OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Despite the high prevalence of individuals diagnosed with sickle cell disease (SCD) in Tennessee, comprehensive care and education for patients with SCD is not as widely available as healthcare services for individuals managing other chronic illnesses. We aimed to engage SCD stakeholders in patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) as a mechanism for advancing care and translational research for this rare disease population. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Through a partnership with the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee, we implemented Community Health Ambassadors to systematically engage patient partners with SCD and their caregivers, aged 18–50 from rural and urban communities throughout Tennessee, in …

Layers Of Estrangement: Social-Emotional And Educational Implications Of Homelessness On K–12 Students, Rajni Shankar-Brown

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This qualitative case study examines and illuminates the social-emotional and educational experiences of children ages 5 to 18 residing in an urban, family emergency housing shelter located in the Southeastern region of the United States. Data were collected and triangulated through participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Findings revealed deep educational estrangement and adverse impacts on the social-emotional development of children and youth experiencing homelessness. The study suggests an urgent need to provide high-quality educational preparation to public school administrators and teachers working with children living in poverty and experiencing homelessness in the U.S. With persistent and rising child …

Guided imagery is a valuable intervention strategy that can benefit children who are at risk for social, academic, and mental health problems. Guided imagery is a technique that employs imagination, emotions, and a spectrum of bodily senses (Naparstek, 1994). This particular technique can be applied in community and academic settings to help enhance self-efficacy and mental health functioning for youth at risk. The need to implement creative interventions for youth can be overlooked by the chaos of poverty and social problems in vulnerable communities. In this interview, Eric Jensen, an internationally recognized speaker and writer on student poverty and brain-based learning, discusses how the educational mindsets and practical strategies from his latest two books, Poor Students, Rich Teaching: Mindsets for Change (2016) and Poor Students, Richer Teaching: Mindsets for Change (2017), can enrich the learning of students in poverty. Some of the new mindsets include how to enrich classroom relationships, student achievement, student engagement, and school climate for student success.

Do Eye Movements During Shape Discrimination Reveal An Underlying Geometric Structure?, Bradley R. Sturz, Ty W. Boyer, John F. Magnotti, Kent D. Bodily

Using a psychophysical approach coupled with eye-tracking measures, we varied length and width of shape stimuli to determine the objective parameters that corresponded to subjective determination of square/rectangle judgments. Participants viewed a two-dimensional shape stimulus and made a two-alternative forced-choice whether it was a square or rectangle. Participants’ gaze was tracked throughout the task to explore directed visual attention to the vertical and horizontal axes of space. Behavioral results provide threshold values for two-dimensional square/rectangle perception, and eye-tracking data indicated that participants directed attention to the major and minor principal axes. Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is regarded as an emerging paradigm for connected vehicles to exchange their information with other vehicles using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications by forming a vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), with roadside units using vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communications. IoV offers several benefits such as road safety, traffic efficiency, and infotainment by forwarding up-to-date traffic information about upcoming traffic. For instance, IoV is regarded as a technology that could help reduce the number of deaths caused by road accidents, and reduce fuel costs and travel time on the road.
