Exploring The College Enrollment Of Students From Rural Areas: Considerations For Scholarly Practitioners, Elise J. Cain, Samantha Class

Leadership, Technology & Human Development: Faculty Publications

Rural students graduate high school at a rate comparable to their urban and suburban peers; however, people from rural areas attend college at the lowest rate. Due to this discrepancy and the ever-growing importance of postsecondary education, this article summarizes and synthesizes works on the college enrollment of students from rural areas. The article begins with background information on the benefits of postsecondary education, definitions of rurality, the educational attainment of rural people, as well as institutional type and attendance patterns of rural students. Next, using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of human development as a guiding framework, literature about the individual, …

Engaged Alienation: Sotl, Inclusivity, And The Problem Of Integrity, Michael K. Potter, Jessica Raffoul Jan 2023

Engaged Alienation: Sotl, Inclusivity, And The Problem Of Integrity, Michael K. Potter, Jessica Raffoul

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) defines itself as an inclusive field of study, and scholars have long lauded its ability to engage academics from each and every discipline. Yet SoTL’s research culture has long been dominated by a narrow conception of social science. As a result, the lived experience of scholars from other disciplines, particularly the humanities, is one of engaged alienation. The borders created by SoTL’s research paradigm are invisible to those within and somewhat impenetrable to those who are othered by virtue of their disciplinary identities. This paper interrogates the contradictions between SoTL’s espoused values and …

Supporting The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In Hong Kong, Carmel Mcnaught, Cecilia Chun Jan 2023

Supporting The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning In Hong Kong, Carmel Mcnaught, Cecilia Chun

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The paper traces the evolution of the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from early 2002 to the end of 2021. The University needed a centre to support both institutional and local (department and faculty) needs and aspirations for enhancing teaching and learning. Five key strategies adopted by CLEAR are: embedding the practice of existing teachers into policy development, localizing quality-assurance processes, relating professional-development activities to career development, involving students, and producing research evidence from within the Hong Kong context. The evidence base that supports these strategies, and the cultural and …

Can Sotl Generate High Quality Research While Maintaining Its Commitment To Inclusivity?, Jill Mcsweeney, Matthew A. Schnurr Jan 2023

Can Sotl Generate High Quality Research While Maintaining Its Commitment To Inclusivity?, Jill Mcsweeney, Matthew A. Schnurr

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) faces an emerging challenge as it seeks to balance commitments to disciplinary inclusivity and scholarly quality. We undertake a scoping review of 64 articles across three leading SoTL journals to investigate how the literature balances these twin commitments by exploring what questions are being asked, what methods are being used, and how these may be impacting the inferences that are being made within that scholarship. We advocate for a more focused definition of SoTL that can help reinforce its legitimacy within institutional power structures of scholarship, and for partnerships across disciplinary boundaries to …

Teaching Generation Z Students About Politics: Optimism Or Pessimism?, Mark K. Mcbeth, Jonathan W.L. Blakeman, Logan Kearsley, Alyson Tyler, Emma Villanueva

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The scholarship of teaching and learning is primarily concerned with improving student learning. Of course, we want our students to learn our disciplines, we want them to become critical thinkers, and we want them learn to write. But this study looks at how learning impacts a student’s optimism or pessimism. We believe that it is an important topic in today’s world and provides an important new topic in the scholarship of teaching and learning. This study is co-authored by two team-teachers and three honors students. Using an Introduction to Politics course as case material, the study provides a pre and …

A Portrait Of Mwrite As A Research Program: A Review Of Research On Writing-To-Learn In Stem Through The Mwrite Program, Solaire A. Finkenstaedt-Quinn, Field M. Watts, Ginger V. Shultz, Anne Ruggles Gere

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The writing-to-learn (WTL) literature is varied in how assignments are structured and implemented in the classroom, making it difficult for instructors to identify how to incorporate writing effectively. Drawing on the WTL literature, the MWrite program was established to work with STEM faculty to design, implement, and assess evidence- based WTL assignments. Herein we present a review of the WTL research generated through the MWrite program, situating our findings in a four-dimensional framework of engagement to identify how the MWrite WTL assignment design and implementation has supported students’ learning. Our analysis indicates that the multi-faceted design of MWrite WTL assignments …

Rethinking “Damage-Centered” Research And Individual Solutions: Cultural Humility As A Framework To Increase Student Diversity In Undergraduate Stem Departments, Anita Chikkatur, Stephanie Valle Jan 2023

Rethinking “Damage-Centered” Research And Individual Solutions: Cultural Humility As A Framework To Increase Student Diversity In Undergraduate Stem Departments, Anita Chikkatur, Stephanie Valle

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study examines data from a participatory research action study on the experiences of underrepresented students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields at a small liberal arts college in the United States. Our analysis aims to move away from the framework that students needed to be taught how to cope with and overcome the challenges they faced in their STEM experiences, including racism and sexism. Instead, we propose a stronger focus on how to end racist, sexist, and other forms of discrimination. We draw on the concept of “cultural humility” as a concrete framework that professors, departments, and …

Addressing The Gap Of Informal Science Field Experiences In Science Methods Courses, Christina L. Mcdaniel, Colton M. Wilder, Cecile M. Arquette

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Preservice teachers in science education courses do not generally experience informal, authentic science education practices in their fieldwork. This study used the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to frame a study that integrated informal science teaching experiences with a university teacher education science methods course. The results showed improvement in participant preservice teachers' ability to teach science content, their self-confidence in teaching science, and their ability to connect what they learned in their methods course in a real-life setting.

Stop, Collaborate, And Listen: A Faculty Learning Community Developed To Address Gaps In Pre-Service Education About Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Emily Hoeh, Michelle L. Bonati, Suzannah Chatlos, Maureen Squires, Bradley Countermine

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

There is a notable lack of opportunity for students in pre-service professional training programs and faculty in higher education to collaborate and work together, across disciplines within a common area of professional expertise. In this case, a faculty learning community (FLC) was formed to create a set of video-based simulations based on relevant topics for Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings, used to inform the development of an Individualized Education Program. These materials were made available across departments and universities, establishing a common language and set of CSE practices. Additionally, a structured three-level text reading and discussion provided faculty with …

Beyond The "Research Vs. Scholarship" Dichotomy: The Emergence Of A New Category Of Academic Staff, Marion Coderch Jan 2023

Beyond The "Research Vs. Scholarship" Dichotomy: The Emergence Of A New Category Of Academic Staff, Marion Coderch

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This paper deals with the role of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) among staff on teaching-only con-tracts in UK higher education, particularly in contrast with the activities of research-active staff. Drawing on the results of a quantitative study carried out during the summer of 2021 among modern foreign language teachers in 64 UK universities, the questions of the status and purpose of SoTL are addressed. The results of the survey show that, beyond the traditional two-tier division of academic labour based on the research vs. scholarship dichotomy, a third group of academic staff with no research or SoTL …

Non-Indigenous Instructors Teaching About Indigenous Content: Reflections And Recommendations From Indigenous Ways Of Knowing And Pedagogy, Manu Sharma, Peggy Shannon-Baker Jan 2023

Non-Indigenous Instructors Teaching About Indigenous Content: Reflections And Recommendations From Indigenous Ways Of Knowing And Pedagogy, Manu Sharma, Peggy Shannon-Baker

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This article takes a scholarship of teaching and learning approach to improve the authors teaching about Indige-nous content as non-Indigenous teacher educators. It explores how they attempted to incorporate Indigenous content and teaching practices into multicultural education classes and then reflect on how they could have improved their teaching practice. Both authors provide their unique positionality which provides context which is essential to consider when doing equity-based work such as teaching about/with Indigenous communities. The authors discuss their teaching experiences after they occurred with one another and then engage in an exploration via literature on teaching about Indigenous content. The …

Standards-Based Grading In Difficult Times: Precalculus Student Perceptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Epstein Jan 2023

Standards-Based Grading In Difficult Times: Precalculus Student Perceptions During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Epstein

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Standards-based grading is an alternative grading system that gives students multiple opportunities to demon-strate proficiency in course standards or objectives. It has the potential to provide flexibility and reduce student anxiety, which are particularly important during difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, stu-dents in a Precalculus course using standards-based grading between Spring 2021 and Spring 2022 were surveyed about how the pandemic had affected their learning and the benefits and challenges of standards-based grading. The students who took the course in Spring 2021, whose previous learning was least affected by the pandemic, were most likely to …

Another Look At High-Impact Practices In Teacher Education: Linking Practices With Engagement, Ekaterina Koubek, Raymond J. Rodriguez Jan 2023

Another Look At High-Impact Practices In Teacher Education: Linking Practices With Engagement, Ekaterina Koubek, Raymond J. Rodriguez

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

High-Impact Practices (HIPs), as adopted by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), are teaching and learning practices in higher education that promote student engagement and learning as measured on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). This study replicated a previous study conducted by the authors exploring the extent to which prior findings on the relationship between HIPs and student engagement could be confirmed with a different sample of students and faculty in a teacher preparation program. The current study further sought to understand the extent to which faculty members’ design of activities related to HIPs engaged students …

Using Historical Thinking Strategies For Improving Elementary Students’ Content Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Social Studies, Lydia Burnett, Joshua Cuevas Dr. Jan 2023

Using Historical Thinking Strategies For Improving Elementary Students’ Content Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Social Studies, Lydia Burnett, Joshua Cuevas Dr.

Georgia Educational Researcher

Instructional time spent on elementary social studies is often marginalized due to the emphasis placed on other content areas. Therefore, social studies teachers must employ meaningful instructional strategies that will engage students while promoting content acquisition. This quasi-experimental study responds to this challenge by guiding a sample of 44 fifth grade students to use the historical thinking skills of sourcing, contextualizing, and corroborating that encourage engagement with a variety of primary sources through the lens of Jerome Bruner’s learning theories. The control group used traditional instructional methods including close-note taking, vocabulary review, and independent reading from social studies texts. Both …

Equitable Treatment Of Students With Dyslexia, Aubrey Cooper Jan 2023

Equitable Treatment Of Students With Dyslexia, Aubrey Cooper

Georgia Educational Researcher

In recent years, dyslexia legislation and awareness has become more prevalent. Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that affects a student’s ability to read because they have deficits in their overall phonological awareness skills. While federal and state legislation has been passed regarding dyslexia, awareness surrounding dyslexia is still very minimal. Educators, parents, and other school faculty members many times do not have a strong knowledge of dyslexia. Thus, students with dyslexia may not receive an education that is as equitable as their peers. This article discusses the federal and state legislation surrounding dyslexia, knowledge surrounding dyslexia, and the effects …

Divergent Representations Of Africa: A Qualitative Analysis Of Georgia Social Studies Textbooks, Bailey A. Brown, Amber R. Reed Jan 2023

Divergent Representations Of Africa: A Qualitative Analysis Of Georgia Social Studies Textbooks, Bailey A. Brown, Amber R. Reed

Georgia Educational Researcher

The Georgia Department of Education has clearly defined standards for learning about Africa in the seventh grade. However, there exists great variation in how textbooks present this material and address these standards. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, we assess the presentation of Africa in three widely used Georgia social studies textbooks. We document and analyze coverage of Africa across Georgia’s seventh grade world studies learning domains. Our research demonstrates: 1) that, despite widespread calls for decolonization of education and strengthening of multicultural education, Euro-American perspectives on Africa are still prevalent; 2) textbooks vary widely on how they choose to …

The Elementary Assistant Principal: Exploring Mentorship As A Development Pathway For The Principal Job Role, Adib Shakir, Chinasa Elue, Sheryl J. Croft, Nicholas Clegorne

Georgia Educational Researcher

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenographical article was to explore the different ways that elementary assistant principals experienced mentoring from their elementary principals as a way to provide the requisite leadership development that would lead them to become a principal. This research study was conducted using in-depth semi-structured interviews as the primary data source. Ancillary data sources such as demographic surveys, reviewing district leadership secondary source documents, and researcher journal notes aided in the data triangulation and analysis. This study was guided by one main research question: What are the different ways elementary assistant principals experience mentoring from their elementary …

Using Voting As A Lens To Teach Central Tendency And Impact K-8 Future Teachers, Ha Nguyen, Heidi Eisenreich

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

This study discusses how teaching K-8 preservice teachers (PSTs) about the measures of central tendency through the context of the voting process impacted their learning about mathematics as well as the voting process and issues that may arise. Being a well-informed citizen, especially for people who will be teaching in the next few years, is important as they will influence many children in the future. Findings show changes in the PSTs' perspectives on the voting process, voting issues, and learning center measures. Additionally, PSTs indicated they enjoyed learning about the measures of central tendency through context of the voting process …

The ‘Homework Gap’ And Academic Achievement In High School Science: An Ecological Perspective For Policymakers And Practitioners, Tianca Crocker, David Kleitsch

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are increasingly required within K-12 educational settings, yet the impact of youth’s access to and use of digital resources outside of the classroom on academic achievement is only beginning to be explored in the literature. This study used data from the Fragile Families & Child Wellbeing Study to assess the relationship between grades in high school science and digital equity across the learner’s ecological environment. Digital inequities experienced by school-aged youth are referred to as the homework gap. The COVID-19 pandemic placed new urgency on resolving the homework gap as millions of students shifted to …

A “Post” Pandemic(S) Village Check-In: Pulse Checks And Recommendations For A Hard Re-Set In Education, Jarvais J. Jackson, Alesia Mickle Moldavan, Anne Valauri Jan 2023

A “Post” Pandemic(S) Village Check-In: Pulse Checks And Recommendations For A Hard Re-Set In Education, Jarvais J. Jackson, Alesia Mickle Moldavan, Anne Valauri

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Utilizing the lens of the “pandemic as portal” (Roy, 2020; Souto-Manning, 2021) and the need for a “hard re-set” (Ladson-Billings, 2021) of our current education system, this literature synthesis engages with head, health, and home to consider what a new normal could look like as we take a “village check-in” of each area. For head, we consider the systemic barriers to equitable academic achievement that have long been in place for Black and Brown students. When considering health, we look at the impact of the pandemic on teacher well-being and how this may impact their ability to teach effectively and …
