Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan Oct 2019

Opioids And Older Adults-Is There A Problem?, Jennifer E. Hogan

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

The Opioid epidemic affects people of all ages; racial, ethnic, sexual and gender minorities; income classes; and geographic areas. Older adults are among the groups affected by this problem because they often use prescription opioids to cope with painful chronic conditions or surgery. Older adults may develop an opioid use disorder, may be a target for crime since they have opioids in the home or maybe raising their grandchildren due to their adult child's addiction. Three different impacts with different needs in terms of resources and referrals.

Disaster Preparedness For The Medically At Risk Non Institutionalized Population, Jennifer E. Hogan

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Attendees will learn about the medically at risk non institutionalized populations. Presenter will differentiate between vulnerable populations, functional and access needs and medically at risk populations for disaster planning purposes. Attendees will also learn specific strategies on disaster planning with any client who is medically at risk. Presenter will review a specific case example: disaster planning with a person on dialysis.

Relationship Between Self-Report And Observed Parenting Among Parents In Treatment Versus Not In Treatment Populations, Rabab Zahidi, Jessica S. Rogers, Wendy P. Guastaferro, Daniel J. Whitaker Oct 2019

Relationship Between Self-Report And Observed Parenting Among Parents In Treatment Versus Not In Treatment Populations, Rabab Zahidi, Jessica S. Rogers, Wendy P. Guastaferro, Daniel J. Whitaker

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Most maltreatment, by definition, is a failure of parenting. However, even without maltreatment, poor parenting can lead to a variety of negative outcomes including social, emotional and behavioral problems. Given that parenting plays a key role in child outcomes, one of the foci of interventions are parenting programs. Interventions for parents must be evaluated using standardized assessment tools, which leads to an important question; how can we best assess parenting? Observational methods (observing a parent and child interact) are often regarded as the gold standard in the assessment of parental behaviors but are cumbersome to administer. Self-reports of parenting …

Introduction: The Culture Of Jesuit Erudition In An Age Of Enlightenment, Jeffrey D. Burson Aug 2019

Introduction: The Culture Of Jesuit Erudition In An Age Of Enlightenment, Jeffrey D. Burson

History: Faculty Publications

Although works on religious, specifically Catholic, and more specifically Jansenist, contributions to the Enlightenment abound, the contributions of the Jesuits to the Enlightenment have remained relatively unexplored since Robert R. Palmer initially identified affinities between Jesuit thought and the emergence of the French Enlightenment as long ago as 1939. Accordingly, this introduction and the essays contained within the pages of this special issue revisit and further explore ways in which the individual Jesuits contributed to broader patterns of European intellectual and cultural history during the age of Enlightenment. Taken together, the contributions to this special issue investigate different aspects of …

Developing As A College Science Teacher: Using Identity To Examine Transformation, Robert J. Ceglie Sr., John Settlage May 2019

Developing As A College Science Teacher: Using Identity To Examine Transformation, Robert J. Ceglie Sr., John Settlage

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Guided by identity theory, this study investigated how a college biology professor’s early career experiences contributed to the transformation of his identity as a college science teacher. This study showcases the four components of identity as described by Gee as a lens and it specifically focuses on the emergent role of institutional identity and its associated conflicts with incompatible belief systems. This qualitative study illustrated the utility of Gee’s theory to study how various components of identity can be useful to examine the transformation of a college faculty member. The participant’s position as a non-tenured faculty member created dissonance between …

First Semester Academic Functioning Of College Students: The Role Of Stressful And Traumatic Life Events, Ashlee Warnecke, Richard Lewine

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The present study sought to better understand the role of stress and trauma history and resiliency among students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and their college academic outcomes. Self-reported history of stressful and traumatic life events, resilience, and demographic factors were collected at orientation for 54 “poor” students as determined by Federal standards. Academic record information was collected at the end of the first semester. The study sample was similar to other students in terms of event exposure, self-reported mental health symptoms, and resilience. Event exposure significantly correlated with course withdrawals, low grades (Fs and Ds), and mean grade point average.. …

Changing Future Faculty's Conceptions Of Sotl, Darryl Reano, Stephanie Masta, Jon Harbor May 2019

Changing Future Faculty's Conceptions Of Sotl, Darryl Reano, Stephanie Masta, Jon Harbor

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) programs provide graduate students across all disciplines with professional development that addresses a range of faculty responsibilities. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) combines education research with the practice of teaching by implementing, disseminating, and applying research on educational practice and interventions. During a PFF program at a public university, we used a pre-post writing prompt to examine changes in future faculty’s conceptions of SoTL. Pre-workshop responses included misconceptions that indicated unfamiliarity with SoTL. Post-workshop responses had an increased emphasis on sharing outcomes from educational interventions. Only 8% of pre-workshop responses included all main elements …

Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele May 2019

Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele

Honors College Theses

Understanding the struggle that is peaceful protest is a task that has two unexplored components. The first is how leaders of political movements and protest groups are able to influence the masses to not waiver in their non-violent, peaceful approach. The second is how political groups learn from the failures and successes of the previous campaigns. We are given these circumstances where governmental violence and abuse would normally lead to a retaliatory response from groups, but in order to maintain the fidelity of the movement leaders of these political protests have to protect the nonviolent approach. These are instances where …

The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd Apr 2019

The Effect Of Perceived Level Of Social Support On The Fear Of Falling, Kali A. Todd

Honors College Theses

Background: Perhaps the most prevalent cause of anxiety among the elderly is the fear of falling (FOF), considering that a fall can lead to serious complications and the decline of health. Kumar et al. found that subjects with a FOF usually have less social support. Therefore, increased social support could possibly decrease the FOF, thus decreasing the likelihood of a fall overall. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the amount of perceived social support one receives and the FOF among people ages 60 and up. Methods: In order to measure FOF and social support among …

Hispanic Stereotypes In Contemporary Film, Emily M. Pressler Apr 2019

Hispanic Stereotypes In Contemporary Film, Emily M. Pressler

Honors College Theses

Stereotypes are present even in the most popular films. Groups of people are often misrepresented in a way that is entertaining, but not necessarily truthful, causing viewers to have a narrow, often incorrect, view of a particular culture or people. This research serves as an analysis of selected contemporary American films that feature a Hispanic character or cultural element. My aim is twofold: first, to shed light on the stereotypes surrounding Hispanics and the excessive appearance of these stereotypical representations in popular U.S. films, and second, to promote open-mindedness by educating others on the cultural diversity of Spanish speakers, especially …
