A Multilevel Analysis Of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Effect On Preterm Births In Georgia, Usa, Wei Tu, Jun Tu, Stuart H. Tedders Sep 2015

A Multilevel Analysis Of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Effect On Preterm Births In Georgia, Usa, Wei Tu, Jun Tu, Stuart H. Tedders

Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications

This study estimates the neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) effect on the risk of preterm birth (PTB) using multilevel regression (MLR) models. Birth data retrieved from year 2000 and 2010 Georgia Vital Records were linked to their respective census tracts. Principle component analysis (PCA) was performed on nine selected census variables and the first two principal components (Fac1 and Fac2) were used to represent the neighborhood-level SES in the MLR models. Two-level random intercept MLR models were specified using 122,744 and 112,578 live and singleton births at the individual level and 1613 and 1952 census tracts at the neighborhood level, for …

The Impact Of The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique On Course Evaluations, Trent W. Maurer, Jerri Kropp Sep 2015

The Impact Of The Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique On Course Evaluations, Trent W. Maurer, Jerri Kropp

Human Ecology: Faculty Publications

This project reports the results of two studies that investigated the impact on course evaluations of using partial credit iterative responding (PCIR) with the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF-AT) forms on summative course assessments. This project also quantifies grade inflation from utilizing different PCIR schemes and documents the percentage of possible partial credit students learned. Study 1 compared evaluations in courses where exams were manipulated. Study 2 compared evaluations in courses where daily reading quizzes were manipulated. Results from Study 1 revealed that multiple course evaluation scores increased 10% in the PCIR condition. Students earned 75% of the partial credit …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti Aug 2015

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part I—A Background Independent Geometrical And Logical Exposition Of Dirac 3-Polarizer Experiment, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and bipolar dynamic logic (BDL) are introduced based on bipolar complementarity – a logical extension to Niels Bohr’s particle-wave YinYang duality principle. Complete geometrical background independence is proposed and BQG is proven completely background independent which leads to the notion of bipolar quantum superposition – an equilibrium-based logical approach to superposition. It is shown that the logical linearity of BDL can be unified with the physical nonlinearity of bipolar dynamic equilibrium. It is proven that a single polarized photon as a BQA can be logically channeled through the three polarizers in Dirac’s …

Yinyang Bipolar Quantum Geometry And Bipolar Quantum Superposition Part Ii—Toward An Equilibrium-Based Analytical Paradigm Of Quantum Mechanics And Quantum Biology, Wen-Ran Zhang, Francesco Marchetti

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In Part I of this paper, YinYang bipolar quantum agent (BQA), bipolar quantum geometry (BQG) and 2-dimensional generic bipolar quantum superposition are introduced with a geometrical and logical exposition of Dirac 3-polarizer experiment. While the exposition qualifies BQG as a geometry of light, it is shown in this paper that the logical exposition can be extended to an analytical paradigm of quantum mechanics and quantum biology. It is shown that BQG as the geometry of light is also the geometry of Nature with a logical unification of matter and antimatter atoms into a bipolar quantum cellular automaton (BQCA) through multidimensional …

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach Aug 2015

A Survey Of Mathematical Models Of Dengue Fever, James P. Braselton, Iurii Bakach

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we compare and contrast five models of dengue fever, a serious illness that affects tropical and subtropical areas around the world. We evaluate each model using different scenarios and identify the strengths and weakness of each of the models. The goal of our analysis is to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of current mathematical models of dengue fever that should assist future researchers in forming models that accurately measure the variables they are studying that affect the spread and progression of the disease.

Evidence For The Persistence Of Food Web Structure After Amphibian Extirpation In A Neotropical Stream, Thomas R. Barnum, John M. Drake, Jose Checo Colón-Gaud, Amanda T. Rugenski, Therese C. Frauendorf, Scott Connelly, Susan S. Kilham, Matt R. Whiles, Karen R. Lips, Catherine M. Pringle Aug 2015

Biology: Faculty Publications

Species losses are predicted to simplify food web structure, and disease‐driven amphibian declines in Central America offer an opportunity to test this prediction. Assessment of insect community composition, combined with gut content analyses, was used to generate periphyton–insect food webs for a Panamanian stream, both pre‐ and post‐amphibian decline. We then used network analysis to assess the effects of amphibian declines on food web structure. Although 48% of consumer taxa, including many insect taxa, were lost between pre‐ and post‐amphibian decline sampling dates, connectance declined by less than 3%. We then quantified the resilience of food web structure by calculating …

Water Transport And The Functional Dynamics Of Aquaporins In Osmoregulatory Organs Of Fishes, Steffen S. Madsen, Morton B. Engelund, Christopher P. Cutler Aug 2015

Water Transport And The Functional Dynamics Of Aquaporins In Osmoregulatory Organs Of Fishes, Steffen S. Madsen, Morton B. Engelund, Christopher P. Cutler

Biology: Faculty Publications

Aquaporins play distinct roles for water transport in fishes as they do in mammals—both at the cellular, organ, and organismal levels. However, with over 32,000 known species of fishes inhabiting almost every aquatic environment, from tidal pools, small mountain streams, to the oceans and extreme salty desert lakes, the challenge to obtain consensus as well as specific knowledge about aquaporin physiology in these vertebrate clades is overwhelming. Because the integumental surfaces of these animals are in intimate contact with the surrounding milieu, passive water loss and uptake represent two of the major osmoregulatory challenges that need compensation. However, neither obligatory …

Assistant Prof. Jeff Schmuki (Georgia Southern) and Associate Professor Wendy DesChene (Auburn University)

The ArtLab is an off-grid, solar powered 10-foot trailer that houses a mobile art space/laboratory or ArtLab. The ArtLab provides the stage for native plant gardens and solar powered light tents that attract moths and other insects for a non-destructive survey. The Moth Project shares the importance of pollinators in the environment through a hands-on community/citizen science and art experience. Research was compiled into a free downloadable field guide of the local moths found on the Georgia Southern campus that will interest in sustainability …

Design of High Speed Computer Networks Aimed at Reducing Energy Consumption and Carbon Emission at Georgia Southern University

Danda B. Rawat, PhD ($31,065.40)

The main focus of this research was to design OpenFlow based networks that will result in high-speed computer networks and dramatic reductions of energy consumption and carbon emission. An experimental OpenFlow based network was established and tested in the CWiNs lab of Georgia Southern University with the specific purpose of demonstrating the significant energy savings and reduction in carbon waste that can be achieved while providing reliable and fast networking services at Georgia Southern University.
