Sophisticated Vs. Rugged: Examining Gendered Brand Communication Styles And Social Media Engagement, Joanne T. Cao, Jamye Foster, Gallayanee S. Yaoyuneyong, Lacey K. Wallace

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Advertising and marketing managers understand that not all brands need to be on social media, but what is not clearly understood is consumers’ engagement expectations for brands that are on social media. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of brand personality, specifically sophisticated and rugged brands, and gendered communication styles on consumers’ expectations of social media engagement. A scenario-based experiment is performed to test the hypotheses using a mock brand. The main study consisted of a Qualtrics consumer panel, and a MANOVA was utilized to examine three components of social media engagement (consumption, contribution, and creation) on the two brand …

Chamber Of Commerce Membership: An Explanatory Model Of Member Organizations’ Normative, Continuance And Affective Commitments, Shawn F, Clouse, Simona Stan, Nader H. Shooshtari

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Organizations join associations to gain a wide range of benefits, such as advocacy in the local community, more expertise, or access to markets and new technologies. However, these benefits do not always result in readily observable positive outcomes as compared to the monetary costs and time investment for businesses. Such value judgements may result in lower commitment to the association and ultimately dropped memberships. The purpose of this study is to better understand the factors that drive member organizations’ commitment to a chamber of commerce. The results of the empirical study show a positive impact of members’ role expectancies and …

Tri-Party Collaborative Course Design: Proposal Of A Framework For Higher Education Courses, Rafael Chiuzi

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This article presents a tri-party collaborative course-design framework using a case study based on the launch of a new 4th year course at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, Department of Management. This study employed a multi-method qualitative approach consisting of a survey, followed by three focus groups with distinct stakeholder groups: students, industry practitioners, and academics. The results revealed a surprising overlap of interests among the different groups, with the data supporting the design of the new course, which was launched in the Fall of 2022. In addition, data from current students indicated robust positive acceptance of both the course …

Tilting It Forward: The Transparency Model Of Assessment As A Scaffold For Secondary Teacher Education, Nancy L. Remler Jan 2023

Tilting It Forward: The Transparency Model Of Assessment As A Scaffold For Secondary Teacher Education, Nancy L. Remler

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Even though K-12 educators must assess student learning and adjust instruction based on learning data, many teachers lack confidence in their ability to assess. Because low confidence levels may be due to inadequate teacher preparation, this study invokes the pivotal SoTL project, Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT), as it examines TILT’s impact on twelve undergraduate ELA teacher candidates (TCs). The hypothesis was that TILT would not only enhance undergraduate TCs’ learning outcomes in an ELA methods course, but also scaffold their early development of assessment literacy. Findings support the hypothesis but indicate that TCs would benefit from additional instruction …

Salient Factors In Predicting Student Success, Including Course Modality, David P. Nalbone, Minoo Ashoori, Bankole K. Fasanya, Michael W. Pelter, Adam Rengstorf

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Much discussion in higher education has focused upon predicting student learning, and how to identify students who may be at particular risk of failure. Little research has actually tackled that challenge, and research on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in this areas is scarce; this study does so by measuring students across three semester of study in a variety of courses and course formats. Our results indicate that a set of characteristics predicting student success can be identified, and that course modality affects overall student success rate. Our results are discussed in terms of how they might inform …

Sense Of Belonging On A Consolidated Campus: A Mixed Methods Exploration Of Student Perceptions, Amy D. Smith

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the extent to which a subset of students who matriculated post-consolidation at the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University felt they belong at their institution. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, this study used a survey to examine general feelings of belonging and the influencing factors for belonging while presenting individual narratives collected from semi-structured interviews for eight students’ experiences. The data collected in this study revealed that significant differences exist in critical factors of sense of belonging based on race, gender, and LGBTQ+ identity. Additionally, data showed the importance of academic, social, and campus-community belonging …

“My Ob/Gyn Has The Worst Bedside Manner…” A Qualitative Analysis Of Patient-Provider Communication And Mental Health Outcomes Of Women In Rural Georgia, Tobi F. Oloyede

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Despite technological advances in medicine and public health innovations, maternal mortality in the United States remains significantly higher than in other developed countries. Specifically, Georgia ranks as the second worst place to give birth in the country. Maternal mental health conditions are common, manageable complications that can happen at any point during pregnancy, childbirth, or in the first year following delivery, with 1 in 5 women affected. Unfortunately, 75% of women who experience MMH symptoms are left untreated.

This study focuses on patient-provider communication through the birthing experiences of women who have been pregnant in Georgia to examine how their …

College Students And Beliefs In The American Dream: The Impact Of Race, Class, And Gender, Maggie E. Marlow Jan 2023

College Students And Beliefs In The American Dream: The Impact Of Race, Class, And Gender, Maggie E. Marlow

Honors College Theses

The concept of the American Dream and its promises of prosperity and social mobility, primarily through hard work, has been prevalent throughout modern U.S. history. However, what defines the American Dream has been arbitrary and varied, and research has shown that attitudes and beliefs surrounding the Dream have changed over time with shifts in the economic and political environments. The research for this thesis uses qualitative methods, specifically thematic analysis, to analyze 16 in-depth, one-on-one interviews to examine how students attending a predominantly white university in the Southeastern United States perceive the American Dream today while factoring in how those …

Engaged Alienation: Sotl, Inclusivity, And The Problem Of Integrity, Michael K. Potter, Jessica Raffoul Jan 2023

Engaged Alienation: Sotl, Inclusivity, And The Problem Of Integrity, Michael K. Potter, Jessica Raffoul

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) defines itself as an inclusive field of study, and scholars have long lauded its ability to engage academics from each and every discipline. Yet SoTL’s research culture has long been dominated by a narrow conception of social science. As a result, the lived experience of scholars from other disciplines, particularly the humanities, is one of engaged alienation. The borders created by SoTL’s research paradigm are invisible to those within and somewhat impenetrable to those who are othered by virtue of their disciplinary identities. This paper interrogates the contradictions between SoTL’s espoused values and …

Exploring The College Enrollment Of Students From Rural Areas: Considerations For Scholarly Practitioners, Elise J. Cain, Samantha Class

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

Rural students graduate high school at a rate comparable to their urban and suburban peers; however, people from rural areas attend college at the lowest rate. Due to this discrepancy and the ever-growing importance of postsecondary education, this article summarizes and synthesizes works on the college enrollment of students from rural areas. The article begins with background information on the benefits of postsecondary education, definitions of rurality, the educational attainment of rural people, as well as institutional type and attendance patterns of rural students. Next, using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of human development as a guiding framework, literature about the individual, …

“You’Re Kind Of Considered Like A Leper”: A Narrative Inquiry Into How The Significant Academic Struggle Of Academic Probation Impacts Women Undergraduate Science Students’ Sense Of Belonging At An Institution, Matthew J. Smith, Rebekah I. Estevez, Georgianna L. Martin

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

While there has been significant research on both how academic struggles impact college students, as well as factors that impact the sense of belonging for college students, there has been little research examining how a significant academic struggle impacts a students’ perception of sense of belonging at that institution. This qualitative study explores how an academic struggle impacts students’ sense of belonging at that institution, as well as other findings from this study.

“Expanding Our Pedagogical Imagination”: Faculty Experiences With Scholarly Digital Storytelling Across Disciplines, Kelly Schrum Jan 2023

“Expanding Our Pedagogical Imagination”: Faculty Experiences With Scholarly Digital Storytelling Across Disciplines, Kelly Schrum

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Despite growing pressure to increase technology-enhanced assessment, research has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of widespread meaningful integration of technology in higher education. This is in part due to faculty reluctance which is compounded by lack of training and incentives. This qualitative research grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is based on in-depth interviews with 25 faculty internationally, across disciplines and teaching contexts, who integrated scholarly digital storytelling into their pedagogy. It examines their motivations for adopting this technology-enhanced assessment and their experiences implementing it, including increased engagement and student learning. It further explores challenges faced and lessons …

Rethinking “Damage-Centered” Research And Individual Solutions: Cultural Humility As A Framework To Increase Student Diversity In Undergraduate Stem Departments, Anita Chikkatur, Stephanie Valle Jan 2023

Rethinking “Damage-Centered” Research And Individual Solutions: Cultural Humility As A Framework To Increase Student Diversity In Undergraduate Stem Departments, Anita Chikkatur, Stephanie Valle

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study examines data from a participatory research action study on the experiences of underrepresented students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields at a small liberal arts college in the United States. Our analysis aims to move away from the framework that students needed to be taught how to cope with and overcome the challenges they faced in their STEM experiences, including racism and sexism. Instead, we propose a stronger focus on how to end racist, sexist, and other forms of discrimination. We draw on the concept of “cultural humility” as a concrete framework that professors, departments, and …

New Women In The Old Dominion: Race And Gender In Progressive-Era Virginia, Rachel Scott Jan 2023

New Women In The Old Dominion: Race And Gender In Progressive-Era Virginia, Rachel Scott

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis traces the development of Black and white Southern women’s pursuit of political power between the end of the Civil War and the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Emancipation and the downfall of the antebellum planter aristocracy upset traditional Southern gender norms and opened new doors for women of both races in the political upheaval of Reconstruction. Though both Black and white women participated in the women’s club movement and joined women’s advocacy and charity groups following the Civil War, their work was distinctive both from each other and from other regional Progressive movements. The context of …

Sheprep: Examining The Influence Of The Messaging And The Messenger Associated With Prep Uptake Among African American Women, Christian C. Spears Jan 2023

Sheprep: Examining The Influence Of The Messaging And The Messenger Associated With Prep Uptake Among African American Women, Christian C. Spears

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

African American Women (AAW) make up less than 15% of the female population in the United States but account for over 50% of new HIV diagnoses among females. This largely preventable health disparity can be mitigated by advocating and prescribing Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a preventive HIV medication, to persons at risk. Despite advances in medication options, there are less than 13% of Black people who could benefit from having been prescribed PrEP, and limited research and promotion on the effectiveness of PrEP for AAW. The “ShePrEP Study” aimed to assess awareness, perceptions, and receptivity toward PrEP among AAW. This study …
