Fight Navigator: Exploring The Feasibility Of A Retaliatory Violence Prevention Program To Help Youth Manage The Code Of The Street, James Barrett, William Pollack, Elizabeth Janopaul-Naylor, Marvin So, Vincenzo Teran, Elizabeth Stilwell

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Violence remains the leading cause of injury and death for people between the ages of 15 and 24 and presents a challenge for communities of color. Better understanding of the context surrounding violence is critical in order to develop effective prevention interventions. We conducted a two-phase, qualitative, feasibility study to develop and initially evaluate a retaliatory violence program, Fight Navigator. Focus groups (n=20) and semi-structured case vignette interviews (n=20) were conducted with the target population that were analyzed using a consensual qualitative research approach. Findings suggest that participants were more likely to believe that conflicts could be resolved without violence …

Braving The Wilderness: The Quest For True Belonging And The Courage To Stand Alone – A Book Review, Chasity D. Tompkins

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, flipped the script on courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy in personal and professional situations through her research, writing, and scholarship. Widely known for her TED talks on these topics, including The Power of Vulnerability over ten years ago in Houston, in 2017, Brown released “Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone”, a self-help memoir, in the United States by Random House. In this review, I provide a highlight of each chapter in relation to its use for practitioners working in community-engaged programs with urban youth at-risk.

Encompassing A Sense Of Belonging With Youth: Art-Based Exploration In Urban Gardening, Chasity D. Tompkins, Casey D. Mull, Nykita Howell, Lori Bledsoe

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This article showcases an arts-based project incorporating designs from youth participants in Project GROWL (Growing Real Opportunities in Work and Life). Project GROWL incorporates agricultural and environmental education with personal and professional development skills. Youth participants actively engage in an urban garden. These paintings were completed by youth and sprayed with a clear overcoat to protect them from the weather. All paintings and bee boxes were placed strategically around the urban garden to promote visual stamina for human and pollinating visitors. By creating these art pieces for the garden, youth found a deeper sense of belonging with this outdoor space. …

Increasing Student Academic Outcomes Through Intentional Layering Of Academic Intervention And Navigation Supports, Heather Krenzer, Donna Meyer Ms Mar 2020

Increasing Student Academic Outcomes Through Intentional Layering Of Academic Intervention And Navigation Supports, Heather Krenzer, Donna Meyer Ms

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

EnCompass: Resources for Learning, an educational non-profit organization in Rochester NY, established in 2002, started providing targeted academic support to students through small group instruction, teaching study skills and executive functioning skills, test preparation, and after school programming through collaboration with the Rochester City School District and several local charter schools. While these programs and services directly supported students’ academic progress, it became increasingly clear that many students who need the additional support had sporadic attendance, and in some cases faced much greater barriers as a result traumatic life experiences, including living in conditions of poverty. The organization determined that …

Perceived Credibility Of Child Sexual Abuse Reporting, Bridget Lashbaugh-Barney Jan 2020

Perceived Credibility Of Child Sexual Abuse Reporting, Bridget Lashbaugh-Barney

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Understanding factors that could influence attitudes and beliefs regarding child sexual abuse may inform efforts to educate clinicians, legal and medical personnel, and even the public on potential sources of bias and barriers to treatment and other service utilization, particularly in rural communities. The purpose of the current study was to experimentally investigate the impact of child accuser age and gender and participant rural status on ratings of perceived credibility of child sexual abuse allegations described in vignettes. With this study, I aimed to not only clarify and update previous findings on accuser age and gender, but also to expand …

Mental Health Outcomes, Parenting Skills And Family Functioning Of Adult And Family Treatment Court Participants, Carolyn A. Malone, Jessica S. Rogers, Wendy P. Guastaferro, Daniel J. Whitaker

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Parental substance use places children at risk for poor social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes. Many parents with substance use disorders (SUD) are treated through accountability drug courts including adult drug courts (ADC) through the criminal justice system and family drug treatment courts (FTC) through the child welfare system. Little is known about the children of parents who participate in treatment through adult drug courts, which could serve as an important treatment venue for improving child outcomes. Children treated through family treatment courts are often the center of treatment. This research compared outcomes of parents and children involved in adult …
