral and growth experiments to determine the effects of the freshwater shrimp, Xiphocaris elongata, on the growth rate and resource selection of mayfly nymphs in the family Leptophlebiidae. For resource choice assessments, we conducted a series of five day laboratory …

A Novel Three Serum Phospholipid Panel Differentiates Normal Individuals From Those With Prostate Cancer, Nima Patel, Robert L. Vogel, Kumar Chandra-Kuntal, Wayne Glasgow, Uddhav Kelavkar Mar 2014

A Novel Three Serum Phospholipid Panel Differentiates Normal Individuals From Those With Prostate Cancer, Nima Patel, Robert L. Vogel, Kumar Chandra-Kuntal, Wayne Glasgow, Uddhav Kelavkar

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

Background: The results of prostate specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal examination (DRE) screenings lead to both under and over treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). As such, there is an urgent need for the identification and evaluation of new markers for early diagnosis and disease prognosis. Studies have shown a link between PCa, lipids and lipid metabolism. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the concentrations and distribution of serum lipids in patients with PCa as compared with serum from controls.

Method: Using Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) lipid profiling, we analyzed serum phospholipids from age-matched subjects who …

The Influence Of Descriptive Norms On Investment Risk, William J. Montford, Ronald E. Goldsmith Mar 2014

The Influence Of Descriptive Norms On Investment Risk, William J. Montford, Ronald E. Goldsmith

AMTP Proceedings 2014

This study examines the effect of descriptive norm messages (i.e., highlighting what others are doing) on intentions to increase investment risk. Evidence shows that alarming numbers of people nearing retirement insufficiently save for this next life stage. In addition, research finds that differences exist in investment risk tolerance between men and women, with many women investing too conservatively. This finding is of particular concern as women typically experience longer lifespans, thus relying on accumulated savings for longer periods of time. The present study extends work in financial marketing by examining the influences of social norms and peer influence, constructs shown …

A Phylogenetic Model For Understanding The Effect Of Gene Duplication On Cancer Progression, Qin Ma, Jaxk H. Reeves, David A. Liberles, Lili Yu, Zheng Chang, Jing Zhao, Juan Cui, Ying Xu, Liang Liu Mar 2014

A Phylogenetic Model For Understanding The Effect Of Gene Duplication On Cancer Progression, Qin Ma, Jaxk H. Reeves, David A. Liberles, Lili Yu, Zheng Chang, Jing Zhao, Juan Cui, Ying Xu, Liang Liu

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

As biotechnology advances rapidly, a tremendous amount of cancer genetic data has become available, providing an unprecedented opportunity for understanding the genetic mechanisms of cancer. To understand the effects of duplications and deletions on cancer progression, two genomes (normal and tumor) were sequenced from each of five stomach cancer patients in different stages (I, II, III and IV). We developed a phylogenetic model for analyzing stomach cancer data. The model assumes that duplication and deletion occur in accordance with a continuous time Markov Chain along the branches of a phylogenetic tree attached with five extended branches leading to the tumor …

Orientation Via Enclosure Geometry By Blind-Folded Adults: Evidence Against View-Based Matching Theories Of Spatial Orientation, Marshall L. Green, Katherine A. Gaskin, Jonathan E. Roberts, Bradley R. Sturz Mar 2014

Orientation Via Enclosure Geometry By Blind-Folded Adults: Evidence Against View-Based Matching Theories Of Spatial Orientation, Marshall L. Green, Katherine A. Gaskin, Jonathan E. Roberts, Bradley R. Sturz

Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)

Although spatial orientation via geometric properties of an environment is an ability shared across species, debate remains concerning similarities and differences in the underlying mechanism(s). One theoretical account of spatial orientation suggests that participants match visual memories to current visual perception and navigate to reduce discrepancy between the two. We tested a view-based matching account of spatial orientation by training disoriented and blind-folded human participants to search by touch for a target object hidden in one of four locations marked by distinctive textural cues located in the corners of a rectangular enclosure. Following training, we removed the distinctive textural cues …

An Asymmetry In Shape And Shape Word Interference: Evidence For Core Geometric Knowledge, Joshua E. Edwards, Ty W. Boyer, Bradley R. Sturz Mar 2014

An Asymmetry In Shape And Shape Word Interference: Evidence For Core Geometric Knowledge, Joshua E. Edwards, Ty W. Boyer, Bradley R. Sturz

Psychology: Faculty Presentations (2009-2022)

Nativists have postulated fundamental geometric knowledge that predates linguistic and symbolic thought. Central to these claims is the existence of an isolated cognitive system dedicated to processing geometric information. Testing such hypotheses presents challenges due to difficulties in eliminating the combination of geometric and non-geometric information through language. We present evidence using a modified matching interference paradigm that an incongruent shape word interferes with identifying a shape, but an incongruent shape does not interfere with identifying a shape word. This asymmetry in shape and shape word interference suggests that shape words activate spatial representations of shapes but shapes do not …
