The Interview Project: A Way Of Bridging Theory And Practice In Early Childhood Mathematics Preservice Teacher Education, Doris Santarone
The Interview Project: A Way Of Bridging Theory And Practice In Early Childhood Mathematics Preservice Teacher Education, Doris Santarone
Georgia Educational Researcher
Twenty-nine early childhood preservice teachers (PSTs) participated in an Interview Project. The project’s goals were for the PSTs to apply their knowledge of research on children’s mathematics in their interactions with a child and to learn to listen to and learn from children. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the project and determine whether it met these goals. Pre and post data were collected, and I found that the PSTs showed a significant improvement in their ability to describe and analyze a child’s mathematics and to use their listening to make appropriate instructional decisions. In addition, I found …

The Effects Of Mood On Empathy, Openness To Diversity, Attitudes, And Willingness To Help Marginalized Groups, Angela J. Adams
The Effects Of Mood On Empathy, Openness To Diversity, Attitudes, And Willingness To Help Marginalized Groups, Angela J. Adams
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Members of marginalized groups such as lesbian women and gay men are often at an increased risk of threat or harm compared to their heterosexual counterparts. They may experience prejudice in the form of discrimination and stigma related behaviors. Due to the stigma lesbian women and gay men face throughout various stages of their lives, it is important to examine and discover which factors increase more acceptance and empathy. Additionally, it is important to examine ways to increase positive regard and reduce discrimination in order to promote psychological and overall wellbeing for lesbians and gay men. Given what we know …

Lessons Learned From A Nontraditional Sports Program: Crossfit Kids For Youth At Risk, Christina M. Gipson, Tamerah Hunt, Michael T. Moore
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Offering youth, especially youth at risk, access to something different has the opportunity to allow participants to discover new passions and interests. A nontraditional sports program was offered to middle school students who were members of the local Boys and Girls Club during the 2015–2016 academic year. Identifying a program focusing on CrossFit was valuable because CrossFit Kids programming is geared to develop the whole child addressing health and lifestyle choices and social responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to describe the program, examine what worked and did not work, and note what changes were made based on the …

Mental Health Stigma And Help-Seeking In A College Sample: Barriers And Potential Motivators For Action, Christina H. Morris
Mental Health Stigma And Help-Seeking In A College Sample: Barriers And Potential Motivators For Action, Christina H. Morris
Honors College Theses
Stigma surrounding mental health is one of many barriers impeding help-seeking behavior. This study had two aims: (1) to examine the relationships between mental wellbeing, internalized stigma, help-seeking attitudes, and demographic variables such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and marital status, and (2) to explore what hinders students in the help-seeking process and determine what would make students more likely to seek psychological help if they perceive a need for it. It was hypothesized that the relationship between internalized stigma and help-seeking attitudes would be moderated by gender, and the relationship between mental wellbeing and help-seeking attitudes would be mediated …
Analysis Of The Economic Development Of Statesboro, Georgia’S Blue Mile: A Structural Approach For Diversification, Cadence Dwyer
Analysis Of The Economic Development Of Statesboro, Georgia’S Blue Mile: A Structural Approach For Diversification, Cadence Dwyer
Honors College Theses
The Blue Mile has become a center for Statesboro’s Economic Development plan of business diversification and downtown revitalization. Downtown revitalization is important not only to existing businesses but also to expanding the property tax base. The gauging of revitalization and diversification in the field of community development has been overlooked in favor of qualitative generalizations. Burayidi’s Scorecard is used as a basis to establish a standard for the structural analysis tests conducted to measure business diversification.

Scandalous By Profession: Opera In Eighteenth-Century Europe, Felicity Moran
Scandalous By Profession: Opera In Eighteenth-Century Europe, Felicity Moran
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Opera, as one of the most important art forms of the eighteenth century, bequeathed to its singers a strong position of prestige. And yet, a stigma of social disreputability hung over these same performers. This article examines that paradox first by looking at the importance of opera in the cultural centers of Naples, Paris, and London. From this foundation follows a closer study of the origins of stage performers, and from there, an examination of the on and off-stage behavior of opera singers in the eighteenth century that contributed to the negative image they projected onto society. Finally, the article …

Having Pride In Your Work: How To Serve Lgbt Older Adults Better, James Moorhead Jr.
Having Pride In Your Work: How To Serve Lgbt Older Adults Better, James Moorhead Jr.
Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)
Common misconceptions about older adults include that all older adults are heterosexual. This is merely a myth. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults live in all states and territories of the United States and all parts of Georgia, from the rolling mountains in the north to the humid swamps of the south. Understanding the needs of this unique population is critical for gerontologists as the Baby Boomer generation ages, who tend to be more “out” and self-identify with pride. More importantly, LGBT older adults have been accessing needed services, often returning to the proverbial closet (Maddox, 2010). This …
