National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

Cabarrus STARS is a comprehensive program designed to promote positive youth development for minority male youth through a combination of system-, group-, and individual-level services. Program staff will discuss the successes and challenges they experience in working with a variety of schools, students, and families. Ideal for student support staff and community-based organizations focused on adolescent health.

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

Youth suicide is a preventable tragedy that can occur when children's mental health needs are unmet. Participants will discuss published research on risk factors for youth suicide, how to implement an evidence-based prevention program, and how to tackle common obstacles encountered. Participants will be prepared to mobilize school staff, parents, and community members to address the critical issues of depression awareness and suicide prevention.

Black Girlhood: Reshaping The Identity And Improving The Well-Being Of African American Girls, Karla La'toya Sapp Ed.D

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

The identity and overall well-being of African American girls tends to be influenced, both positively and negatively, by the following factors: mass media, gender roles, and environmental factors. Black Girlhood examines the identity development of African American girls utilizing the relational developmental systems theory framework. Black Girlhood also explores the role that mass media, gender roles, and environmental factors shape how African American girls view themselves, while providing interventions that can allow the reshaping of their identity and improvement in their overall well-being.

No Child Left Behind: Barriers For Youth Aging Out Of Foster Care, Wanda D. Davidson, Alphonso Underwood

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

This presentation will explore the effects of foster care on the attainment of education for youth aging out of foster. There are studies that suggest that older youth and youth of color, are particularly vulnerable to systemic issues which may hinder educational success. The presentation will review research that seek to identify specific barriers to educational success and the role of children services, social workers, teachers and the department of education.

Collective Impact: The Strategies And Realities Of Implementing A ‘Shared Youth Vision’, Ken Karamichael, Larry Katz, Sara Nolan

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

“Collective Impact” will demonstrate innovative approaches to partnership and funding models in urban youth programming in response to the emerging trend of collective impact funding initiatives. This workshop will highlight successful work within the Rutgers University network, with emphasis on effective strategies for fund diversity, partnership development, and tools in data collection, school enrollment, student retention and program evaluation.

Since its establishment in June 2007, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) has substantially contributed to advancing conservation of Georgia’s fragile coastal environment, endangered species, and “species of concern”, particularly sea turtles and diamondback terrapins. The GSTC’s conservation strategy works through an integrated approach merging rehabilitation, research and education. As such the GSTC offers a wide variety of educational programs to our K-12 audience, including several career based options designed for an audience of 7th grade and up and correlated to state and national curriculum standards. The Progesterone Receptor - To Be Or Not To Be: The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Progesterone In Raw 264.7 Cells, Christopher I. Brandon Jr., Bagie George

In addition to its reproductive role, progesterone (P4) also has anti-inflammatory effects. While the precise mechanisms have never been clearly elucidated in RAW 246.7 cells, it seems logical to assume that this response is a consequence of the activation of the progesterone receptor (P4-R). However, it has been shown that in a rat model this anti-inflammatory effect is independent of the progesterone receptor. In this project, the aim was to characterize this response by assaying nitric oxide production from lipopolysaccharide-challenged RAW cells. Selected On-Demand Medical Applications Of 3d-Printing For Long-Duration Manned Space Missions, Andres L. Carrano

Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)

Recent technological advances in the area of Additive Manufacturing (i.e. 3D printing) allow for exploration of their use within long-duration manned space missions. Among the many potential application domains, medical and dental fabrication in support of crew health is of interest to NASA’s Advanced Exploration Systems directorate. A classification of medical events with their associated response timeline discern between those applications where current 3D printing technologies can provide adequate support. Products and devices that require on-demand fabrication (due to the high level of personal customization) but that can wait for a reasonable (e.g. few hours) fabrication time are the most …
